Bellingham has to drop deeper. He only plays that advanced role at Madrid because the play without a striker, Kane couldn't get involved because EVERYONE apart from Saka was trying to occupy the same space and kept getting in each other's way

O Hara should prove he's ready to host a taksport show and call out the players who really didn't perform. TAA was nowhere near our worst performer last night

As soon as TAA came off we lost control of the game completely. Anyone that would rather see Gallagher over TAA can never complain about Southgate being in charge.

I find this Trent pile on bizarre yet predictable. He was fine. It was England's left side that didn't work. Foden can't play there. Again we're trying to play all our star players at the cost of attacking balance. Anthony Gordon should be playing on the left, and Joe Gomez would be better than Tripper, who's form went off a cliff last season.

Trent did more than what Kane did the whole game but never gets any criticism.

We wouldn't have scored the goal without Trent's interception that started the move. Why not play Bellingham in first half, then sub in Foden for 2nd half, so use BOTH in central position. Same with Trent, play him for one half and then switch him with Wharton when opposition are tiring.

Southgate himself knows that he can't play midfield. He just wanted an excuse to have 5 defenders on the pitch.

Trent was quite good in midfield. His interception almost led to a goal, but Walker couldn't finish. Trent made a clear shot on target. Trent did misplace a difficult pass near his own box, but he wasn't entirely responsible for that. It was a horrible pass to him. But today's performance shows that Trent can do the job.

I thought Foden was anonymous. The only creativity we saw at all was Trent.

Trent AA is there for his passing ability but when no one is offering more than a five yard pass he will be wasted. When he picks up the ball Saka, Foden and Kane should be making forward runs. More often than not they were right in front of him. Without the movement then TAA won't be of any use in midfield as you're taking away his main weapon. Too slow and plodding throughout the whole team. Even Jude faded and started to play backwards and sideways the England way.

What’s crazy about that game is the same players dropped off after 30 mins and Southgate DID see it but chose not to inject life in the midfield and persisted on Trent who was giving the ball away

The reason trent didnt stand out is because he has a snail upfront who doesnt make runs trent turns on the ball his first thought at liverpool is to spot the runner so he can play over the top or round a corner how can he do that if kane doesnt move if gorden was on the left and Watkins was up front yesterday we would of won more and I bet trent would of had a lot better of a game probably would of had an assist

He’s too pedestrian in midfield, he’s good at coming onto the ball from RB where he can spray a pass but it’s totally different to being in the thick of it, Foden needs to play in the centre and Gordon out wide, otherwise Foden is just a passenger stuck out left with no decent full back overlapping

The media and fans banged on so much about wanting TAA to play in midfield, Southgate goes and gives you that wish and because it didn't work out(I thought he had a decent game), now you are banging on about how it didn't work out. It's the Gerrard Lampard Scholes debate again, but this time it's Bellingham Foden Saka. Foden is a 10 but not as good as Bellingham. He is good on the right but not as good as Saka. Trying to play all your best players doesn't work, it unbalances the team. Foden should be used to give the other two a rest during the tournament. Gordon or Eze should be down the left because they're better than Foden down the left.

Matt makes a very good point, Southgate should accept someone to help him in clutch moments or when the game is going negative on the team. Even if it's a text message from someone like Pep or Klopp or Harry R.

The big difference in the game happened when they came out in the second half and Kane was dropping much deeper and even was out on the left at times. The job Kane did in the first half was amazing and underrated as he stayed high and pinned the Serbian defence back up high which allowed England to have more of the ball. As soon as he started coming deep again it invited all the pressure on England. We need Gordon to come on the left for Foden or up top for Kane in the last 30 at least cause he is much busier out of possession and would have won the ball or forced the mistake higher up the pitch to capitalise on.

Firstly cant hit foden wide because Foden was rarely out wide, Secondly Trippier rarely got wide and the one time he did Trent found him and lastly couldnt hit Kane because Kane isn't going to stretch the defence. I doubt if any of the pundits who are comparing Jude With Zidane & De Stefano ever witnessed the great Stefano in action (apart from RU-vid clips). There was a couple of times where I thought the ref had blew the whistle and stopped play when we were on the ball, he hadn’t it was just our players walking round after 20 mins, embarrassing performance

England have spent so many years debating how to get the best out of Gerrard and Lampard (and Scholes), when the reality is, players needed to be dropped to the bench to get the best out of the team. And here we are in 2024, and its the same now with Foden and Trent.

It was so obvious Serbia were going to make changes in the 2nd half to bring the game to us and Southgate had nothing in response, zero.

Yes his 1 on 1 defending can isn't a strong point but he has some other good defending skills like his ability to read the game makes him one of the best interceptors in PL look at his stats. In the Serbia game he made the joint-most interceptions of any player He actually set up one of England’s best counter-attacking situations with his reading of the game. Picking up Walker and then setting up Bellingham. He also finished with a 100% tackle success rate. He also attempted the highest number of shots and only Bellingham and Bukayo Saka attempted more dribbles. It was a pretty good performance but people remember one mis control, hunters looking for any mistake

Four issues for me: 1. No proper left back. I love trippier but come on! 2. Foden on left. He’s better in middle. If Bellingham occupies that spot then drop Foden and play a proper left winger. Currently balance is all off. 3. Trent in midfield. Not totally convinced. Would Gallagher not be a better shout? 4. Kane so isolated 😮

Completely disagree about having to play Bellingham no. 10 he’s more box to box. Play him a bit behind with license to go forward then try Foden CAM

I agree Trent isn't ready for that position and Rice had to do a lot of work on his own and he stopped a lot of attacks.

When the pressure's on, people revert to type, we become instinctual and all those hours of training in your NATURAL POSITION are wasted. Get Gomez in at left back, play three in the middle (a familiar formation that's key to retaining possession) Wharton in as the number 6 (an actual midfield playmaker who retains possession?), Bellingham as the box to box number 10, Rice as a ball winning number 8 (these dynamics and roles are required and work!). Last but not least, either Gordon or Eze on the left, this is of course dependent upon who's better at making those attacking runs past Harry Kane, which let's face it, are needed due to Kane's inclination to link from deeper and his lack of pace. Kinda poses the question as to why Trent shoehorned in as a midfielder, when there was no attacking threat for the ball in behind to the left?

4-1-4-1 is the obvious solution, but Southgate is too big a puss. It keeps Foden & Bellingham right behind Kane and removed the double pivot you don’t have… Removing Foden would be unbelievably stupid

Trent was almost holding hands with Rice most of the game, always stood right next to him. Was pointless him being on the pitch. Bowen Gordon or Palmer on the left and let Foden and Bellingham run the middle. Foden needs to step up from that performance though, think he'd play better against the bigger teams that want to play and leave more space

Amazing vision and range, but wasted if there’s no one running in behind. He’s never had to think about pressure coming from all angles, so he looks like a fish out of water in CM. It’s the players freezing, not Southgate’s tactics, that make the players stop being proactive after 30 mins

That Serbia team will physically challenge anyone. Average height of 6.2. Foden suffered for the same reason Rashford has all season no left footer at left back. When you play a left footer there the threat of the overlap pulls a defender that way allowing Foden to cut inside. My biggest worry isn’t Foden it’s Trent he worries me in midfield. If shaw is fit we are a different team as we threaten down both sides.

I can’t believe everybody’s slating, Harry Kane, he made that ball stick in the latter stages of that game and won fouls to buy much needed time. None of the other strikers would have been able to do that. Also, if not for a wonderful save he would have been on the scoresheet Just my opinion.

Trent has this move he does every so often, I can recall at least 2 examples in that game where he is facing our goal in the midfield and just hits the ball at 90 degrees across the pitch without looking and it just went out of play or was intercepted because no one was there to receive it. That really annoyed me because it was at a stage of the game where we needed to keep possession to maintain our flow and himself and one or two others were far too frantic in that part of the game. Also Foden's habit of just hitting the ball ahead of himself just so he can deliberately run into the opponent... he's gonna get hurt doing that soon and it won't even get a foul for his troubles. When Gallagher came on I was very impressed, but it felt like all the subs had been told to just hold up the play instead try to break forward for a 2nd goal. Bowen didn't move an inch, he just stood on the touchline and when he did get the ball, back to Walker and Gallagher the ball came. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we won, but we should be winning games by far more than 1 goal, especially when we have the chance to take it.
