Ghost of Tsushima, developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 4, is an action-adventure game with an open world design. The main character is Jin Sakai, one of the last samurai on the island of Tsushima during the first Mongol invasion of Japan in the 1270s. The game has a stealth component and the player is free to explore the game world as he likes. To travel fast to the distant areas of the world the player can ride a horse. The world will be filled with NPCs for the player to interact with. The player can use stealth and distractions to avoid confrontation with enemies or he can fight them straight aways with his katana and other weapons. Even dueling with NPCs will be possible. The game is set in the late 13th century on Tsushima Island and offers a wide range of landscapes for the player to visit during his adventure.
The main character is this samurai by the name of Jin Sakai and his companion is a female samurai that goes by the name of Masako. The main villain is the mongol general Khotun Khan.
The game will be released in July 2020.

I did some digging, the reason they picked the time period was because the mongol invasion highly out numbered the Japanese and wanted to tell a story of hopelessness and a need to change everything he was tought to win against a enemy who will never stop coming

cool, so why did they have to get all the armour and weaponry wrong? Know its splitting hairs as far as video games go, but why not. Random people not into japanese history won't think it looks any less cinematic or cool to use correct weapons and armour, weld a naginata before the sword. But nope, game developers have to knock off all those overused samurai tropes.

I like the fact they aimed for authenticity but didn't stick 100% to historical accuracy. Reminds me of the series Vikings whereby a lot of the events & features are historically correct but the timeline has been compressed in such a way that several centuries happen over the course of what feels like a year. We get the best bits, what's not to like.

They probably chose the Mongol invasion because they wanted an environment of insurgency, an independent fighter against an occupying force, justifying the ninja strategies, but they clearly made this because they just love Kurosawa films.

Sucker Punch actually wanted to make it more accurate and utilize real historical figures similar to Assassin's Creed. However they went and spoke with a few experts in Japan about doing that and were advised that it would be disrespectful to the memory of those figures who are no longer alive. So they opted to make it fictional while still set within the real life event.

This is my opinion but I feel the reason they went with a more Edo aesthetic style is because it's more recognizable to a mainstream audience. One who is not well versed in Feudal Japanese history and culture. I believe they wanted to make it more easily accessible to those who want a more realistic historical drama but also may not be looking for a game to "teach them history" . The Edo period has been used in multiple examples of Samurai cinema from Kurosaki to The Last Samurai and also 47 Ronin. So I think the reason they went for that aesthetic despite the game taking place generations before that is because of its recognizability.
@doryfishie2
@doryfishie2 3 года назад
So why not set it in the Edo period for maximum recognizability?
@mulder19x95
@mulder19x95 3 года назад
@@doryfishie2 Because nothing super special really happened during the Edo Period in terms of warfare. The Edo Period was a more peaceful. The Mongol invasion was a brutal and bloody campaign and the perfect setting for the game. All they did was change the look of the Samurai armor to make it recognizable to an audience not well versed in Feudal Japanese History. It's not really a MAJOR change.
@rottensquid
@rottensquid 3 года назад
@@doryfishie2 I don't know history that well, but I'm guessing there wasn't anything like the Mongol invasion during the Edo period, and the game needed that premise for the game play. They wanted an open world game with enemy encounters every three or four minutes. And they wanted the player mostly alone to face them. Plus, the overwhelming superiority of the Mongol forces enhanced the absolute necessity for Jin to abandon the "samurai code" in order to defeat them. So that particular historical event also lent to the story, and the main character's personal dilemma. And it had to be the first invasion, because that emphasized the fact that the samurai were wholly unprepared to deal with it, heightening the drama, stacking the odds against Jin. This leaves us with the question why Suckerpunch didn't just abandon the Edo elements altogether. But the whole original intent of the game was to create a playable Kurosawa movie. They didn't want to abandon that idea, and why should they? As @Cursedfortune points out, that's the most recognizable period. It's a crowdpleaser. And it's what the developers wanted to do. So instead of making up a fictional invasion during the Edo period, or abandoning the dream of making a Kurosawa game purely for the sake of historical accuracy, they chose instead to just simply mush history a bit. It's the compromise that makes the most sense.

They did mention that they were going after how old samurai films were choreographed and the cinematic style they were done with, that's why it looks and feels like that. I can't really say much about why katana daisho as opposed to tachi but that might be just a design choice as a more relatable weapon set for modern players. It might also relate to the next subject..."That's not how samurai fight. No, that is EXACTLY how samurai fight." As far as I can remember, Ghost of Tsushima is supposed to tell the tale of Jin (the main character) who experiences the horror of the Mongol Invasion of Tsushima, with his (and the local folks') beliefs about how noble warriors like samurai "honorably" fight put into the spotlight of the moral question...Do they fight the "honorable" way they are culturally used to believing? Or will they do everything they can, even becoming the "Ghost of Tsushima" who relies on devious tricks and backstabbing as an unseen enemy, just to survive the invasion? That's the main focus of the whole theme from what I can remember, and I recall them mentioning very early on that Jin's story will lead to what will become the birth of the "true" samurai (a.k.a. the samurai of the more latter periods (which many of us now identify when we say "samurai") succeeding the Kamakura samurai). It might be possible that the choice of weapons Jin uses are more latter-period samurai based because of him adapting his way of thinking versus the Mongols. As for the armors the Mongols use, I can't really say without playing the actual game. They did however mention that Jin's choice of armors or clothing will have "mechanical" advantages. This statement is somewhat different when you consider they specifically used that term as opposed to "different stats". Perhaps this means bulkier armor means less agility and acrobatic capability but more protection from arrows? I can't really say.

Amazing review Metatron. I've always been irked by the romanticed version of samurai, they were, as you said, killing machines with only the orders of their lord in mind, nothing else mattered to them. If their lord demanded a village raided and burned to the ground there was no question of honor because the only honor to a samurai was obeying his lord. Peace changed them but not to the point that is most often represented in media.

The same thing has happened to knights. Knights would be brutal as hell back in the day. But sometime in the victorian period they changed the meaning of chivalry from how to treat noble hostages captured in battle for ransom to a code of honour for righteous knights on how to treat women.

@@fattiger6957 To be fair, courtly ideals and honor were part of chivalry...in some locations and time periods, according to some contemporary people. Okay so things that were considered great and noble during their existence was later changed by generations after who had either more evolved, more sophisticated, or just more delicate sensibilities. Who cares? I dont think it's fair to argue they are somehow bad or illegitimate or even less noble simply based upon what a softer or, to be diplomatic, more advanced civilization finds acceptable. If it wasnt for them, the next generation wouldnt have been able to edit anything, only their enemies. I'll take the romanticized version over the overly harsh version any day. Of course the generations after would portray their ancestors in a positive light, something modern people have forgotten. Which makes us bigger pieces of shit then they were.

As someone who loves iaido, I really look forward to this game. I personally hope this becomes a series of standalone games set in different periods of Japan. Of course they would need to rename the game like Ghost of Meiji or Ghost of Edo since other games probably wouldn't be set in Tsushima, unless the sequel takes place during the second invasion. Fun fact: The developers of this game did work alongside an iaido school called "Tenshinryu Hyoho" that was founded by Tokizawa Yahei during the Edo period.
@juancarlosparrasanchez4913
@juancarlosparrasanchez4913 4 года назад
It seems to me that the reason they picked that particular period is so that they make the player face a situation where he's completely outnumbered to make him make a choice between the 2 types of combat approach. At the same time, mongols are an invading force, they do not share your language and seem to be portrayed as a force of evil, akin to some type of bandit or barbarian. They probably wanted to avoid the moral dilemmas of being a samurai or shinobi facing off against other Japanese factions with all the political and moral grayness that entrails.

To be fair the protagonists in the game are constantly moving around and are involved in lots of foot combat, so a uchigatana-style koshirae may be more suitable for them. Katana style mounts were used as early as at least early Kamakura periods, just not that much among full-sized long swords and war swords until the 15th century or so
@draco84oz
@draco84oz 4 года назад
I would think that the use of a Tachi would be an important point - If I remember my history correctly, it was the Mongol invasions, and the weakness of the Japanese swords against the Mongol armour that forced swordsmiths to rethink how they forged their weapons, and eventually lead to the evolution of the Katana.

@Thelondonbadger Actually, no, samurai did not use one-handed shields (these were only used before the time of the samurai). Barricade shields were used only for infantry. Which were more like small sliding walls. And Yari was not popular at the time more used since Sengoku Jidai this is Kamakura Jidai, so he would use Naginata as a spear. But you are right that the sword is the last choice. Only if he fell off his horse or Naginata broke would he fight with the sword.

My take on your question at the end; I think this event was chosen specifically to question the identity, or rather the principles of a samurai in the face of a situation where standard protocol and "honor" won't cut it anymore. As you explained, a samurai's primary role is to serve and accomplish his duty. The method is secondary as long as he meets odd's ends. That's where the shinobi aspect comes from. From that clip of dialogue, I would guess that your conquest strayed too far from what is socially accepted, and your allies will begin to doubt you.

And also because the Island of Tsushima was the only part of Japan the Mongols truly "conquered" (albeit briefly) AND because Tsushima itself can actually be recreated 1:1 in a game, something game developers can't really do to any of Japan's major islands with current technology and drive space.
@felixhaggblom7562
@felixhaggblom7562 4 года назад
@@KnightofAges The island setting makes sense, but I also think the setting was chosed because Mongons provide an "other" that can play as an antagonist that is different from the Japanese. @TanukiDigital

Thanks for the insights. About the choice of period: I think it was more about a choice of place for an open world game. The island is very small (about 70km length) in comparison to Japan's main islands. So it's far easier to represent Tsushima "fully" in contrast to an open world game in Japan where you'd have to focus on a region (as Kingdom Come did). Hitting invisible or visible walls in an open world game feels bad and cuts off some of the immersion, while the sea surrounding Tshushima is a natural border. Maybe the edo period style was chosen for what we westerners without background in history perceive as typical Samurai from popular movies and Mangas/Animes, often playing in that time (e.g. several Kurosawa movies, Okami, Samurai Fiction, Shogun series etc.).

The style, the combat, the atmosphere... all looks fantastic - a feeling I'm looking for a while now What I don't like about this game play trailer and so the game itself: As you mentioned if the devs put so much effort to depict the samurai armor - why are then the mongols look like armed peasants - while you would think when you set up a war camp while invading a foreign country you would have at least the patrols and guards wearing armor all the time. Also what is that piece of metal the mongols use? Those are NOT sabers any mounted warrior would use - and mongols were mainly horsemen - those are just far too short so they look more like early 18th century cutlasses for me. For comparison: the cavalry saber used by Hungarians in the 9th century had a blade lenght of 75 cm or even a bit longer - and that is exactly the blade lenght I would use in combat - rather than that scimitar like something with a blade lenght of seemingly 60 cm The symbols in the mongol war camp - those are like a variant of a Triskelion - but the Triskelion is a European symbol. Did the mongols used a symbol like that? Also the bow the protagonist is using... What kind of bow is that? Most certainly not a yumi, also not a recurve - did they even use in Japan bows like that? All and all I think you are completely right about that the setup for this game should be about 160 years later - where a samurai loyal to the newly established bakufu would go after ronins who turned bandits after Sekigahara So I wonder what the actual plot of the game will be...

Well my lord, as the old saying goes "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story." I would say that the developers were more looking to tell a dramatic fictional story centered around the Kamakura Mongol invasion rather than trying to do a historical reenactment. Kind of like how Hollywood portrays King Arthur (if he actually did exist) in medieval castles and shinning plate armor when he is supposedly from the Dark ages well before that time. That's probably what this game is aiming more to be, a romanticized version of old Kamakura period Japan.

I feel like the period its "set in" at this point is just to have a different setting than is usual or expected in "Samurai" settings. Typically the other two you mention are referenced or subconsciously chosen it seems because of the amount of it in popular media. Perhaps this is a subtle yet not all encompassing way of letting the developer differentiate its game in a small yet large enough way to make it stand out from the others should any of its other details fail at that.

I love souls but I agree. Souls was born from a developer who wanted to do his own thing. The vast majority of souls like games don't really emulate the games well (I think salt and sanctuary had a decent understanding of how to make it work though).

As a multilingual, I affirm this video to be pretty accurate. Kinda refreshing, to be honest. The slices were one of the most flashy/extravagant moves, but expected from a game that makes you feel like a badass. PS. The Kenjyutsu portrayed in the game is a mix of 古武術 and 長拳系剣術(footwork and body twist). NOT pure Japanese based.

You guys looking for historical authenticity needs to let go. No offense. This game is clearly going for the History Channel Vikings level of "historical authenticity." I am well versed in East Asia history. The Edo period Kendo and Ashikaga/Sengoku period armor design stuff here are very annoying, but I have endured History Channel Vikings, so this is nothing new and not nearly as bad as Vikings. Also. No body mentioned the elephant in the room. Kamakura period Samurai fought primarily as archers mounted or not. The fact that both Mongols and Samurais use very little ranged weaponry and had zero mounted combat according to trailer is the real immersion breaker for me...
@klikssiikubra314
@klikssiikubra314 4 года назад
@@pypy1986820 I mean to be fair much of the fighting in the Mongol invasion was indeed infantry to infantry. Cavalry action is difficult with a sea based invasion and fighting among forts, which is why many accounts describe close quarter sword and polearm fighting(though there were a few cavalry charges here and there, it seems). A lot of the fighting took place on the ships themselves too, where of course sword combat was most important. Archery was important too, but mostly in firing down from forts to pin down and harass, not as a decisive action which had to be achieved with sword and polearm.

@@klikssiikubra314 Nah. I think you are giving them too much credits. It's probably the typical Hollywood "creative freedom." Again. The History Channel Vikings kind. Let's say what you said is true that it's hard to make mounted warfare works because of engine or map. What stop them from make Mongols and samurais shooting bows then? That's what they were known for at this point. It's not like gritty bow shooting action games are not engaging. Remember the Tomb Raider reboot? Also. Did you take a look at how insultingly lack of care the design of Mongol cannon fodders in this game. Most of them are wearing rags like they were some kind of Oriental pirate goons or something. Mongols wore heavily padded clothing like Russians and other North East Asians because of the climate they are from. They should look like Medieval version of Soviet Soldiers if the devs decided to do the right kind of creative freedom or educated guesses. On the other hand, how about make them looking like Medieval Chinese soldiers. The Mongols who invaded Japan were Yuan China Kublai Mongols. They were heavily simulated at this point. But, again. Nah. let's do none of that and just make a game maximizing appeals for generic Weeaboos where 12th century Samurais fights like 19th century Shinsengumi ronins and Mongols look like some piraty thugs wielding Cutlass looking Chinese Daos because that must be trendy
@klikssiikubra314
@klikssiikubra314 4 года назад
@@pypy1986820 Shooting arrows like Tomb Raider isn't historically accurate either. It'd have been massed volleys from behind earthworks and walls, which while it has an audience(probably the same people who play civil war simulators) isn't exactly the most stimulating. Besides, the protagonist character has a bow, clearly they can use the Tomb Raider style if they feel like it. They're reserving the Mongol armor for boss characters, it would seem.

There's still dozens of stories from the Sengoku period that haven't been told yet. Like how the Miyoshi clan that controlled central Japan was torn down from the inside by one of their most trusted retainers, Matsunaga Hisahide, famously known as the Villain of the Sengoku Jidai. Or how the friendship of minor daimyo Sagara Yoshihi and Kai Soun was torn apart by the Shimazu invasion in Kyushu. Or the story of how the Murakami samurai pirates controlled the inland sea and influenced every major naval battle there from itsukushima to Kizugawaguchi to even the invasions of Shikoku and Kyushu.
