Note: Click "Show More" for lyrics. "Smiling Faces Sometimes" is a soul song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for the Motown label. It was originally recorded by the Temptations in 1971. Producer Norman Whitfield had the song re-recorded by the Undisputed Truth the same year, resulting in a number-three Billboard Hot 100 position for the group. "Smiling Faces" was the only Top 40 single released by the Undisputed Truth, and was included on their debut album The Undisputed Truth.
Smiling Faces Sometimes
(N. Whitfield/B. Strong - Gordy Records/Jobete Music/BMI)
Smiling faces sometimes
Pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces
Of the evil that lurks within (can you dig it?)
Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
Oh, oh, yeah
Let me tell you
The truth is in the eyes 'cause the eyes don't lie, amen
Remember, a smile is just a frown turned upside down my friend
So, hear me when I'm saying
Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes, yeah
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
(Beware) beware of the handshake
That hides the snake (can you dig it, can you dig it?)
I'm a-tellin' you beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Jealousy,(jealousy) misery (misery) envy (envy)
I tell you you can't see behind
Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes
Hey, they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
Hey, your enemy won't do you no harm
(Rap on) 'cause you'll know where he's comin' from
Don't let the handshake and the smile fool ya
Take my advice, I'm only tryin' to school ya
Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes

To me, this song warns against emotionally manipulative people who smile at you but have sinister, ulterior motives inside that you can almost sense by looking at them in their two eyes. I say this as someone who has been through emotional manipulation and survived! May this warning go out to all people, no matter what age, race, political affiliation, religion, sexuality, etc they are and let everyone know that smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friends and that the truth really does lie in the truthful eyes!

This song is truthful regarding so called friends smiling faces pretending to be your friends. I wish I could go back into time with the knowledge I have now to undue the mistakes I made in life. @That70sGuitarist
@That70sGuitarist 3 года назад
@@Wolverines4ever-sl1js Unfortunately, it's still music of sorts, regardless of whether or not we older folks appreciate or even understand it. It's one of the ironies of life; older generations tend to frown on the music of younger generations. That's just how it goes. Here's a great example of that in action; my Da grew up listening to classic big band music of the 30's and 40's, and dismissed my generation's music as "noise" or even "electronic music," despite the fact that classic rock, soul, R&B and blues have virtually nothing whatsoever for common with "electronic music" like the current EDM scene. He also described all the "yeah, yeah," "baby" and "lover" lyrics as "boring and repetitive," despite having grown up listening to music with gibberish lyrics like "hutsut rallston on a rillarot and a bralla bralla suet" or "mairzy doats and doazy doats and little lambsy divey, a kiddley divey too, wooden shoe." (Believe it or not, that last one translates as, "mares eat oats and does eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy, a kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you," believe it or not.) 🤣 The moral of the story is basically this; Just because we old fuddy-duddies don't like the current preferred style doesn't mean it's not music, no matter how horrendously bad it might sound to us 😉 Have you ever heard some of today's most popular singers perform without the benefit of Auto-Tune? Stevie Nicks did a duet of "Rhiannon" with Taylor Swift a few years ago, and "caterwauling" is the kindest word I could use to describe Ms. Swift's efforts! This despite her having been called "the voice of her generation" by many so-called "music critics!".🤣

@Stewart Bloor.....Spot on! Undisputed Truth were one of my favourite Soul bands of the '70's with their incredible and seminal take on Norman Whitfield's 'psychedelic soul' productions. If you haven't already heard them, just check out albums such as 'Cosmic Truth', 'Down To Earth', 'Higher than High' and 'Method to the Madness' - simply sublime! I was lucky enough to see them perform live and at the height of their success in the mid-70's - and they were absolutely amazing. I still remember their rendition of the Temptation's 'The Law of the Land' which brought the house down and was followed by their massive, rare groove anthem - 'You + Me = Love'. UT never got the acclaim they rightfully deserved IMHO - but they were extremely significant and influential in the development of 'psychedelic soul' and arguably among its finest exponents.

Universal truths seem to go on forever. Brilliant tune! However viewing the video, even on my best day, nobody would want to see me in white tights and a cape! Kudos to them for having the guts--and bodies--to pull that off! If I tried it, it would just scare 😱 folk into therapy!

In my youth this was very good advice. To trust is a very valuable camodity. Miss placed trust is very painful when the truth comes out. Truth comes from GOD. LIES COMES FROM THE DEVIL 👿 HIMSELF IN MANY DISGUISES. MAY WE INTENTLY LISTEN TO THE PROMPTINGS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. AMEN
