In the office along on a Saturday night. Working a hellish project, trying to make it better by listening to Isbell. End up really hearing the lyrics to "The Life you Chose" for the first time. Thinking about a similar situation. Start tearing up. And at that moment, cleaning lady walks into my office to take out the trash. Looking like an unhinged nut case, I just say hello and turn up the song.Thanks, Isbell.

I was lucky enough to be there the 2nd night. This was my first time at the Ryman and easily the best concert of my life. His music, his lyrics and of course Amanda playing fiddle made for a concert I'll remember the rest of my life.
Simply...an amazing performance. People ask how he can give this away for free? Simple...this performance surely won over some new fans. Jason and the 400 Unit delivered. The segment with Songs That She Sang in the Shower and the segue into Cover Me Up was mind blowing. Ethereal.
Was there. Never heard of this guy. I am so thankful I bought tickets for my "better halfs" birthday. It was a total treat and we are fans for life. Amanda was awesome 2. They harmonize so so beautifully
My goodness...musical nirvana. This is as good as music gets. The Mother Church, songs that you feel were written for you, a groove based slammiin' band, all led by a heart felt vocal that could only be delivered by Jason Isbell. You have to have lived to write and sing like that and it's obvious that he has, and paid attention to our human condition while doing it.
I love when Jason just decides, hey, I haven't reminded you guys lately that I'm one of the top ten or fifteen guitar players in the world lately, watch this.
And then he's got Sadler to the side of him tearing it up as well! I love how supremely talented people attract others with equal talent. This band is as good as it gets and nobody writes songs like Jason these days!
So, your point is well-taken, and I'm a HUGE fan of Jason Isbell. He is a man of many great talents. But the truth is there are hundreds if not thousands of guys and gals who play the guitar this well. It's like ice cream, its all good, but each of us prefers our favorite flavor. Jason is certainly one of my favorites. That said, not everyone gets to be--or desires to be--a rock star.
@@towen1977 I love that you just implicitly called Jason a "rock star." Because YES! He may sell "Americana" records and win Grammys in that category, but this is every bit a ROCK AND ROLL act taking up the torch from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
This is quite possibly the best RU-vid concert video I have ever seen. Would have given anything to be there. "Leave your boots by the bed', Jason is at the top of his game.
I was there. The energy in the room was magical. Seen them maybe a dozen times over the years in various venues since that eponymous 400U debut, and this was a special night. I guarantee babies got made after that show.
Heard Jason and the 400 Unit recently in Charlotte and before that in Charlottesville. Simply the best singer/songwriter currently out there. He's setting high bar on poignant lyrics and great live performances.
I saw this tour back in July in Sioux Falls and Cover Me Up brought goosebumps to me that night. Hearing it again here on this video still has the same reaction. I love his music and can't wait to see him over and over again.
There was something in the water in the south from roughly Sept., 1977 until Oct., 1978. Why, you may ask? Sturgill Simpson 8 June, 1978, Jason Isbell 1 Feb., 1979, Derek Trucks 8 June, 1979. Somehow we got really, really blessed. That was a damn fine year!
The sound is AMAZING! Perfect setting at the Church of Music since we've been blessed with the talent of Jason Isbell /Amanda Shires and his band. Is it possible for a band to sound so much better even in person like these guys? Shivers down my spine.
My wife and I were here for our tenth anniversary. I tweeted him 4 or 5 times the week before and requested that song for us. Looking at the setlists for the 6 nights at the ryman that was the only night he played it. Coincidence?
I’m a musician from the shoals area too & you’d hear about Jason all the time. Blah, blah, blah, right? Idk if it’s bc I was a hack musician or what but I didn’t like him… ftr I’ve never met him or anything… two months ago I had a friend go on & on about this cat so I decided to check his music out (you know, to prove my friend wrong) & I be gah damn! Ppl can change their minds. I agree he’s probably the best songwriter of our time. Good job Jason & the 400 Unit. Y’all make me proud to be from the shoals.
Look forward to his concerts in Oslo in November. The set here is fantastic, a great mix between previous hits and the main songs from his last album (which is a classic in itself). If there is anything that could be better, it might be that they played for 20 to 30 more minutes in total, to get it just past a couple of hours. There is plenty material. As so many mention, Isbell is such a great writer, but he also seems to be a good storyteller and could use the stage just slightly more in that capacity - just one or two stories about a couple of the songs, musical influence from grand father growin' up etc. But that's just me, and it is a very, very minor suggestion to improve the live show - to differentiate further from recordings (I like the way some of the songs evolves live, some are clearly different from the album, which is a good thing). The best song writer of his generation.
RU-vid has some great stuff, but these are precious. I just wished I could afford the show in Berkeley June 8th. I'll catch you somewhere down the road...
