It's such a good song you hardly even notice although you hear a banjo there is no banjo player on stage. Bass, guitar, drums. No banjo. It's still great.
A very memorable song, it brings me back to 1971 with crystal clarity. It casts a pall - a good one - with its deep brooding tone and powerful vocal delivery. A masterpiece really.

When I first heard this song back in the 1974 as a 17 y/o teenager, I thought the "Uga chaka uga" chant was about the New Guinea tribes going about the war chants ready to fight against another tribes in the country of New Guinea that's north of Australia.

Wow look at that audience 😅 They look bored! I would be rocking! I understand now what performers mean when they talk about a good audience....or a bad one.
The guys would sneak up behind you in the hall, and go blay!!! like a madman-a little lovin' on me, to scare us to pieces. Don't ask me! It was a thing they did, and still remember and laugh about. 🤣
Yes, it was released in 1975. It didn't become a hit in the US until 1976. From Wikipedia: In the United States, the song became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Easy Listening Singles chart on 14 February 1976 (becoming that chart's overall No. 1 song for 1976),
