Note: Click "Show More" for lyrics. Jay Ferguson (b. 10 May 1947, Burbank, California) is an American rock and roll/pop musician, known for his work with Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne, and his 1978 solo hit "Thunder Island". His later career has been as a composer of music for television programs and films. Ferguson recorded three studio albums and a limited-run live album for Asylum. He scored a Top 10 hit with the title song on his second solo album, Thunder Island, which peaked at #9 in the US, and another hit with "Shakedown Cruise" from his last Asylum album, Real Life Ain't This Way. After his recording contract for Asylum was completed, Ferguson changed record labels, and recorded two more solo albums for Capitol Records.
Lyrics:
Thunder Island (J. Ferguson / B. Szymczyk / Asylum)
Sha, la, la, la, la, la, my lady.
In the sun with your hair undone
Can you hear me now callin' your name from across the bay?
A summer's day laughin' and a hidin'
Chasin' love out on Thunder Island
Hey, hey, hey, hey
She was the color of the indian summer
And we shared the hours without number
Until one day when the sky turned dark and the winds grew wild
Caught by the rain and blinded by the lightning
We rode the storm out there on Thunder Island
I held her close until the storm passed
And we fell down laughing in the wet grass
Both our bodies drying in the sunshine
Sweet sunshine
So
Sha, la, la, la, la, la my lady
In the sun with your dress undone
Now every mile away and every day
Cuts a little bit deeper
I'll remember the nights in the cool sand
Makin' love out on Thunder Island
Goodbye Thunder Island

So too did the Stones with "Start Me Up," which opened with a similar "stop-start" guitar lick. As the history of recording that song went, Keith Richards walked by in the control room and asked co-producer Chris Kimsey to "bin that -- sounds like something I heard on the radio today," referring likely to "Thunder Island," which was on its way to reaching #9 when "Start Me Up" had first been recorded in late 1977, during the early part of the Some Girls sessions. Fortunately, Kimsey didn't completely erase the track, since it was resurrected less than four years later for its release on Tattoo You.

To my friends who live and reminisce, what comes to mind when you replay the classic? I think about the simple times when life was just so damn enjoyable and not complex. I cry when I replay this classic, not because it refers to days gone by, but because of those who cannot relate because they were not there. Take it all in, enjoy the moment, and let's continue to celebrate the era.

"Thunder Island" is one of those songs that stood out from the rest when it was a hit on AM radio in 1978. A lot of the other songs in heavy rotation sounded like drivel, and they were soft as pablum compared to this. Thunder Island had a great sound and it just jumped out of the speakers when it came on. I was just a little teeny bopper then, but I was into KISS, RUSH, Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin. So I really took notice when a Top 40 song sounded like Rock. This did!

Back when it was about the music. It was about what you sounded like, not appearances. 'Videos' were done almost as a joke, a throwaway where little to no effort was focused. Which is great. Not a multi-million dollar serious critical humongous production as now. Very low budget. Since the music could survive on it's own. Artists didn't need visual gimmicks because their music said it all-so strong and soulful. Here's to keeping this wonderful feel music alive forever ~🎵

Well said. They feel like they had to go 100 miles an hour or have a bunch of ho's in a video!

♫ I held her close Until the storm passed And we fell down laughing in the wet grass Both our bodies drying in the sunshine, sweet sunshine So, sha-la-la-la-la-la my lady ♫
