Jay Shetty has a series on the Calm app called “Daily Jay”, which I always found weird. First off, calling it that wasn’t normal - the other daily contributors call their series things like “daily calm” and “daily trip”. It struck me as so odd because it didn’t tell me much about what the series offered, and like Ethan I had never heard of him before despite his apparent success…so I was like “who tf is this dude”? And ignored the series mostly until I gave it a try out of curiosity (it was CONSTANTLY pushed at the top of recommendations). It was fine…mostly lessons encouraging everyday mindfulness, which are a net good. But why not call it something like “daily moment” or “daily lesson” or something less…”Jay Shetty” branded? The concept of mindfulness is neither unique nor original to him. Also, he just…has SUCH self-help scammer energy. I also avoided the series for that reason, and when I tried it, his voice made the feeling even worse so I stopped. These guys always tend to have that “too happy to be trusted” expression…like you can tell the smile is forced or otherwise used as a mask to cover something up. When you hear him speak, he is pushing his voice so hard that it makes alarm bells go off…it’s like he is in the uncanny valley of voices from trying to hard to sound confident. To be fair to Jay, he never said anything that I outright disagreed with, but I still was just…so put off. I’m genuinely surprised I was right.

Are you kidding me? Jay is above us all, hovering ethereally over every other human being because he was (don't you dare forget) a monk for two/three years. He started out authentic but began riding the wave of his alleged monk life as if it was something, he had lived for years and started cashing in the big bucks. When I saw him with the Smiths, I knew that he is well on his way to be a fraud. Why? Because birds of a feather, flock together. I absolutely hate that he leaves his wife alone for months on end to travel around the world; she's out there dancing on Instagram and selling tea increasingly (and, when they are together, they behave like brother and sister because they've lost the connection). She's very much becoming another online lonely woman. I now see Jay as a fraud who has sold his soul for fame. Also, he is beautiful which has helped him immensely.

Interesting expose and many thought-provoking points made. However, the Hare Krishnas have in no way "gone underground" due to anything that has happened in the past. They are highly visible around London Soho and Oxford Street. They have a temple and a temple restaurant in Soho Street which is so popular with the public that you often struggle to get a seat. Also they run an annual festival parade, Rathayatra, in which around 15,000 people, mainly Hindus, participate. They are similarly visible around Watford, with their UK HQ nearby. The first time I visited there, I think it was 2013, then soon-to-be ex-monk Jay Shetty showed me around. He said he was about to leave the monkhood and get married. I have since then been peripherally aware of his career and rise-to-fame, though I have never specifically followed it or him. I'm just not into these motivational speaker types.

Meeting an actual monk and being part of attending iskcon events is two different things lol. In iskcon most of the men dress somewhat like that. Going to temple and rapping about the Hindu God krishna in a youth activity doesn't really indicate one wanting to be rapper as their goal. I wish that guy did more research about Hinduism.
