Six years ago I read an article here in Germany in the magazine "Stern". It was an Interview with an english economist who had a position at a university. It was taken two weeks (or maybe one week) prior to the referendum. I wish I had memorized his name because I often remember his last statement. Throughout the whole article he was convinced that the british people would vote against Brexit and explained, as an expert, all the reasons why. In the end the reporter asked him: "But what if the people vote for Brexit - what do you think, what will it cost your country?" And his answer was: "It will cost my country at least 30 years. 10 years trying to establish new trading regulations with the EU and the world , 10 years trying to "survive" in a global economy with all the other trading blogs as a small "single country" and 10 years of begging the EU to let us in again." So the first 10 years for GB are almost over. 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️

This is another one of James O'Briens "Alright, come here a minute" moments. Make a compilation* of those LBC. As an American, I've forgotten what that feels like... That's sad, isn't it. Yeah, I can identify that is a sad thing. Edit: I found James O'Brien because I wanted an opinion outside of America about America. Especially as a veteran who lived outside of America and was able to look back on my country from a distance. You really are some kind of melt aren't you? "Stay in Europe", "Freedom of Movement" - what? - can't you make your own coffee or do you need some Eastern European to pour it for you? Fact is, whilst you would love to continue mass immigration (to make your coffee!), please accept: There are over 96,000 households living in Temporary accommodation (March 2022) Over 121,680 children are living this way also (this is also in March 2022) 37,164 new homes were built (April 21 to March 2022) - of these, 5,606 were classified as 'affordable', and only 3,077 were for social rent. So, please tell me - with the amount of households in Temporary accommodation, the number of children also, the number of households built - where are you putting the extra 300,000 plus that was immigration? Shall I include portacabins in schools to make additional classrooms to accommodate this?, the over 7% total population increase which has strained the NHS to the limit? (my son is a nurse!), the lack of infrastructure to cope? Make your own coffee!

I'm from the US, which means I'm pretty ignorant about what goes on in the rest of the world, but I thought there was a link between Brexit in the UK and the election of Trump in the US. A big part of Trump's election had to do with middle and working class Whites in America feeling as if they were being displaced by People of Color. Trump inherited all of the anger, fear, angst over this perceived displacement and it swept him into office. I thought part of Brexit was fear/anger/angst over immigration making the UK less White, and resentment toward the EU which was perceived as this liberal/woke/bureaucracy that was forcing Britons to pay for the dilution of their own culture. How far off am I with this?
@rogerphelps9939
@rogerphelps9939 Год назад
That was the perception, but the truth was rather different. Most immigration has nothing to do with the EU. If people complain about culture dilution, they should understand that immigration from the EU was not the main cause of any "culture dilution."
@just_some_guy_on_the_internet
I think the phenomena are linked in the sense that they exposed a disillusionment with public institutions that didn't seem to care about them, and a modern society in which the rules had somehow changed and that somehow excluded or disadvantaged them. And it's natural to look for simple explanations, and anything that is perceived as a remote "other" (immigrants, the EU, the federal institutions, people with different lifestyles and/or political or religious ideas) is an easy scapegoat. And not just in the US and UK, either. PiS in Poland, Fidesz in Hungary, Bolsonaro in Brazil, Erdogan in Turkey, possibly Modi in India as well (though I'm on shakier ground there, please don't roast me too much in the replies); this phenomenon doesn't seem limited or linked to any single phenomenon or cause that explains them all, but seems to be a general malaise across democratic countries. It's almost as if democracy itself - at least in the current global context - has reached some point in its life beyond where societies are starting to lose faith in it and give up on it. It's almost as if a perverse kind of self-destructiveness has seized the body politic, that corrodes the very institutions that act as a check and balance against concentration of power in a single individual, that encourages the co-option, corruption or neutralisation of all other institutions. Proud republics - some long-standing - lurching seemingly by accident back towards a modern form of absolute monarchy, in which the forms of former systems of government may persist, but little else. And maybe not just democracies. Something curious seems to be happening to China as well, where the leader has rather more power over the party than any of his predecessors since Mao (not to mention an unprecdented third term). Maybe it is cyclical, a function of a lost collective memory of how hard-fought democracy was to begin with and its value over the alternatives - and harks back to Santayana's old yarn that those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it. We do appear to be speedrunning the entire 20-year period between 1918 and 1938 at the moment, after all. I don't recall the "liberal/woke" notion ever really being attached to the EU, though. AFAIK the concept of "woke culture" started in the USA, and didn't really enter the British lexicon until some time after the Brexit vote had happened. (We had "political correctness" - usually with the suffix "gone mad" - but that generally wasn't ascribed to the EU either, but to domestic politics. Usually local councils, for some reason.) And the EU doesn't really sit anywhere that's easily identifiable on the political spectrum, as its output tends to be whatever bland consensus invariably emerges from a bunch of different European Governments that are all over the political compass and constantly change every time a European country changes Government in a General Election. Which probably makes the EU a bit of a Centrist Dad, which also infuriates ideologues (and explain why tankies claim it's all a big capitalist plot, and libertarians and neoliberal ultras claim it's all a bit socialist plot).

The UK did not leave the single market. The British people voted to bring back the decision making powers to Westminster which were handed over to Brussels by our government without public consultation. At no point did the British Government or the people ever ask to leave the trading block. That decision was made by the EU. Of course the UK did most of its trade with Europe, because that is what we signed up to for 30 years. The British people did not sign up to handing over its sovereign power to a bunch of unelected EU dictators. The future will be different because the U.K. are increasing its trade with the largest growth areas in the world. The EU has no projected growth. The UK will pick up yield going forward and the EU will continue to stagnate. The UK was a net importer of goods from the EU. This demonstrates that the EU has damaged all of the member state's economic prospects by applying restrictions on trading with the UK

In 2014 Scotland had an Independence Vote, but the vote narrowly failed! The major reason the vote failed was the story fed from the British Parliament that Scotland would have to leave the EU, AND have to stop using the Pound, as well as suffer from a loss of State pension rights !!!!!!!! Of course the Brexit Referendum was held in 2016 AND the point was made that Britain (and the NHS) would benefit from leaving (more lies) Scotland clearly voted to remain in the EU, but was'dragged out kicking and angry at the Tory duplicity carried out. The very next day after the result was declared, my nephew received an Email from the EU Student Finance Group that his grant to study in Germany had been revoked! A sensible move for Europe, but an immediate response to Brexit - another 'success' for the UK Brexit action !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure, we'll move on when you actually do something to try and fix this incredible disaster you've helped to pile on top of us. For starters, how about _taking_ _accountability_ for your decision and not deflecting, pretending this is someone else's fault.

Those who were 'duped' CHOSE to be duped. Chose to put their own prejudices and ignorance before what was best for the cohntry and the future generations. The slightest bit of common sense, intelligence and research would have told those 'duped' idiots that Brexit was a huge mistake. They chose to believe obvious lies from the right wing. They deserve to have their faces rubbed in their own idiocy just like the rest of us with a brain who knew it wouldn't work have had to have years of BS from them. EU would still welcome Britain back. The only thing that needs to happen is a solid political movement (or leader) to reverse the damage. Taking no action creates a vacuum for people like Farage to continue his divisive campaign to alienate as many people as possible in this country. Bigger the economic crisis, the more people will be blamed. Yesterday it was about Eastern Europeans like me. Today it is about hard working Albanians. Tomorrow it will be you.
