Jason Newsted and the Chophouse Band perform a cover of Doug Seeger's Down to the River on The Drive with Steve Jaxon radio show in Santa Rosa, CA in advance of their show at Hopmonk Sebastapol on September 15th.
To walk away from one of the biggest rock bands of all time took a lot of balls. Jason wasn't driven by money, just one dude wanting to do his thing. Amazing talent brother, this gave me chills.
@Anderson Cooper Jason’s version of his reasons for leaving correlates with james‘ Version and Lars‘ comments actually. It was ego, yes, but it was a healthy amount of ego that was needed to be able to put his foot down on something that was fucked up from the very beginning. Lars and James both openly admitted that Jason was pushed out, mistreated by control and hazing and ultimately never really ‘one of them’ because they wouldn’t let him. They regret it by now. Echobrain was just the final straw and Jason decided that this is where he draws the line and that it’s enough. lol
@steve k. He does what he wants. He did his own compositions with his previous band, now he does this, so what? There's no shame in covering standards.
@steve k. For now he's happy doing this, and his talent shines here. I've never heard him sing so well. That's no waste. We'll see what he does next. As for his creative input in Metallica, he did at least the main riff in Blackened, and I'm pretty sure the bass line in My Friend of Misery was his too. There must be more than these. The people officially credited aren't always the sole composers, especially in a band so tightly managed as Metallica is.
I don't know about ego, but per Mick Wall's Metallica Book "Enter Night", Jason put up with all kinds of crap from Lars and James. Kirk, of course, was nice.
I said soul... not principle song writer. His limited inclusion in writing for Metallica was based purely on Hetfield and Ulrich's control issues. I haven't heard the full length of the Newstead band, but I liked the Metal EP. It reminded me of Kill 'Em All actually.
+Gigerian ,.. you could not have said it better.. I give Jason credit for his efforts,.. but at the end of the day,sorry.. nothing extraordinary about his playing. sure he went crazy on stage,.. but does that count for how well you play.?
God knows I love Jasonic but to say he was the soul of Metallica after Cliff is totally false, I do respect your opinion, but Jason was the whipping boy that Metallica used to heal themselves after Cliff passed, the soul of the band has and always will be James' rhythm and scowl along with Lars beats even if he's not the best drummer, those 2 guys make Metallica, Jason was a part of the better LIVE years of the band but 9 outta 10 fans will say that Rob Trujillo is a better bassist and over all musician, I do believe Jason was a better backup vocalist and could carry a good lead. Albums like Kill, Ride, Master, Justice, Death Magnetic prove that the soul of the band was not Jason. Not Hating just opinionating. Again I love Jason but Metallica has and will continue to survive without him.
Fuck! I love this guy so awesome so talented so down to earth so fucking amazing! I fucking love his energy and how he does his own thing! This guy is just an awesome person to watch play
I thought this project would be completely out and away from me someone who likes his Newst3d music and all the metallica (that isn't the extreme thrash) and I love this! there's just that little something that brings this song alive!
@@robertherrick6703 nah, i saw metallica in December last year in SF and James just doesn’t have the vocal range and grit anymore. Jason’s lapped him at this point. He’s got more depth, stamina and range. James has a very characteristic voice, that was/is his saving grace, but he’s never been exceptionally good. James’ voice has always been power before technique, and now, that age is stunting his power, you see that he’s not born to be a singer. Nonetheless, he’s still insane on his guitar.
I really love this and am happy to see you found something to satisfy your spirit. As I don't think we will ever speak again. I am excited to see where this goes and only wish you the best. Keldo
