Well it started off with Jay painting his bathroom for Erik so he could do an ad for Benjamin Moore….. but that turns in to Jay renovating their entire bathroom. With the help of his daughter and beautiful wife Stephanie, Jay gives his bathroom a full makeover! Jay even paints his shower and replaces the old drop down ceiling with Armstrong Ceilings tongue and groove ceiling planks! Oh and also a new fart fan.

Jay use a fiber glass glow stick to push your wire thru you’d insulation. Lowes and Home Depot carry them

Should have just used the existing wire as a pull string (if possible) otherwise you could have just shoved a fish stick up through the inside of the box and grabbed it from up top, wouldn’t have had to cut and patch that hole above the box.

Electrician here. you used the wrong wire with that fan. You should of used 12/2 and tied vanity light with the exhaust fan light and installed a GFCI instead of the half switch receptacle.

I'm pretty sure you screwed that bathroom circuit using the white 14 guage in the yellow 12 guage circuit. You can't mix guages unless the breaker is the lower value for the different guages of wire but bathrooms must be 12 guage and 20 amp so you probably need to change thst wire to 12 guage.

Around 12:30 In the video just wondering why the pex lines are 3/4 coming out of the wall? Just curious if there was any real reason. I’ve always just seen 1/2” for rough in’s.

Next time, just use the existing wire as a pulling wire for two new wires, that way you dont have to cut a hole in your wall. Great transformation tho.

PRO TIP - use a piece of pex 3/4 water line ( just a bit longer than the distance of the 2 holes ) and run it from the outlet hole up to the cutout and then run the wire through the pex. Cut the electrical wire and hold from the top and remove the Pex

The only thing that puzzles me is why you have the trim around the door and floor in brown instead of matt black as the rest of your bathroom. It is good to keep several bags of hot mud for simple quick patching like you needed to do. Hot mud is much stronger than spackling or ready mix.

Can’t believe I’m going to give you a tip (from wiring boats), but instead of fishing a wire into a tight space, you could have disconnected the existing yellow wire from the switch and used it to pull some string from the switch to the ceiling (wrap the string around the wire and the cover in electrical tape). Then tape the new and old wires in the ceiling to the string you’ve now pulled through, and pull them back through the cavity to the switch. With one person pushing up top and pulling on the bottom, it’s very easy. If you get stuck just push/pull back and forth a few times and it should find a way through. Make sure your tape covers any tag ends and makes a good ramp at the connection from thin string to thick wire+string to reduce snags.

Not sure if anyone has said it yet but you could’ve used the first wire to fish two new wires up through the wall and you wouldn’t have to cut the drywall above the switch. Hope this helps next time, renovation looks great!

Jay, they had the right idea but the proper way you’re doing is is to take a piece of wood screw it through the square into the back of the wood wood is behind the sheet rock. Screw the board screw the street rock into the board one screw put it up behind the wall turn it, so it will connect to the outside of the wall and then screw through the wall with two screws to hold the wood in place one on one side one on the other that will bring that wood closer to the hole and the sheet rock will be even with the cut outand then you can use sparkle or whatever you want to clean it up. Let it sit for a couple days and sand it down and paint it.

Nice job! Another way I used to use when I was a painter-decorator for putting new dry wall in a cavity, was to cut it to size, then put a screw in the middle as a handle, put the filler - you guys call it mud - around the edges. Then when its dry, take out the screw and boom. its done. However in saying that, I did actually like the method you used. That actually looks easier. See; you learn something everyday 🙂

It looks great, no matter what I say next. I would have made the door trim darker to match the shower or at least the furniture. And consider laying vinyl over the tiles - maybe dark too - to complete the look.

Round Pancake box is the usual fix for that vanity light. Its only the depth of the sheetrock and code compliant.

Nice work putting some crown molding in the gaps left by all that caulking. :) The whole project looks great. Reno bathroom in three weekends is legit. Enjoy your new space. I'd be curious to get an update one year on to see how the paint on the shower is holding up.
