Retail can really suck. I think everyone should have to do it so they have some empathy. Food service also.

Risa, as someone who worked retail for 30 years, I can honestly say it takes all kinds. I remember my father used to tell me that "you can't make everyone happy, but you can sure piss them all off at once". Let what people say roll off you like water down a duck's back. When you let them upset you you're giving them your power. Don't let anyone take your power away (or change who you are). You're perfect exactly as you are.

Having worked in retail myself I can say that your father’s words are 100% true!! Your advice is correct but sometimes it is hard to put it into practice but I think remembering what your father said will make it so much easier to remember to put into practice

Hi Risa. Unfortunately when working with the public, there is always someone trying to steal your joy. I was a Medical Clinician for 40 years and was called the B word. My comeback, with a big smile, I said “Thank you, you know that means I’m Beautiful, Intelligent, Thoughtful, Courageous and Honest.” The expression on that persons face and their loss of words was PRICELESS. So don’t take it to heart, in this life one “gets what they give”. Love your videos and have learned much from you. 🌹

I’ll never forget when I was a front store supervisor and yes I was (am but working on it) over weight. Twice I was asked when I was due. The first time I burst into tears, the 2nd time I replied “no ma’am I’m just fat!” That hurt.

Risa, OMY gosh, been there!! I worked for Sephora when I was 21 and you wouldn't BELIEVE the stories I have. Not only of rude customers but of the cattiness between the girls who worked there. The manager would play favorites and they were BRUTAL!

I had worked in retail. I had a woman get very angry with me because she wasn’t happy with me for her fifty percent off top. She kept insisting her $35 dollar item was $10. I had the manager come to answer her questions. While checking out in a huff she informed me that she had a college education. I told her that I was sure she did not have a degree in mathematics!

When I was young, I worked in a chain steakhouse. I was mistreated and harassed by people of all stripes. Sometimes, people are just having a bad day or are going through some kind of issue. But in general, I think these types of people are perpetually unhappy and tend to take it out on others. Please try let these memories go because it is definitely not YOU - it is them!

The public can be brutal. I work in retail and wow do I have stories!! The most recent one was probably the most hurtful to me and I’ve been in retail over 20 years and I thought I had a thick skin but this woman thought I was being rude to her just cuz I asked her to choose her type of receipt on the pinpad. She said “ is that how you talk to customers? So I simply said “ I was just asking you to choose your receipt” well she took that as being rude and mind you she was already being rude herself by being on her phone so she then says to the person she’s talking to “ this cashier is being so rude to me , she’s probably in a bad mood because she’s making minimum wage. “ I literally lost it !!!! I said “ ok that was so not necessary!!!! Thankfully my next customer in line heard the entire conversation and said “ wow what was her problem?!?! “ it felt good to hear that because clearly that rude woman apparently is miserable and took it out on me. That incident really shook me but I had some very nice customers saying you handled that very well and we appreciate you ! don’t let her ruin your day!

I love hearing your stories. I do agree - - everyone should work with the public because it isn't easy. Just one ugly customer can ruin your whole day. Also, I think everyone should be a waitress/waiter once in their life because it makes you have a better appreciation of the challenges. Helps make you a better customer.

When I was a server in college, my worst customers were an elderly couple who were late for their movie at the dollar theatre next door. They ordered water with their entrees and stiffed me completely after yelling that the food was late and they were going to miss the opening credits. The server has nothing to do with the speed of the kitchen! Nor are they responsible for the quality of the food. I made less than $20 that night because everyone tipped $1 on their $8.95 two-for-one pasta special with free breadsticks and water. I definitely cried when I got home... and never went back. And my friends hate going out with me because of how much I overtip lol. But they have never been servers!

@@AllySa33, So sad. I remember waitressing as a 2nd job and it was at a fancy sandwich/sundae shop. A church group of 12 came in and I worked my butt off for them. I did everything but wipe their chins off and they left me a 35cent tip. And to add insult to that, it was my dentist paying the bill.
@AllySa33
@AllySa33 18 дней назад
@@mbraden8949 Oh no! That's terrible. My first job when I was 16 was working behind the counter at an ice cream shop. Back in the days of the old fashioned registers, you had to make change in your own head. I'm so bad at math, I actually lost money. My drawer came up short so much in the beginning. People would walk away laughing when I gave them back too much instead of correcting me... That just popped in my head... I must have blocked it out lol. Burger King was my second job. They tried me on the register then made me work in the back. I also got fired from a hostessing job at a Chinese restaurant and they never told me why. Needless to say I had no confidence during my high school and college years lol. I don't know if I was homely or just stupid 😂

Love your stories. I worked retail for many years and was an area manager and trained my employees that these types of customers are having a bad day before they even come into your store. You can only do so much, but just smile and make them feel special the best you're able to. It's one of the hardest jobs because you had to be an actress 10 hours a day and felt exhausted by the end of the day.

Both incidents happened when you were so young. In 20's or 30's, I would have cried, too!! Now in the 6th decade, would be a whole different story. No tears, just pray for them (after the shock wears off) and move on. One of the few benefits of aging is being more sure of yourself, and gaining wisdom (with confidence). You know who you are! We love you, Risa. ❤

Oh Risa, I worked for LaPrarie for years and I could tell you stories and experiences I had with customers that would shock you. I worked in cosmetics for years and learned a lot of life lessons that I will remember for the rest of my life. The only difference between us is that it turned me off to ever worked for cosmetics again and would never go back. I’ve watched you for a long time and find you to be the most beautiful, kind, non aggressive influencer that would never push products, you don’t have a mean bone in your body. You are also so talented and artistic person in the business. I adore and admire you! Your outstanding beauty is intimidating to people and that’s probably why they react with insecurity.

I had a coworker who was truly wonderful with clients. However, he was a nasty beast to contractors he hired to work on his home or to retail employees. We’d hear him on his cell phone berating his house cleaner, yard guy, or the restaurant manager where he just had lunch. This happened several times a week. Overhearing these conversations was stressful for us. He really had some kind of psychological issue that caused him to harass people he knew would have to listen to him due to the nature of their work.

I've been working retail and customer service for years. Decades. And many people are decent. Some people are in a bad mood and share it. And some people need to be (more) medicated. 😂 Now I work in a state food stamp and Medicaid office. I'm the first face people see when you walk in the door. And to many people, I'm the face of "government" when they're frustrated about their benefits. 🙄 I've developed lots of techniques for coping and deflection, and I've done my share of crying in the back room. I also have a collection of cards, notes, letters, (and a couple of houseplants) from people who appreciated my help. I try to focus on them. Risa, you're the real deal, honest, sweet, genuine, and level. If someone doesn't like it, they can go elsewhere to have the day they deserve! 😂😘💐

So much emotions from clients they just dump or project on you as the service person. It got so bad in my last years of service that I got into a burm out and quit my job to never return! Never EVER will I return in that industry. I still love make up, I still do the whole sjabang on my face every day. It just make some happy!🥰 In my burnout I started painting and creating other things. I've been called a racist too, similar situation. I'm 66 years old, but my mind & body feels young. (or at least in my 40's) To get to my point, I've come to a place where I just don't care what I'm called anymore. I treat ALL people the way I want to be treated. I truly feel that some people are miserable, & have a need to feel above others. I now just let them say say what they want, & simply don't react. I finish the transaction, & say thanks for shopping at *****, or whatever is appropriate. I've been told "you make my day when I come in here." .. I've been called "precious" & "adorable". I've had customers send great reviews on my customer service. So being called "bitc!, racist, "you old hag" & the likes don't mean a thing to me 😊

I completely understand. I was once accused of being a racist because the retailer I worked for's section of products for African-Americans was only 4 foot by 7 foot big. Was that okay? Heck no!! But this one particular lady spent her entire time in the store implying my racism and trying to pull me into an argument. I smiled, agreed with her sentiment on how tiny the section is, and told her to have a wonderful day.

Hearing your stories made me smile… I’m in Farmington Hills, MI and Jacobsons was my most favorite store in downtown Birmingham, so beloved and missed. People are just people. You never know where someone is coming from. I’ve learned it may be nothing to do with me, they are coming after a bad day/week/year or have something going on. Often you are the one they may lash out at yet not knowing you. I used to analyze and feel bad for every interaction that wasn’t perfect. Even 99% was not good enough. But now I learned I can’t do that. It can get to you. You are a great person. That shows through every video you make.

It’s so funny, exactly when you finished your hair at the end I thought: “She always does the best hairstyles “, and then you popped up the writing about your hair not being good 😂 Your hair is always amazing Risa!

This is bringing back PTSD issues from working at cosmetic counters. People unload their BS on retail employees. I eventually became a cosmetic department manager and things became worse. I loved working in cosmetics but the BS killed that love. I know you speak the truth.

I worked in public facing roles for 36 years (started at 19, retired at 55), and this is pretty normal, lol. It's usually always about the customer and something going on in their life/head, not about the person helping them. But so sorry these things happened to you. :( Appreciate you sharing these very honest stories!

Working with the public is so hard. I agree with you, everyone should work behind a counter so they can see what you go through dealing with the public. I know what it’s like also, I sold fragrances and cosmetics you meet all kinds.

Risa, any decent person can immediately sense your kindness, empathy, and character. That’s why we love you so. You’re very straightforward but without condensation. BTW, as a highly sensitive person myself, I immediately bonded with you about the crying…like you said, we can be too empathetic at times. Anyway, please never doubt your goodness!!❤️❤️

I worked at Neimans for many years and other retail and wholesale positions. I look back at difficult situations and realize now that those people were the ones with the issues. New sales people were like magnets for abusers. Although I was the very nicest person I had a plan that I would one day the worst person would approach me would and would say the most shocking thing with swear words then they would march over to my boss and she would not believe the woman. Because I was so nice. I never found that situation but it was very empowering. I actually loved helping customers.

Risa I can't imagine you ever purposely offending anyone. There is no way I could work with the public even if bad events happen infrequently. My skin is too thin for it; I admit it. There is no excuse for abuse. You are one of my all time favs and love you and your videos! Have a great 4th!

People love to project their own insecurities on to others. Working in customer service myself, I've been called all sorts and at this point it's water off a duck's back. I realise that I don't need to justify myself because someone doesn't love and accept themselves or just having a bad day. Can't please'em all!

Wow I worked at Jacobsons in Saginaw Michigan in the late 70's as a model who put on the clothes they picked amd then I would walk around with a sign and talk to people about the outfit to shoppers. It was so much fun.

Hi Risa! I loved this video! Ugh, I use to work retail and I am also a sensitive person and not naturally outgoing! I cried 2 times after being yelled at by two different bosses. I quit one of those jobs right after the manager yelled at me and another girl. I was 4 months pregnant at the time. I'm sorry to hear about those two negative experiences you had! How terrible. But meeting a President on your first day! Wow. What a great story. :)

I LOVED Jacobsons! We lived in Toledo for several years and I was heartbroken when they closed. I worked semi-retail ( it would take too long to explain) and while the VAST majority of clients were wonderful and fun, there was always those 2 or 3 that did their best to not be nice and seemed to enjoy being miserable.

HI Risa. I opened a Macys in Sonoma County Ca in 1981. I was working for Estee Lauder. I agree with everything you said. Most people were great, because Iwas very authentic and had their best interest at heart. If my line wasn't appropriate for them, I would walk them to another line. Some people however were just nasty. I was very young and didnt have the maturity to understand sometimes people take out their problems on the sales associate. I particularly loved seeing how much people felt more confident when I educated them about what worked best for them. I enjoy your tutorials and education on products I haven't tried yet. I enjoy your channel and all your videos. I'm a working cosmetologist of 40 years. I find it relaxing to watch other artists looks and I'm always open to new things. I think your lovely. Dont let anyone steal your joy. Barbara Windsor Ca.
