With the engine for our 1971 Super Beetle project started and through its initial break in run, we can take a quick look inside the valve covers, fix some minor issues and then continue breaking in the engine. While the engine is running we’ll tune the 38EGAS carburetor for the larger 1800cc displacement and after we’ve run the engine for another 15 minutes, we’ll drain the oil, check the valve adjustment and call it a day! This is a Chinese made, EMPI 38EGAS carburetor. It can be used on a 1600 engine, certainly. We had to install larger jets in our carburetor because the carb comes set up 1600. It can be tuned to offer a good balance of performance and economy. Whether or not the carb uses more fuel is dependent on how you drive. A friend of mine and I had more or less identical motorcycles, other than my engine and carburetor which was more or less a race set up. We filled up one afternoon and went for a ride. We rode together for a few hours and at the end of the ride, filled up again. I used LESS gas on my race engine. Why? Because I didn't need to use as much throttle to keep up with my friend's bike. So, I used less fuel as I had more available power where as his bike had to work harder and use more fuel to go through the same ride. The EMPI 38EGAS carburetor is an excellent set up, we have no experience with other manufacturers carburetors.

Where would you guys recommend getting jets from the UK? currently using a standard solex 31 pict 3 on a 1641 high compression heads and engle 110 cam. She runs okay but think it might be better to re-jet in
