280 chased with in 40 overs just for 2 wickets. Once up on a time Sri Lanka. What a memory. Aravida the best batsman produced by Sri Lanka. Underrated in world stage a True Legend.
I remember those days every school boy in SL wanted to get their hands on a Kookabura Bubble (Jayasuriya) or a Kookabura Supreme (Arvinda) the famous bats of these two absolute legends!!
It's not just about the Kookabura's of just these two special former entertaining super cricketer's but the entire Kukaboora fraternity owning batsmen were on the top of their games man..following next to kukaboora were gray nicolas fraternity & MRF.
Me and Aravinda de Silva Studies Same School at Colombo D.S.Senanayake.college In 1998 He visited to my class room it's happy moments for me I am just 14 years old that time
Love from india... I grown up watching Sri Lankan cricket team performance both in tests & ODI....from 1994 they started to show their fighting ability....1995 much improved team.. 1996 world cup win....Thanks to Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda desilva, Romesh kaluvitarana, Arjuna Ranatunga, Muralidharan, vaas, atapattu & some other players....what a team then.... unbeatable....I am a fan of Aravinda desilva.....
I still dont understand why both these greats averaged so low in ODIS. Jayasuriya around only 28-29 and De silva 34. Jayasuriya should have averaged well over 40 and Desliva near 50 the way they played

At that time, Sanath and Aravinda were the world's best batsmen while Akram and Waqar were the world's best bowlers. Greatly enjoyed their cricket although they mostly always butchered my team (India). Lots of love and respect to them for all the great memories.

One thing seems true. From 1990s generations SOME batsmen from all teams have surely found easy ways to play only on Ind, they make stats, create records, get into the form lost, perform well only on Ind. Unfortunate thing is, this is still TILL DATE. More unfortunate is, with the interference of corporates ruling cricket im Ind exclusively along with BCCI's and poor team selection, always Ind is suffering across formats. This is impacting IPL mostly played on our soil, becoming easy for all foreign players and are taking on us with ease, be it bowling or batting. These days our batsmen are producing more results, but bowlers are not selected wisely. Everywhere there is politics ruling. Our selection has always been poor, lots of politics. Good lot amount of worthy players out of 140 Cr population, hardly we see allrounders in team selected. If u take a WestIndies, Aussies, SouthAfrica, England, NewZealand, SriLanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh also they still can bowl using potential 7 bowlers who can manage the entire match. This is also a fate our Ind suffering from. These days I noticed Ind ARE NOT ASKED TO CHASE while they lose toss on any team, entire world knoes Ind can somehow chase these days. Also ICC should make sure to include 3 Tests, 5 ODIs as mandatory thing even though 3 to 5 T20Is are scheduled in a bilateral series. This will save Tests and ODI formats also. Recent Asia Cup is conducted only in T20I format, this is bad.
@@Deira854 jayasuriya's batting avg is 32 in ODI's not 28-29 get you facts straight. Secondly in those days opener with the avg of 30+ was considered good.
@@arslaanpasha3334 ok but 32 is not good either, also are you kidding? in those days lara was averaging near 47 and Sachin around 44. in 1980s Viv Richards was averaging close to 50 in ODIs so no, average of 32 is below average and I just checked, in the 1990s, Jayasuirya average 28, in the 2000's he improved to make it 32
Chasing 280+ runs in 40 overs. How fire this game without power play or strategic time outs or reviews. We are the witness of the Real cricket!! Hatsoff team SriLanka

@@Deira854 Sri Lanka gained test status in 84. Though they were talented they didn't have the experience of playing elite cricket and what it takes to win. For example any one that plays county cricket, state cricket australia etc is taught at a young age about staying in the wicket and that a 100 is the ultimate goal. Those early days the Lankan batsman didn't pay heed to statistics or knew how to build centuries. They were plenty of times Aravinda would go berserk in his 30s so as to improve the team scoring rate and give up his wicket. Plus Sri Lankan batsman/fans (used ) think attack is the best form of defence. The turning point imo was Aravinda playing county cricket in 94 and there he learnt that centuries and staying in the wicket matters over style. I think Aravinda, Arjuna, and Sanath were far mole talented than Sanga and Mahela. The reason Sachin is so good is cos he has Gavaskar to emulate, the Aussies had Bradman and others etc. or Aravinda and Sanath they didn't have anyone in Sri Lanka , and I think they all idolized Gary Sobers and Viv Richards.
What you call "Power play" today, is actually the fielding restriction of not keeping more than 2 fielders outside the 30 yards circle, and those were enforced in the first 15 overs of one day cricket, in those days. In fact Jayasuriya's biggest claim to fame in cricket, is his ruthless utilization of these fielding restrictions, particularly during the late 90s.
@@Deira854 Jayasuriya ended his career with a career average of 32, and bare in mind that his career only took off in the late 90s, by that time he had already played close to 100 matches, with an under 20 career average. From 1996 world cup onwards, his career entered a different phase.
280 in 40 overs against a bowling attack that had Wasim,Waquar and Saqlain (possibly the greatest ODI bowling attack in the history)..By 1997, the best odi batsman in the world were Sanath and Aravinda..Same country having best 2 batters in the world, Its never happened probably in the history of cricket ..and this was the result..an batting masterclass that is waaayyy ahead of its time !!
I still dont understand why both these greats averaged so low in ODIS. Jayasuriya around only 28-29 and De silva 34. Jayasuriya should have averaged well over 40 and Desliva near 50 the way they played
Vivid demonstration of two contrasting batting styles of two masters. Aravinda precision and technique Vs Sanas power and timing. As some one said in comments Surgeon vs Butcher. Eye candy.
That’s irrelevant to this video. And don’t compare Aravinda and Sanath with Shewag. They are 03 international players who have their own different personalities.
Aravinda can even bat using stump. He only needs something to bat.Such a inborn gifted cricketer he was.Pleasure to watch. The greatest batsman of Sri Lanka have ever produced!
THIS WAS TIME WHEN SRI LANKA WAS AN UNBEATABLE TEAM AND THEY JUST ABOUT OWNED EVERY TEAM, THRASHED ALL TEAMS IN TO PIECES, HAD A WORLD CLASS BATTING ,BOWLING AND FIELDING TEAM... I WISH TO SEE THEM COMEBACK TO THAT LEVEL... THIS PAKISTAN ATTACK HAD WASIM,WAQAR,SAQLAIN,AFRIDI,A MAHMOOD AND ALL THE WERE TAKEN TO CLEANERS DURING period 1995- 1999 , I REMEMBER SACHIN WAS SAYING EVEN A 1000 RUNS AGAINST THIS SRI LANKA IS NOT SAFE SCORE AND HE IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE COZ THIS TEAM HAD THE GUTS TO CHASE DOWN ANY SCORE SET BY ANY TYPE OF ATTACK ...
Being a Srilanka fan, I would say that you have overrated the Srilankan team by overlooking the real scenario. Srilanka weren't that dominant in the year 1995 upto the early months of 1996 before the World Cup. You can check the records here www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/series/index.html In that period Srilanka emerged as a strongly competitive team. Immediately after the world cup 1996, Srilanka lost to India by 12 runs chasing only 200 runs in a Singer Cup triangular Series involving Pakistan also. In the final, Srilanka lost to Pakistan being all out for only 172 runs chasing 215 runs!!! In October 1996, Srilanka failed to qualify for the final of a 4 nation tournament involving Kenya, Pakistan & South Africa. Pakistan scored 371/9 when Afridi scored a century of just 37 balls and Srilanka lost the game by 82 runs & couldn't qualify for the final. In November 1996, Srilanka also failed to reach the final of the Sharjah triangular involving Pakistan & Newzealand. Srilanka failed to chase 206 & 169 against Newzealand and lost to Pakistan by 8 wickets scoring only 189. In the following year 1997, Srilanka performed well in the ODIs winning 3 trophies including Asia cup. But couldn't win a single away ODI series or test series, rather lost to Newzealand & West Indies. This video in which you have commented was from a 4 nation trophy where Srilanka miserably lost to South Africa twice including the final. Now, come to 1998. Srilanka failed to qualify for the final of triangular series in SA, involving Pakistan and South Africa. SL were all out for 105 runs against SA and for 139 runs against Pakistan and lost by big mergins. Lost the test series 0-2 to SA, lost the Nidahas trophy final to India chasing 307. Later in Nov 1998, SL failed to qualify for the final of a triangular series in Sharjah Involving IND & ZIM !!! Losing all 4 matches against IND and ZIM. In the second meeting against IND in group stage SL were all out for 98 runs chasing 181 runs!!! SL failed to reach the final of a triangular series in AUS in Jan-Feb 1999 involving AUS and ENG losing 7 out of 10 matches. In a match against England, SL were all out for just 99 runs chasing only 227!!! SL failed to reach the final of a triangular involving PAK and IND in March 1999, lost both matches against IND and one to PAK. SL were knocked out from the first round of the 1999 world cup in England . Though SL won the Aiwa cup in Aug-1999 but lost 3 out 5 matches failed to chase 211 & 241 against AUS & 271 against IND. In Oct 1999 SL lost the Sharjah triangular series final to PAK. Out of 3 games against PAK, SL lost 2 matches & one was tied. Chasing 196 SL were all out for 196, chasing 239, SL were all out for 121 and in the final chasing 211 SL were all out for 123 runs!!! So, in the period 1995 to 1999 except 3-4 matches I can't really see SL took Pakistan bowlers to cleaners or dominated anywhere except a few occasions in the Sub-continent.. So, you should come out of your fantasized and biased interpretation of how the SL team performed in the period 1995-1999
Many would say Jayasurya is a dangerous batsmen but i think it is Aravinda. With Jayasurya, you get to see big shots but most of them are ariel and many a times will result in a wickets but Aravinda, slow and steady, aggressive when required. Impossible to get him out once he gets sets in.
Both Sanath jaysurya and Arvind desilva are evergreen great batsman in cricket world......both partnership are great......very dangerous batsman 🙏🙏......N K YADAV
For Jayasuriya the field ""must have been 5metres more on all sides""!!!!!!!!!because he batted with "four hand's power" hitting above fielders, not letting to take catches!!!!!!!just as rules changed for Muralitharan ,for Jayasuriya also rules should have changed ,as I suggested!!!!!!!!!??????,😋😜😋😂😂
I'm a left handed batsman... And I used to bat like jaysurya... Though don't forget we had at that time ganguly and then yuvi evn thgh ppl of my reguon call me jaysurya... That was the Impact of that srilankan Team... And my father told me after sir Sunil Gavaskar.... I saw arvinda desilva batting and can't tell u How I fascinate to watch this legend.... Seriously miss that aura of lankan Cricket now a days... I wish for the best as soon as possible.... Love from India ❤

THATS IT! SUNNY is who Aravinda reminds me of. I was thinking for the longest time Aravinda's style is hard to categorise like "he pays like Sachin or Ponting or Sanga etc". Sunny Gavaskar is spot on. They both start and look unassuming but once the show starts the other team might as well go home.
Quad or tri series, colourful baggie kits with same design for a each team, open face head gears, glorious moustaches, cars and motor bikes for man of the series and man of the match, Spectators running in to the ground at end, beers in the pavilion, no IPL.. those were the greatest times of the sport of cricket
One among the greatest Chase of All Time. Especially during in 90's. Watched this In Live, and it was and still a goosebumps while watching as a Fan of Predator Sanath Jayasuriya and Legendary P.A.De.Silva.💪💪💪
I still dont understand why both these greats averaged so low in ODIS. Jayasuriya around only 28-29 and De silva 34. Jayasuriya should have averaged well over 40 and Desliva near 50 the way they played
two of the most strongest pillars of the 90's SL team....Well the saddest part is that all the players, the umpires, the crowd, the age, the individuals will not come back.
Greetings from ALBERT though I am an Indian, my favourite player is sanath jeyasurya bcz he's phenomenal top player. He was a hard hitting entertainer while he was on the crease . I am sure no one is going to hold his place in international cricket. As for India my lovable favourite player is virendher shewaq he is very daring and consisting run getter very good entertainer he always played for India winning not for his own record that is his best quality. I love Indian legend and srilankan legend.
Hw quickly time changed I m a mad frnd f srilanka cricket team,nd blind supporter of Jayasuriya but those memories are very hard to see now a days ,I m very sad ,the standard what aravimda , Jayasuriya set for srilanka now they are not able do 10% f that although I m from India but I want to c srilanka cricket as World class team everytime
Why these two coach SLteam to rise to their 1990s glory ,,evrrybowlee had nightmares about sanath ,de Silva,Ranatunga,Attapattu',sangakkara,,,....among bowlers Vaas',muralitharan,,sanath,Fernando,malinga....,,,,,,why can not SL unable to redefine itself for today's conditions.........or these legends not helping their own erstwhile team???........
I watched that whole series live on TV. During Jaya and DSilve partnership, there was complete silence and it was like they both playing against a club cricket bowlers.
Of 19 tournaments across ODI and T20 formats, Australia's men's team have reached the final nine times - the most by any team and three more than the next best Sri Lanka (came finals 6 times) Srilanka was the best t20 team ,in the world where they ranked number one more than 32 months and reached t20 finals in three times.and In oneday worldcups srilanka came 3 times final and win 1996 worldcup oneday and 2014 t20 worldcup(2007,2009,2011,2012 runnerups ) Sri Lanka has a rich cricketing history, producing countless great players that have graced the international stage. With batsmen that score heavily, bowlers that take tremendous amounts of wickets and a certain record-breaking off-spinner, the Sri Lankans have seen their fair share of world class cricketers,At that time srilanka was a best of best among other cricket nations 🇱🇰❤️❤️
One of the best memories of my child hood..arvinda dsilva was one of the class cricketer along with Sachin...this match he thrashed Pakistan like a gully team...
Sometimes I feel, arvinda desilva, while playing cover drive, his shot was very much similar to Sachin tendulkar,s cover drive, arvinda desilva was technically best ever batsman, produced by Srilanka, after desilva got retired, marvan atapattu was second best, technically after desilva !
I still dont understand why both these greats averaged so low in ODIS. Jayasuriya around only 28-29 and De silva 34. Jayasuriya should have averaged well over 40 and Desliva near 50 the way they played
Absolutely no noise from the crowd for the boundaries! Jayasuriya was the biggest terror of PAK!! He would easily reach 50 runs in 5 overs during 1996 world cup!
we use the word 'anichcha' .....nothing stays the same everything changes every moment.... west indies were unbeatable for over three decades .. enjoy the moment only without expectations that way you wont get disapointed... it's India's time now
Difference between aravinda and sachin is, aravinda was an accomplished entrepreneur before he became a cricket star and is ready to play international cricket without even much practice or staight from toilet, those who know him would agree with me, after the game he is back into his business, but tendulkar was accomplished cricketer and practice made him better.
Incredible batting. That Sri Lankan team was deadly. They changed the way one day cricket was looked at. Team full of legends.280 chased in 40 overs against that bowling attack.
look how respectful they've been at closing the game..i mean they could've smash a 6 they got overs, both over 100, have wickets. i saw teams losing match tryin to close with big shot
This was unbelievable....this was the standard of crickets in srilanka few years ago....the sad part is that no one is ever able to breake their records....and humble enough to learn from those legends....poor srilankan cricket now
Nobody gets risks jump out and try to hitting over the fence to great saqlain mistake.but matera Mular always done that.wonderful period of old cricket
I remember the series. I watched these matches live even though India was not playing. Sri Lanka and South Africa were the unbeatable heavyweights in those days. SL had this threatening batting lineup, whereas SA had dangerous pace attack (along with some good batsmen). Quite surprisingly in subcontinent conditions, South Africa defeated SL twice in the series - in the match next to this match, and also in the finals. Cronje was an experienced captained who knew how to martial his resources well. But both those matches were a treat to watch.
when we were little kids our teachers used to talk of the mighty West Indian teams of the early eighties..Now we spend time telling our kids the of the same story but from a different country -Srilanka Lions of the late 90s.
he came in a situation when iCC was not offering test matches to sl. When he was in brightest form he hasnt got many matches to ply.even sanath says that he was the greatest batsman for ever .
If one looks carefully, we will notice that the stands of Jayasuriya was very different those days. It helped him in generating the power for each of his famous pulls and hooks.
