I know Elliot personally. Hard worker, very humble, and has always been playing very groovy and innovative stuff since his teens. See if y’all can get ahold of recordings of his old band Spooge. I’m still trying to wrap my head around what he was doing with them at the age of, like, 16. Car Bomb is truly next level shit. Oh, and good on the Zappa mention- Elliot introduced me to Colaiuta...

The "Zappa as metal" comparison has floated around for years with these guys and bands like Dillinger Escape Plan. Honestly, Mr. Bungle was the gateway drug into this kind of stuff for me.

Elliot can write a transcription of this, or any other song by any drummer, in a matter of minutes. He's insane.

Elliot Hoffman is an absolute master of time. Visit his channel and watch some of his jams over sequence. Mind-blowing for any fan of counting.

Elliot Hoffman is a complete beast and Carbomb are the top of the heap in their genre. I always say Elliot is the "best drummer you've likely never heard of".

Yo, just wanted to add: It's not a sound box making the laser beam sounds, it's the guitarist. These guys are such a spectacular band. As a musician as well, their live performances are just terrifyingly on point.

Remembering techy prog stuff for me is about breaking down sections into subparts and just kinda being aware of what the whole band is playing during the part in question. I don't claim to be able to learn/play a Car Bomb song (yet) but repeated listens is a must for stuff with seemingly random progression of time signatures/syncopations. Eventually the song drills itself into memory.

Please have a look at "Archspire's Spencer Prewett Drum Playthrough". He's incredibly fast and technical! The song he plays is called "Lucid Collective Somnambulation".

I saw them live as a support act for Animals as Leaders (with Matt Garstka). I didn't know them before and it was kinda irritating, because everytime you found the current rhythm, the rhythm changed xD Headbangig to this simply isn't possible ^^ The first support act before Car Bomb was Unprocessed, a relatively unknown german metal band. Their drummer was also quite good and has some playthroughs on youtube, if you want to check it out ;)

I read a description once that their rhythms are based on Byzantine math. With some of the research I did for Music History I, there is definitely some similarities.

@1:19 learn some classical music. I played trumpet through college, and while we used stands for sheet music, I wasn't reading the music there on the spot, I had it all memorized, but simply used the sheet music there for cues. Playing metal is the same. The sign to go to the next phrase isn't the form, or the turn, its the exact phrase. This phrase leads to that phrase leads to the next phrase. It's like memorizing lines for a play. There's a "breathing" to the music, just like breathing in real life is arhythmic and uneven, it isn't precise, it flows from one breath to the next.

Yeah dude. Car Bomb does that weird speed thing better than any other band. They put that odd lilt in a lot of their songs. What trips me out is that they all do it at the same time and the same speed. Hoffman doing it with his feet just blows my mind.

Right on!!!! Car Bomb is one of my favorite out there bands. Elliot is a beast, and everyone else is just spot on tight and super mathy. Totally loved watching this reaction. New album Mordial came out yesterday and it's just as amazing as ever.

I went to see MESHUGGAH in Paris during this tour. I was just on the side with a perfect view on the drummer. Damn I was blown the f*** out by this dude. He's a machine. Pure insanity. I never saw anything like that, and I'm a huge prog listener. This guy is GOD TIER.
