We're working on an updated series about JavaScript here: • JavaScript is Easy
This week, we're going way back to the basics. We refute the idea the Javascript is a hard language to learn, and share the surprising results of trying to teach a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old the fundamentals of computer programming. By the end of the video, you will have a foundation for creating reusable solutions to problems, and should have a grasp of the concepts of values, operators, expressions, variables, objects, and functions.

I've been a front-end developer for 5 years and this is one of the best introductions to Javascript I have seen. Nothing in depth; just the basics everyone should know.

I'm currently learning Javascript and my main problem has been that most resources just show you what to do, but none of them actually explain why it does it. I'm one of those odd people who has a hard time with that apparently. I need to understand the logic behind something before I can really get it. Now I do, this is exactly what I was looking for! Now when I go back and start writing functions, I understand what the hell I'm actually doing. haha Thank you so much! :-)

I feel your pain, that was me in Maths. Teachers could never explain to me why things did certain things, they just said "You do this and this to get this" and thus I was left annoyed not knowing why things did what they did. Unable to apply it to different situations because you can't apply things you don't completely understand!

I remember watching this same video when I was first learning 6 months ago. I'm re-watching it for the first time since then, and most of it seems like review now. It sucks really bad in the beginning especially if this is your first language. If anyone new is reading this, just keep at it. Do not learn/memorize any frameworks - jquery/react/node untill you master Vanilla JS. Godspeed.

This video marks the difference between learning JavaScript and UNDERSTANDING JavaScript! I swear 99.99% of all tutorials and online lessons teach you to learn javascript (i.e. memorize, replicate) but they don't explain JavaScript - like this video does. I personally can't learn something until I understand it. Kudos to you two for doing this! I look forward to your next videos!

goodnesss i wasn't expecting to learn anything here. i saw this video the other day popup on my youtube home recommendations and i added it to watch later like i do for tens of different videos and never watch them.i do watch a few based upon their clickbait value and this grossed my list at clickbait level 1000. i just wanted to see how can someone call javascript easy and damm benny.Mate you made it easier than gulping down an ice cream cone and jared, boyy you are the chocolate in which the coned is dipped and it holds the whole ice cream together at mcdonalds(i don't know if they sell something like that in the US !!!). Anyways, i have felt the kick that it is probably easy. As i now have the technical jargon that all others used that a layman never gets a hang and decides to leave. this is a comment on your channel after 2 years but you guys made me all excited and i had to right down this short speech of appreciation. cheers!!!!!

Guys! Please do more chill videos like this where you create programs together on a white board and call them code sessions or something. This is a great teaching approach that kept a lot of people engaged for over 45 minutes. You did a great job. Now you can take the formula of the delivery and implement it to teach a bunch of cool things in a really cool way. You could combine the idea with screenshot coding to put two environments together.

I followed along sooooo well with a smile on my face because I was finally actually understanding this stuff. The first guy was explaining it perfectly, and dumbed down/simplified just how I like it, but when the second guy got on I started to not follow. Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy I can tell, but he was talking a bit to fast and his explanations were confusing because I felt he was going back and forth a bit between things. Great video non the less, I kept going back to parts until I could understand.

You guys rock. I'm a designer who also works as an ESL English teacher. I've recently gotten interested in coding, but I can't seem to find someone who'll just teach the ABCs and 123s of Javascript before trying to get me to read a whole paragraph. My goal (if I finally figure it out) is to help other total beginners by explaining it like they're five. You hit the nail on the head by showing that your kids can understand it first. More people would learn to code if it was explained like this. Thanks.

Right at the 39 min mark it is stated that args and params are the same thing - This isn't essentially true. If you reference an arg when you mean a param you're going to confuse the person you're talking to. The values placed in the function signature at it's declaration are parameters. The values placed in the function call are arguments. function makeDistinction(param1, param2) {

If you took a common javascript (for example, something that's used on a lot of websites like image transitions or something commonly used) and broke it apart in to it's smallest components. So basically, starting from the top working down rather than from primitives upwards . . . . seeeeee, I'm learning the terminology (almost!). Nice work, keep it up.

I just took a 8 week JavaScript class at my local college and it turned out to be so much more complicated than I imagine. Granted that it was my preconception going in that was the problem. I though it was just related to the browser so how difficult can that be? But it was so involved and so powerful so that’s what made it difficult. I did not expect such a huge range of functionalities.
