#Legend! This is a song! Decoration day is a southism for memorial day. Isbell didn't go solo by choice he was a bad drunk and the boys gave him the boot. They're amicable now. And he's been sober forever.

DECORATION DAY: A memorable tradition. Another custom found in Appalachia is the placing of memorabilia, toys and trinkets of the deceased loved ones on the grave.

God, I love Jason. This is based on a true story, Jason is distantly related to Holland Hill, the man that shot Lawson Sr, "his" father in this tale, as Jason is speaking from the viewpoint of a Lawson son, not the Hills. Lyrics: It's Decoration Day. And I've a mind to roll a stone on his grave. But what would he say. Keeping me down, boy, won't keep me away. It's Decoration Day. And I knew the Hill Boys would put us away, But my Daddy wasn't afraid. He said we'll fight till the last Lawson's last living day I never knew how it all got started A problem with Holland before we were born And I don't know the name of that boy we tied down And beat till he just couldn't walk anymore. But I know the caliber in daddy's chest And I know what Holland Hill drives. The state let him go, but I guess it was best 'Cause nobody needs all us Lawson's alive. Daddy said one of the boys had come by The lumber man's favorite son. He said, beat him real good but don't dare let him die And if you see Holland Hill run. Now I said, they ain't give us trouble no more That we ain't brought down on ourselves But a chain on my back and my ear to the floor And I'll send all the Hill Boys to hell. It's Decoration Day And I've got a family in Mobile Bay And they've never seen my daddy's grave. But that don't bother me, it ain't marked anyway. 'Cause I got dead brothers in Lauderdale south And I got dead brothers in east Tennessee. My Daddy got shot right in front of his house He had no one to fall on but me. It's Decoration Day And I've got a mind to go spit on his grave. If I was a hill, I'd have put him away And I'd fight till the last Lawson's last living day. I'd fight till the last Lawson's last living day. I'd fight till the last Lawson's last living day

After reading that he facts are presumably historically correct, I really thought it added another dimension to the song. A song that just keeps on growing (for me much like Danko & Manuel). Also impressive that he as a writer stuck to the facts and not just made something up in order to make a good song. This is certainly one of his best ever, if not the very best.

I think it would shock fans of other musical genres how common that is in country music: many of the greatest country musicians spent time as both songwriters and session musicians, so they're really polished in those areas as well as their singing. (think guys from Willie Nelson all the way through Chris Stapleton).

You should do another Isbell/DBT song Dress Blues. Zac Brown covered it two albums ago. Or my personal favorite Isbell/DBT song and best live song I’ve ever seen “Never Gonna Change” the live version of that always has an extended guitar solo battle with Jason and his 400 unit guitarist Sadler Vaden that is the best part of their live show.

Great reaction video, and a great song based on true events in Jason's family. Btw, Memorial Day is called Decoration Day in the south commonly. It was a family feud, like the Hatfield's and Mccoys in modern day, true story.

This was a real case back in the day. Jason Isbell is related to the Hill's which is why he chose to write it from the perspective of one of the Lawson boys. I'd like to second the Dress Blues request (especially the version he performed solo in 2006 shortly before leaving the DBT's)

I live not far from the Shoals. Around here Decoration Day is indeed the day you put flowers on graves. It's typically a Sunday in May or early June. Where my parents are buried its the 2nd Sunday in May. If associated with a rural church or community and there is a "Cemetary Committee" , the day is often utilized to collect donations for upkeep of the grounds for another year.

I love this song. He's done interviews on it, and it's one of the first songs he wrote. It is actually a true story involving his family in Alabama. If I remember right, he sings it from the perspective of a Lawson, but he's actually related to the Hill's in real life. Here's a newspaper clipping of this incident: news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1842&dat=19840327&id=DGEeAAAAIBAJ&sjid=mcgEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2812,5668515 You're well aware of Jason. New subscriber and enjoy the reactions... Isbell writes all of his stuff and is one of the best storytellers alive. He can tell fun stories (super 8, codeine), love songs like cover me up and if we were vampires that you’ve already reacted to (flagship that you haven’t), and just great dramatic songs (yvette, daisy mae, and songs that she sang in the shower). Some of my other favorites include Last of my kind, Tupelo, and Go it alone but you really can’t go wrong with anything he’s done. Still going through you content and I’m not sure if you have done any Drake White. He is another Alabama born singer that is more soulful country. The song he is best known for (Making me look good again) has a Stapleton vibe. He has a new EP live album out and I would recommend reacting to either the coast is clear or all would be right with the world off of that album.

This is the Drake White I would react to. It is “the coast is clear”, done on the 615 project. The band plays in a VW van in Nashville. Awesome job riding in a van... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UOlFNGJ9UCI.html

It’s a Jason Song from the minute he wrote it.. and I Love the truckers.. listen to the lyrics it’s about an old family feud (true story) .. but Jason flips from family to family to see it from both sides.... “Decoration day” is Memorial Day too most of the States, when you decorate family graves and say you’re pieces

Hey brother, You're dead right that there is a Hatfield and McCoy vibe to this. The more interesting part is that the song is actually based on Jason's family-he's related to Holland Hill, but he wrote the song from the perspective of the Lawson family, which is pretty cool if you want my opinion on it. Once upon a time, I actually tracked down the newspaper article about this shooting on Google, but I've long since lost the link to it. Good choice! Now check out "Never Gonna Change"!

I came to your page just searching out random commentary about Jason Isbell, and I'm loving your reactions to the material. I'm not sure where to post suggestions, but I have a couple that might be in your wheelhouse. First, any number of Gillian Welch songs deserve to be reviewed, but probably the ones that are first and foremost would be "Miss Ohio", "Revelator" and "Everything is Free" (that's in order of difficulty!). Second, several songs by husband and wife duo Brett and Rennie Sparks, also known as The Handsome Family. "Far From Any Road" was the song used for the opening theme for the first season of HBO's "True Detective," but for me "Drunk By Noon" is a personal favorite. "Amelia Earhart Versus The Dancing Bear" might be the band's most commercially successful song before "Far From Any Road" took off. Since you seem to love to do Isbell songs, I would point to toward "TVA", which I believe he recorded with The Drive By Truckers.

Welcome to the fam, Christopher! Glad you're enjoying the channel and reactions, and the comments are the place to post suggestions since I read them all. I'm gonna put Gillian on my list since I don't know any of her music and I like getting the women more notoriety, as there are so few of them representing the genre. Whatever dynamics are at work, I'm partial to hearing from the women. Thanks for the rec!

I’ve been listening to this song for years. Unfortunately, I missed it when it first came out, but discovered it on Jason’s Live From Alabama album back in 2013 which I bought the same day I bought Southeastern. It wasn’t until a year so ago when I was listening to it on the way to work that the line you mentioned really hit me. I’ve never heard anyone else make the suggestion that it was him who shot his father, but that line makes me think he did especially when you take into consideration others lines in the song such as “I have a mind to go spit on his grave” and the fact that the grave “ain’t marked anyway”.

@RockN2Country
@RockN2Country 5 лет назад
@JRockYQT I'm familiar with the reaction/review space, but if you read the comments as I do, and if you have high expectations as I do, that would give an indication as to why on occasion---not always---I'll say I don't know the backstory. As for Jason's song "Decoration Day," it had been requested quite a bit and, upon listening to it, I did not know what the term "Decoration Day" referred to, as it was obviously an important term and one the originated in the South, and I'm not from there. So rather than coming across as a know-it-all, and not wanting to offend my Southern brothers and sisters, I may throw a comment in like that. And it's completely unplanned. I hope that helps a bit.
