ngl, when the lady invited him to a tea party, showed him pictures of other foreigners that she somehow wrangled to attend her tea party and offered him soy cream biscuits, I had flashbacks to reading "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl and dread started to creep up on me. Glad he's fine but if i were him i would've drop the food into a fire. edit: a comment down below says she's probably part of a Korean cult using foreigner's pictures to promote their cult as a "international religion" to draw in other Koreans. @@andythompson2009 I feel like the term "gaijin" in Japanese is kinda similar to the word "Black" in English. The guy on the video said gaijin to Chris indeed but he of course had no intension of discriminating a friendly foreigner! It just wasn't the best choice of the word.

This is an awesome series idea, me and my boyfriend are enjoying it so much. We are long-time cyclists, both road-biking and touring and just wanted to give you a couple tips that might help (sorry for being absolute jobsworths but were British so you know how it is): - make sure you are consuming lots of carb-based food and snacks during the day (every hour!) as this is what you really need for long-distance cycling, consume protein towards the end of your day for recovery. - don't worry about puncturing your tire, the most important part is having the tire pumped up well. It would make your journey easier if you got slick tires, you would be surprised how much difference this can make. - probably the most important thing, make sure your helmet isn't loose, you should be able to turn your head upside down with it on (with no strap) and it shouldn't fall off your head. These are just a couple things we noticed that would greatly improve your safety and comfort but we love your attitude and your videos, they are amazing and we can't wait to see more! We are planning on cycling from Fukuoka - Sapporo from April to June 2019 so thank you for inspiring us! - Lucy and Dan (UK)

@patwest1815
@patwest1815 4 года назад
@Van That's fitness 101. A simple explanation is exercise is good for the heart and dieting is good for the waste line. I personally found that intense exercise increased my appetite. It was a constant battle but exercise had many side benefits. I agree with you eat healthier and exercise that's more important than dieting alone.

A few years back we went from Brussels to Northern Spain by bike, 1700 km, around 100 km a day. The best, most relaxing holiday ever. I’ve been watching your videos the past few days. We are planning to go to Japan within the next couple of years (avoiding an Olympic year, so probably 2022). I am thinking of fitting in a biking holiday, for example between Kobe and Hiroshima (about a week). I have already starting looking up bike rental shops. I never would have thought of it without having watched your channel but am now getting pretty excited about it. What an inspiration you are!

You want to keep drinking that coffee and also tea in the evening to stay awake. What you need to stay away form is alcohol. Coffee contains loads of antioxidants that will help your muscles repair themselves and will keep you from being so sore after riding all day so eat and drink as many foods as you can that contain antioxidants. Drinking alcohol will only make you feel that much more fatigued and sore the next day. Yeah, I know you're British and asking you to stop drinking alcohol is like asking most people to stop drinking water, but trust me, you don't want anything that will make you dehydrated right now.

I'm really enjoying this series so far. The only complaint I have is that you show two 'this will happen' scenes, one at the begining and one at the end of the video. It gets a bit overkill to have the one in the beginning of the video (when you already had it in a previous episode) when you watch it daily. But that is really my only complaint.
@Vulcapyro
@Vulcapyro 5 лет назад
This might change in later videos at some point. If I were to guess, right now it's mostly for people that have just started tuning in that may not be regular viewers, because these are a lot harder to hook. Usually he just has one so people watch the whole video, but you want the end one to get the ball rolling for future videos.

Chris - I don't know if you'll see this, but ever since a friend suggested it, I've actually had some success drinking a lot of water *in combination with* a little less coffee if I need to stay awake - could just be placebo, but staying hydrated seems to help keep me mentally sharper for longer than just drinking copious amounts of coffee would. Efficiency aside, well done for doing your journey on your mountain bike - you're making it that much more of a challenge, but it'll be that much more of a success if you are stuck with the bike for the duration, so keep at it and good luck!

I believe you stated yesterday that you meet up with your team at three different points each day? Perhaps at each checkpoint, you can hand over footage for them to render while you cycle on to the next point? I'm not saying have them edit your videos together; the videos just wouldn't be the same if someone else did them. At least if it's already rendered you wouldn't have to stay up as late. Also, I have almost no RU-vid video editing experience so you might be able to ignore me. Anyway, the fact that you got even one person to say 'Journey Across Japan' should be considered a success. Keep up the good work and I hope you enjoy your day off.

Also, please for the love of god don’t drink Emerald Mountain often! Although it is cheap and sweet, it’s so gross in the long term. I recommend Georgia Black, no sugar and it totally helps get the job done! God is it bitter though... but the bottles are often bigger at the konbini, so maybe 1 Georgia Black is cheaper than 2 Emerald Mountains. GOOD LUCK! Students at Kansai Gaidai are cheering for you!

For the bike/tire choice, it's more complicated then people are saying. As many are likely from the US and not from a country that actually uses bikes a lot. So as being Dutch myself, I can probably tell things with experience as I do bike for long distances (or used to at least, got a bit lazy in last few years to be honest) Normal bikes are probably not the best choice as they usually come without gears that you will need while climbing a hill, but having a narrower tire may result in less drag between tire and the road. It would be just good enough for daily usage, but not so much for long journey's or offroading. There are however regular bikes that are specially outfitted to serve as long distance bikes. These bikes look like the regular bikes but have mostly a lot more frames for bags etc on both the front and back. They are nice to have but because of the large bulky look it will catch a lot of wind and thus drag. Mountainbike's are excellent for offroad, okay for in towns, but for long distances it may proof more work as it has more contact between tires and the road, which as I mentioned earlier causes more drag and there for you need to work harder. Big advantages of a bike like this is that the tires are tougher as they won't puncture as fast, but also the frame is a lot tougher and could handle a lot of punishment. You do need to work harder and it will cause more fatigue, but the big advantage is that you can actually handle bad roads and debris that may otherwise cause punctures or even damage the wheel rims. A lot of backpackers and long distance travelers prefer this type of bike because it is a lot better then other options. Many people think it's tires will slow you down too much, but this is just so minor that you can ignore that, the tires may even be a lot better with going up hill and down hill then any other bike out there as it was created to do that job in the first place. Racing bike's are excellent for high speeds and specially if there are not too many corners. Due to the very narrow tires it has the advantage of having the least possible contact between tires and the road leading to less resistance. However that does come at a price of the tires getting punctures a lot faster and the wheels itself being more prone to damage. Another big thing is the weaker frame which doesn't allow you to carry a lot of weight. My opinion: The bike you have is actually a lot better then people wish to think, just because of it's big tires it doesn't mean it is a bad choice. Actually it is very wise to choose a mountainbike for a lot of reasons, including those that are required for your trip trough Japan. To my knowledge the roads in Japan are very good and are maintained to a high standard as well. So it doesn't matter what bike you choose, it will do the job just fine. Only thing you need to worry more about is whether you take a lot with you or not. You are only traveling with a small backpack for some basic needs like food and something to drink (and a rain suit), everything else is being transported by car which lightens your load and gives you less drag. Your best option to my personal experience there for (and logical deduction) would be the mountain bike. The model you have there doesn't perhaps have front and rear suspension like my own bike, but it will do the job just fine. Don't worry about the tires, as i mentioned this should be just perfect for your journey.
