I think he misspoke a little bit. I think what theanimeman meant, was the tone and grammar used in anime is very different from actual japanese. Which is common sense, nobody speaks with the high pitched disney voices in North america either. But i believe that you can learn some VERY basic japenese words and phrases from anime, although very informal and filled with slang. But not really useless.

Interestingly, the hair of anime characters became more "asian looking" over time. In the 1980s, anime characters often had big, bushy hair similar to US/European hairstyles of that time. Nowadays, anime hair is straight, sharp and hugging the head's surface, much like real-life asian hair.

yep, the same thing happens with people that watch movies and think it will be like that in the US. Or in spanish countries the novelas (soap operas) lol, they exagerate themes present in each culture.
I've been to Japan, didn't expect anything really in the anime direction and I mostly went to visit a lot of historical sites. There are loooots of cool castles and old temple complexes in amazing condition and if it's on the country side there are some pretty nice places to go hiking, often right next to aforementioned sites. All the people we met were quite nice and when we only just looked like we were lost (like looking at a map to decide where to go next), there was always someone coming over asking us if we needed help finding some place (in mostly accented english, but still understandable). Communication was no problem most of the time with some slow english, some gesticulation and some japanese phrases from a travel dictionary. Also convenience stores, public transportation and food were all great. 10/10 vacation, would go again. But sadly flights are quite expensive from where I live.
That’s honestly why I went to Japan in the first place was the experience the traditional culture and history by seeing all the castles and shrines. I’m more into the history and culture of Japan rather than anime or J-pop, I think I might be the minority when it comes to that aspect.

Personally it all started for me with shoguns, samurais and ninjas, so Japanese history, by that I mean the Sengoku Jidai period and times around Meiji Restoration. Hearing "Anime Japanese is useless" hurt, not because I thought people didn't say "kisama" but because I already knew they didn't talk like that and thought you were referring to the normal sentences said in Anime. Then again, the US doesn't talk like the cartoons either, even in normal dialog.

The school system portrayed in anime is technically correct, but the way teachers and students act towards each other, and the concept of the "one beautiful smart" girl that every guy desires or vice versa is super exaggerated. From what I've heard schools there aren't that different from anywhere else, just some minor differences.

I am an anime fan but I never wanted to visit Japan. My plan was to get a job somewhere in America. But a few months ago I started watching videos from Abroad in Japan and now I want to move to Japan instead because I've fallen in love with it's culture thanks to chris.
Thank you for expressing this. Everyone always says, “I want to go to Japan to see anime”. I tell them that it is NOT the same and that they will be disappointed. I am completely fine with Anime, but the people are oblivious of this fact. I also hate that they only want to learn Japanese because of Anime. I swear it is so annoying when I ask someone “Why do you want to go to Japan/learn the language?” I swear that 90% of the people would say, “Because of anime, duh.” It’s annoying..

On kissanime they have the dub of sailor moon. Though not like the real English one when her name is Serena instead of Usagi. I grew up with Serena not Usagi. But yeah, Kissanime has dub and sub. Check it out.
Y’know, I’ve have a love for South-east Asia culture for a LONG time and when I got into anime I think that’s what sealed the deal for me cause I started looking into japan and it’s culture and just fell in love with it
I've never been under the impression that anime is an accurate representation of Japan. All it did was make me interested in the Japanese culture in addition to my interest in American and European cultures.
also, I guess it makes sense that Japanese people would be more into a foreign concept than the things they themselves make since that technically is like anime fans as a whole.
And on an extra side note, I actually like Theresia the most in Re:zero. Not much was shown about her but I still like her more than most of the other characters.

Honestly I want to go Japan mainly for the food, scenery and to experience a different culture! I love Asia in general, I’ve already done some travelling in Thailand and Japan is next on my list... I plan on visiting Sendai because it looks beautiful!

Sloan The Female Otaku Well I think some actually do. But from my experience in Japan is that people who was born before the 2000's use those type of phones. Because, those phones are designed for "businessmen" (thank you au.kiddi) so while they're working, they can just reply quickly if there's a message. I've gotta admit though, it's hard to use clamshell phones.
No and yes. My little sister gets japanese fashion magazines for teens (called Seventeen if you're interested) and in the back it usually has articles that were made with the opinions and surveys of japanese highschool girls. The majority have smart phones (iphone or samsung) but some own and use both and only a few have flip (most likely because of family/financial issues. Just like how not everyone in the us owns a smartphone)
Nonetheless, I often get the feeling that Anime is some kind of "escape hatch" or some way for grown people to catch up with their youth dreams. That is why characters in Anime often are unruly, break social conventions and are youthful, even when it makes no sense at all (at least I don't think 15 years old teenagers who go to school and at night fight to the death with robots and magic make a lot of sense). And with brutal school schedules like in Japan and a population in which many people over 25 never had have experienced any kind of love relationship, that kind of makes sense. I think many Japanese feel somehow cheated of their youth. That's also why the high school setting is so omnipresent and the harem genre actually exists. I could be way off here, but truth to be told, it would explain a lot about the Anime world.
When I visited Japan back in 2009, I didn't expect it to be exactly like in anime. Maybe some similarities, like the food presented and the look of buildings and structures, but that was it. I was never a full weeb and assumed anime is %100 accurate. I even brought an English-Japanese dictionary with me on my trip rather than try to memorize what I heard from anime - mostly because my friend pointed out that a lot of anime is mistranslated. I did ask about things I wasn't too familiar with or things that I recognized from anime, but never assumed what I saw in anime was accurate. Even so, I still loved Japan. My expectations were that it would be a fantastic country, and I was right on that. I would visit it again in a heart beat. Live there?... Maybe. The one thing that did take me by surprise, which I learned later on, was about the otaku culture in Japan. I didn't try to mingle with otaku during my visit, since I was focused on my own enjoyment and I can't speak a lick of Japanese. The only Japanese person I had a friendly conversation with was a clerk at a music shop in Osaka because he was curious about Canada, which is where I'm from, and he spoke English to me. But to hear how otaku culture is not only viewed but also 'practiced', after I got back from Japan, I was taken by surprise. Aside from that..... no reaction. I was happy and amazed at the country. It's culture, how things are run, the people, etc. all fascinated me before, during and after my trip. I knew Japan is nothing like anime, and it didn't stop me from wanting to go visit and fall in love with the country. Of course, I still have a lot to learn about Japan.

Theres a city called Tachikawa in japan, where the "toaru" anime series are based upon, and the city basically dedicate itself to that anime, btw Toaru series is one of the best anime ever imo

I've been to Japan twice now and, as you've said, is NOTHING like anime. No one's groping you in any type of public transportation, no one is loud af, no one is being molested in an alley, no one is picking you up or flirting with you when your the hottest guy around, etc... Basically, Anime does not equal to real life.
Yea idk if you're being sarcastic or not but my wife (from Tokyo) has been in some really horrid situations during rush hour on the train in tokyo. I'm talking groping, some guy trying to pull her away by her hand, and the worst (when the train wasn't packed) a dude walked to my wife and dropped his pants and whipped his dick out. To me (being American) the worst part of all was that in each of these situations not one person stepped in to help her. But that's just how japanese culture is. People don't want to get involved with something that isn't there problem. All that said... I'll be accompanying my wife to Japan on the 24th of this month for my first time and I can't fucking wait!
After I went to Japan I can only say one thing: I need to go back because I saw mostly shrines and temples and tourist attractions and I would love to see the common and casual life people experience every day. But one thing I do appreciate in Japan is that the air is so clean. I came back to America and was literally choking once I left the airport because of cigarette smoke in the air. Somehow with no public trash cans, there was less litter where I got to visit and It's a beautiful place. If anybody reads this comment... 3 years after the video was made... I strongly recommend you go to Japan not just for Akihabara (but I think you should save a day for it because there was so much to take in) But go visit places that are small towns and try to interact with people. At a temple after I got separated from my group a man tried to talk to me but I couldn't understand or even explain where I was supposed to be, so I also say you should invest in basic lessons to b eable to get a rough point across.

I went to Japan before my downward spiral into anime, and I loved it. I watched some of the more popular ones in my countries, like Doraemon or Conan as a kid, and did not had the mind set of a weebaboo when I went there. Every now and then today, I would find an anime that would make me want to compare the different between it and the irl
