I don't really see what the point of arguing over this is. Japan has it's great games (mostly triple a) and the west has theirs (mostly indie.) Plus at the end of the day what mainly matters is if a game is fun or not.

Beauty is subjective. So when someone comes and tells you that a certain person or character is the epitome of beauty, and that all other interpretations of beauty are bad. They're basically telling you what to think; all while stroking their ego, believing their opinion to be higher than anyone else's. It's okay to dislike anime characters. It's like they just can't end a character's story and move on to something new, instead they have to rewrite batman another thousand times because the last 5 million weren't enough. All I ever see are "hero" comics being sold, I can't think of one comic that's come from the big boys that wasn't just someone i've already seen just "reimagined". The difference between American comics and Japanese manga is that American comics will try to fit as many tropes into one story as possible instead of having multiple stories revolve around a single one. Japan has shonen, shojo, isekai, and many others, and each is filled with thousands of different artist's visions and interpretations. 'Reincarnated as a slime' and 'redo of a healer' are both fall under the fantasy trope and yet have almost nothing in common besides that because both creators wanted to tell their own story. American comics will keep using the same established characters from the last 80 years because then they don't have to come up with something new, and that's why manga and indie comics have been absolutely destroying them in sales and will continue to do so until something changes.

Why did this even come up ? The west make really good games that are inspiring, artistic, and leave you completely satisfied for 6-8 hours, and have lasting emotional resonance, and they also pump call of duty out like candy.. The Japanese make things you relate to, and connect with on emotional levels, ways to escape your everyday life into worlds of fantasy. And I'd imagine they have there own manufacturing line of garbage to.. Im not saying thats all these groups have of good and bad, nor am I saying one has x and the other has x.. All I'm saying is that all culture has there good and bad, sharp and dull.. Why is it a contest ? Why shit on others creations ? We're all in this together, do we not wish to just be entertained ?

Has this child not played or watched playthroughs of Shadow of the Colossus? Or the original Final Fantasy VII? Or any of Japan's many story driven games? I used to be one of those guys that say that anime female characters are just walking fanservices, but after playing Genshin Impact, everything changes. These waifus do have characters, they also look great as well compared to what nowadays western developers brought to the table.

The first rule of art is, that its subjective. Propagating something isn't art only shows, that the person don't know what art is. The generalization of eastern vs western in itself doesnt make sense too. Who would compare a Final Fantasy or the sorts to a hentai game (both are art btw). I wouldnt compare Battlefield with Skyrim either. Both categories are so wide ranged it doesnt make sense to derive them to a single word like "eastern" and "western". Ok let's pretend we aren't openminded and assume there is a typical "eastern" and a typicall "western" stereotype. Then the evidence i have is: storytelling wise the best pieces i've played are almost all from the eastern side. Usually full of friendship, trust and betrayal, suffering and overcoming these. I am biased here since the usual structure of storytelling of "eastern games" appeal to me more. However i dont have to dig hard to find masterpieces in storytelling on this side. And that was only storytelling wise. Artwork-wise it is the same. Illustrations can be really great on the western side: emotional and artistic-/craftmanship-wise splendid. Apart from illustrations however nothing really graps my intention. Gameplay-wise: Almost all publisher do a polished version of their last successful game. Thats the same on both sides. Change my mind! So screw that nonesense.

Their heart is in the right place, but the soulless fanservice-packed skinner boxes are not exclusive to Japanese or Western devs. Though Japan does have a much larger emphasis in their culture of making almost all of their female characters high-school aged moe blobs, and packing games with dozens of them, each having one or two personality traits and nothing else. Like seriously, I think some Japanese devs spend more time trying to decide their bust/waist/hip measurements, bloodtype, and favorite food than actually writing a good character. It's like any female character in anime or video games like Senran Kagura or Dead or Alive is just an opportunity to market overpriced statues that nerds will wanna hotglue. Western devs do this too, but they seem to have a lot more respect for their characters on average. Not every character has to be appealing to horny nerds that fantasize about children (who happen to be 200 years old).

Genshin Impact is a Chinese game but I think it applies to the “fan service” this person was talking about. Um… the art is beautiful, the animation great, characters pretty, gameplay pretty cool and story pretty interesting. All and all it’s a good game and that’s all I care about. If this so called “fan service” gives me a good game, I’ll take it over a western woke ass game. They aren’t as appealing because the character designs suck and the animation isn’t as pretty from what I’ve seen. And video games are designed to let you escape from the real world so why can’t I play a sexy anime lady?

The Japanese game designers and producers make some great and beautiful games, and I have to appreciate them as someone who inspires to also make games, as trying to make sure that your game is an amazing and unique game compared to others in the same industry must be quite a stressful time.

The cyberpunk comment isn't really true though. Cyberpunk didn't sell well because the game is broken and unfinished. It literally got taken off of the Playstation store, and I'm guessing Sony is a big deal in Japan. Sex sells is a valid point in the money side of the gaming industry though.

I've been playing Persona 5 Royal, first Persona game I've ever played, and I am full on obsessed with it. Such an impressively stylish game. I don't think I've every played a game that is dripping with so much personality.

Nier Automata had depth in ts story and music. It was art while being appealing, something that should be learnt from not denied.

You can have one of two things in games, good looking characters, or woke political stuff. I'd rather take the good looking characters, politics are only cool when it's fake, like the government in FFXIII.
