All you 71 and 72 year olds, lol. Im turning 75 this year...those were wild times, man. "Talkin bout my generation..." And musicians got to be real musicians...and singers were raw....
Great reaction.. I'm 72 years old and it thrills my soul to see you young people keeping and sharing Janis' legend alive. RIP to the one and only talent that was Janis. Peace and love y'all.
You gotta do Ball and Chain live from Monterrey Pop festival next. Ive known her name my whole life but just started discovering Janis Joplin music the last few years and I'm hard pressed to come up with a more impressive singer from any era. This performance was brand new for me and as usual it was goddam amazing. When it comes to live performances she has no equal. She was truly awesome. I heard Steven Tyler of Aerosmith say that he was a big Janis Joplin fan and felt that she was the best singer of all time and it was a big part for him breaking into music. I've gotta agree with him. She is fricken fucken tremendous.
It was so different back then. You guys watch music videos and can critique on performance, sound ect. We used to dissolve into the music. You closed your eyes lying on your back and just experienced it. Most of our artists didn’t have “ acts” they just grabbed the mic and sang, and their feelings came out with the music, straight into us.
1960's, grade school, transistor radio with the single earpiece, just letting the music melt directly into your brain and becoming a part of your very nervous system. I swear it changed my DNA so completely that I now truly believe I could no more survive without music than without food and water.
"Summertime" was written by George Gershwin in 1925 at a cottage on Folly Beach in Charleston SC. He and his brother rented the cottage to get away from the world and wrote "Porgy and Bess".
Pretty amazing that 2 Jewish sons of immigrants from NYC managed to capture the soul of the Gullah (low-country Black) culture in this and other songs from Porgy and Bess. For the original-original of this song, see if you can find an opera or Broadway performance. It's been covered by dozens of singers and bands in almost any genre of music.
It's one of the most covered song ever, I remember a tv-show from 20 years ago looking for the most covered song and this was one of the two that stood out by something 623 versions on vinyl. Still Janis one is this well known and rightly so.
"Summertime and the livin' is easy. Fish are jumpin, and the cotton is high. Oh, your daddy's rich and your momma's good lookin'. So hush little baby. Don't you cry...." From the show Porgy and Bess. Who thinks that *anyone* ever comforted this tortured woman when *she* was just little? >.< R.I.P Janis.
"Me and Bobby McGee" was easily her most famous song. You've gotta react to that. She was so new for her time because she was different. She was a trendsetter. She was so amazing!
The composer of “ Me & my Bobby McGee,” Kris Kristopherson thought she sang it better than he did. They had a brief affair (I just read her biography, “Janis.”). I Was just shy of 16 when she died; she’s the first person I had genuinely mourned.
@@TheDivayenta I was 60 miles away and 5 years old when that concert happened. That doesn't really count, now does it. Close... but no cigar! But I've traveled back a couple of times via serotonin 5-ht receptor agonists... (hint hint nudge nudge know what I mean? know what I mean?)
I can't lie...this made me cry. My Mom had this song played at her funeral (believe it or not...she was a pretty cool woman) Me and Bobbie Mcgee is a GREAT song! But also, I don't think anybody ever has, or ever will, react to Mercedes Benz...but that is my all time favorite Janis song. Mainly because everytime I hear it, I see my Mom dancing around the kitchen while she was cooking. God I miss her. 😢 Edited to add...I found reactions to Mercedes Benz 🎉
Aww your comment made me cry. My mom used to dance in the kitchen while cooking too, I remember her dancing and singing along with Bob Segar Keep playin that rock n roll. Here's to all moms who loved to dance!
Us baby boomers had the best music to listen to. The 60's & 70's growing up was amazing, cant compare it to how the world is now. There will never be a generation like it. Thank you for sharing your new love for our generation of great tunes.
Mama Janis is one of the true goats! And can I just ad how great Swedish and Danish TV was back in the 60ies and 70ies; They caught alot of the big stars back then with superb picture and sound quality for us to still enjoy decades later.
Maybe and Little Girl Blue are MUSTS!! You also should react to the video where Janis got her first introduction performing this song Ball and Chain in 1967.
I’m so glad that you “get it”! Janis was a tortured soul and she poured every ounce of it into her music, whether it was an original or a cover! She was simply brilliant! Such a loss to us all like others in the 27 club… Ball and Chain live should be next! Enjoy the ride! Peace and love!
When you said she can't control her soul it reminded me of the video of her singing Get It While You Can. I might be the only one who can see her soul spilling out to the audience and then you can see it crash back into her. It's just a split second, but I can see her feel the impact. It gives me chills every time.
I'm 71 yrs old and after all these years I still get chills listening to Janis Joplin sing. So much incredible music was created during the 60s. If you haven't heard Jimi Hendrix be sure to check him out !
Eta James, Aretha, Minnie Ripperton, Kate Bush are all stunning vocalists, and yet Janis moves me more than all of them, there's just a infectious capture of soul communicated marvellously.
I'm 69 yrs young because Janis kept me that way. Loved her since the first, I was 14. RIP, dear sweet Janis, you left us too soon. Very nice react, much respect and appreciation of her uniqueness. She had what I believe is called a Polyphonic voice. I call her Sweet soul Sister. RIP❤
"Ball and Chain", "Piece of my Heart", and "Me and Bobby McGee" are all must listens' for Janis Joplin fans. Then just for fun, listen to her "Mercedes Benz" song.
Janice is a rock and roll oddity. Tiny in stature, beautiful face.,, and then the voice hits you and you know you have just heard something so different and so raw....Rest in Paradise, Janice, you are missed !!!! My favorite song from Janice is Mercedes Benz, worth a listen!!! Etta James, now that's another wonderfully talented and soulful singer.....
I saw her at the Hollywood Bowl in '69. Just unbelievable!! That raspiness in her voice sounded almost like 2 separate voices coming out of her mouth at the same time.
"Summertime" was also a hit for Ella Fitzgerald in 1964 and she also performed a duet with Louis Armstrong. Janis felt that the original song was too slow and did not capture the essence of the lyrics. She decided to add a more upbeat, rock-oriented sound to the song,
There will never be another Janis, she sang with her soul, her whole body was an instrument, and in the end a member of the 27 club, Rest In Paradise Janis.
I watched this performance at Woodstock, Bethel NY . That is the Cosmic Blues Band backing her up. I'm nearly 80 and Woodstock is still the best 4 days of my life. The icing on the cake was watching Jimmy Hendrix close out Woodstock with the last song performed The National Anthem...
"Summertime" was written by George Gershwin for his opera "Porgy and Bess," which was first performed in 1935. "Porgy and Bess" tells the story of an African American family in the southern United States, and "Summertime" is one of the most well-known arias from this opera. The lyrics for the song were written by American poet DuBose Heyward. Composing this aria was a unique moment in Gershwin's career, as he incorporated many elements of jazz and African American music into the opera, which was unusual for him. Covers of "Summertime" have been recorded by many famous musicians, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Django Reinhardt, and many others, but the most stunning, in my opinion, was Janis Joplin's rendition of this song.
She died before I was born, but Janis Joplin is hands down ⬇ my favorite female vocalist ever. Oh, and I freaking love Etta James, too! I'm gonna find your reaction to I'd Rather Go Blind. ❤❤❤❤
I was 14 years old when this was recorded. All these years and I still get chills listening to Janis. Plus, 'Summertime' is one of my faves....done by a number of amazing vocalists.
Her song Me & Bobby McGee was on her last album ( Pearl ) that she was recording at the time of her death. She just recorded it and pasted away a few hours later. She never knew how big of a hit it would have been. RIP Janis.
Summertime is the perfect song it's so hard to sing badly try it. This performance is just incredible any of her lives will blow you away she poured herself into the music.
My all-time favourite Janis tune - no-one ever has, or ever will, sing this classic like she did. Brilliant stuff, and great reaction as always, peace and love from Canada ☮
Check out Ball & Chain live from the Monterey Pop Festival, widely considered her greatest live performance. Also, from the Big Brother and the Holding Company album Cheap Thrills, (the band she first hit it big with and by far my favorite of hers) check out Combination of the Two, Turtle Blues (one of her few compositions) and Piece of My Heart. You’ll be glad you did.
The first time I heard Janis, she was with Big Brother and the Holding Company, and I immediately knew she was special... When she blasted "Me and Bobby McGee..." she really shined
Other people probably mentioned this already: Summertime is a song from the musical Porgy and Bess, after which it became a jazz standard. Lots of people have covered it, but Janis' is my favorite.
Finally someone who has a reaction to the best ever performance of Janis Joplin singing Summertime. I've listened to every singer on yt who has sung this song including the album version of this song. In my estimation this is the best version EVER. Thank You!
So lovely to hear this amazing artist again. We were spoilt in the 60's blessed with musicians who learned their craft in clubs and bars, singing live.
Janis is in a bubble with her band when she sings and it's as though there is no one else anywhere around -- just her and them. I love Janis and her soul! Definitely stay on the train and ride it into the rabbit hole of Janis Joplin! Great reaction!!
That is a voice full of soul, torment, smoke, Southern Comfort, and sadly, H. With beauty and balls. Pearl. Read any bio of her, and it's such a story.
Janis is legendary, loved by all! RIP Queen Janis! That was "the Perfect Quote for her, describing " she cannot contain the soul in her soul". Priceless
Check out Janis Joplin Work Me Lord Live in Stockholm 1969. One of her best performances, and what's amazing is that it's the last song of a long set. She still absolutely kills it!! Good luck!
Sets ur soul aflight everytime. Stunning vocals. Bean bag chair, headphones, candles, ky bourbon and this on vinyl for best flight. R.I.P. Thanx so much, Peace
63 years old now and no other female artist affected me like Janis Joplin did, I absolutely love her song cry baby & everything else she did. Her voice was like no other.
For all the soul, all the grit and reality in her voice, there is a sweetness in her softer notes that draws me in . Ive listened to her for over 50 years, never gets old
I was born in 1969. The music I was born into was Awesome! So may years ago and such great music. Thanl you very much. My favorite was the ome my mom would sing all the time. Mercades Bens by Janis Joplin. She was so talented.. Thank you agaim for a great reaction. PS. Me and Bobby Mcgee is another good one. ❤
Growing up, one song that I heard a lot was, Mercedes Benze. It is sung a cappella. It was played on the radio quite a bit. And was written by Janice Joplin at a poetry slam. There are other credits for the song as well. I don't remember whom.
Saw her twice back in the 70's. My emotions all over the place: she was Desire, she was Nature, Mother, goddess and Child. She was also Pain so deep it scared me.. .
If you haven't react to ball and chain live at the Monterey Pop Festival 1967 it was one of her first big performances and before her first album was released
