My grandfather fought at Khalkhin Gol in that company. He didn't talk about any psychopaths who threw themselves with grenades under tanks. They only behaved like that towards the end of the war (in the Pacific and in Manchuria), when they were desperate and felt their inevitable defeat. Grandfather said that in Mongolia they were so soundly defeated that they were afraid to come to Hitler's aid in 1943-1944.

@@williampoole1742 I don't know anything about the ratio of losses and I won't make anything up. Knowing the incompetence of the Soviet command, I wouldn't be surprised by the superior losses of the anti-Japanese forces. I only mentioned the tactics of the Japanese in those battles I've heard about from relatives. My grandfather was a machine gunner and he had his own count. He dealt with Japanese infantry, but as far as I understood, they had enough armor and artillery. At least my grandfather was severely wounded by shell fragments, some of which were inoperable. But they absorbed the defeat, if you've read historical documents, you've come across information about Japan's condition for attacking the USSR - a sufficient number of Siberian divisions had to be moved westward. Somehow doesn't seem like the people who wouldn't hesitate to throw themselves with a grenade under a tank.

That's a very strange movie to say the least. It feels like it's making fun of both the USSR and the Japanese. The Imperial Japanese Army didn't rely on suicide tactics back in 1939 (Battle of Khalkin Gol) and they certainly didn't use infantry squares either. If you look at contemporary photos, they fought like any modern army would at that time. The Soviet Army in the Far East was commanded by genereal Georgy Zhukov who used combined arms tactics to crush the Japanese Army with a two pincers encirclement movement. They encircled the japanese 23rd Infantry Division and since it refused to surrender, destroyed it. The soviet attack was characterised by considerable use of close air support aviation, artillery bombardments and infantry and tanks closely fighting together. The large majority of soviet tank losses were listed as having been due to antitank guns, a significant amount being caused by conventional artillery and only a minority being due to hand thrown incendiary bombs, grenades or mines. The movie rather show a very fantasy version of that battle unfortunately and it breaks immersion for me.

@@user-kf9dx9cv9c As far as I know, Vassilevsky was already part of the General Staff in 1939. If he had any role in the battle, it would be about planning and coordination, not direct field command. Zhukov was ordered to lead the newly formed 1st Soviet Mongolian Army Group and was given operational independence from Shtern who commanded the Far Eastern Front and under the direct autority of the Stavka. From what I know of the battle, Zhukov was given significant local autority.

And no, at this stage of WW2 the soviets did not have combined arms tactics nailed down and thousands of tanks to throw away (especially on the far east) and Japanese troops did not suicide charge...yet (even if they were 2nd rate troops).

Interesting historical point about the army that the Soviets sent east into Asia. Stalin was amassing this force pretty early on, considering the fighting in their own territory and all of Eastern Europe. Huge amounts of men and equipment which really could of been used in the European theatre were packed up on trains and sent over to the far-east Siberian/Pacific territories. A lot of these guys were veterans of the blitzkrieg type fighting that the Red Army had learned fighting the Germans. The Soviet attack in to Manchuria and Korea was unleashed late in the war and by that point they'd assembled roughly 6,000 fighter/bomber planes, 5,000 tanks with a decent proportion of them being T-34s, and about 1.3 million soldiers. They didn't bring loads of artillery because the point of this was speed and surprise but they did have some mobile heavy guns for dealing with fortified positions. The whole attack is one of the least talked about campaigns of WW2, but it was one of the most successful. The huge Russian veteran strike force, which amazingly had been kept a secret from the Japanese up until this point, was sent in two big pincer attacks that encircled an area of land the size of France. Even more crazy is that this was happening in 1945 and it was actually happening at the same time that the U.S. was dropping the Uranium and Plutonium bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So that's where this is in the timeline. The Japanese did have a sizable force defending the area, about 1.5 million soldiers, but they were spread out and they didn't have much in the way of armoured units. Defensive lines and defence-in-depth tactics didn't work because of the huge size of the area and the terrain was very open and arid which was perfect for armoured divisions and tank strike forces, and because that requires time to set up and the Soviets caught them totally off guard. The only terrain trouble the Soviets came across was that the area also had a lot of cliffs and ridges. There are amazing photos you can find showing the Red Army using a system of winches tied to other tanks where they can dangle a tank down a cliff to slowly one-by-one move entire armoured divisions down mountainsides. Anyway, the Japanese actually surrendered not long after the attack started because this is when the nukes were being used. So a lot of media only talks about the Americans bombing Japanese cities as being the reason for the surrender, but another factor would have been that the Red Army was rapidly taking all of the Japanese territory on the north Asian mainland and there was seemingly nothing that could have stopped them, and that would have left Japan in the position of having the Red Army sitting right across the narrow stretch of sea that separates the mainland from the Japanese home islands. The war in Europe was winding up and the Nazis having lost, so the Russians were only going to be able to send more and more reinforcements into this spot going forward. The Imperial Japanese government might have decided that a surrender now would have placed their post-war government in the hands of the Americans, whereas if they surrendered later they might wind up in the hands of the Soviets. They weren't wrong in a way, I mean that's what happened in North Korea. Anyway, it's an interesting thing I read about once, and there's a few vids on RU-vid that go into it. Thanks for reading my history lesson of a comment.

Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community) Salam (Peace) --

An unfortunate fact dictated by 2 things: 1) The lack of Chinese armor and anti-armor weapons. During the battle of Shanghai the Chinese National Revolutionary Army threw away divisions in frontal attacks against a relative few Japanese tanks. There was no immediate need for better tanks. And 2) the need to ship those tanks from Japan to mainland Asia. There were practical limitations to Japanese tanks in size and weight. The result is their mainstay medium tanks were lighter than their contemporaries and even Soviet light tanks were pentrating them. Given these two strategic realities Japanese capabilities against tanks were never very evolved and Zhukov was able to handily destroy the Japanese at Nomohon with early Soviet tanks. Notably the US faced the same obstacles as Japan did in terms of logistics but the threat of much more capable German armor required the US to develop new and better tanks that could easily be transported and resulted in the M4 Sherman which was perhaps the best tank of the war.

@@tengr6068 Friendly fire is bound to happen during a war. According to Wikipedia, friendly fire accounts for an estimated 2% to 20% of all casualties in battle. Just to give a few incidents during the Iraq war: In the Battle of Nasiriyah, an American force of Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAVs) and infantry under intense enemy fire were misidentified as an Iraqi armored column by two U.S. Air Force A-10s who carried out strafing runs on them. One Marine died as a result. A U.S. Patriot missile shot down a British Panavia Tornado GR.4A of No. 13 Squadron RAF, killing the pilot and navigator. Investigations showed that the Tornado's identification friend or foe indicator had malfunctioned and hence it was not identified as a friendly aircraft.[246][247] An F-14 Tomcat aircrew from VF-32 was involved in the worst friendly fire incident of the war when on 6 April 2003 an F-14 crew was cleared to attack an Iraqi tank near Dibakan, 30 miles (48 km) south east of Mosul. Instead, they mistakenly dropped a single laser-guided bomb on a vehicle convoy consisting of US Special Forces and Kurdish resistance fighters, killing 18 Kurdish fighters, 4 US soldiers and a BBC translator. An additional 80 people were wounded. An investigation following the war found that the pilot had been cleared to drop without the benefit of target coordinates provided by the Forward Air Controller, who was “operating under great stress” at the time. Sgt Steven Roberts, a tank commander of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, was killed when a fellow British soldier manning a tank-mounted machine gun mistakenly hit him while firing at a stone wielding Iraqi protester at a roadblock in Az Zubayr near Basra on 24 March 2003.[248] It was reported that no British soldiers were to be charged for his death.[249]

Don't know how accurate this portrayal is, but the battle of Khalkhin Gol is probably one of the most influential battles of the 20th century. This defeat caused the Japanese to shy away from ever fighting the Soviets again -- which was probably the one and only chance the Axis had of winning WW2. If Japan had thrown everything at the Russians at the same time the Germans were in the West, they might have knocked the Soviet Union out of the war -- and the Allies probably aren't winning the war outright without the Soviets. Instead, Japan looked East and took measures that eventually brought the US into the war.

I mean Japanese had a tactic called anti tank bayonet. The tactic required Japanese soldiers with a bayonet to charge into a Russian tank and stick it into the driver’s sight, which apparently wasn’t protected. Keep in kind that this is during the Battle of Kalkhin Gol. This tactic didn’t really work against American tanks in the pacific theatre, as they were covered with glass.
