Work on Nathan's 1972 Baja Bug build continues with tearing down the seized up engine. Time hasn't been kind to the engine, especially with it being open to the elements as the carburetor, spark plugs and valve covers had been removed. Sam and Nate started out hopeful that the engine would eventually "free up" once the cylinder heads and cylinders were pulled off. The more they removed though, the more they found that the engine would need to be completely disassembled. So, enjoy the process of a father guiding his son in disassembling a 30 year seized VW engine and more discussion about Nathan's Baja Bug and the advantages of the metric system! This is a long video, and pretty much just for entertainment's sake since nothing comes of it but a whole bunch of parts. Enjoy, or stay tuned for the next one!

I’m an avid watcher. I also am starting on my first Baja, this is great learning for me as well. The father / son build is something I have wanted to do with my son, but things just didn’t work out and he now lives in Georgia and I in Washington St. I would like to add one thing, I’m a little concerned about your son’s choice of footwear in the shop. Keep up the great work. Thanks

You and me both, I hate that he wears them, EVERYWHERE! I can't say I always wear the best footwear, and there are moments where you might see me wearing sandals in the garage though too so I can't scold him too much. Good luck on your Baja build!

Great video! I've never fully disassembled a case, only done a bottom end rebuild. But it looks fun and interesting. Look forward to seeing what you decide to do.

Sam and Nathan, great job on the engine disassembly. I am glad Sam that you're teaching your son the ethic of: Never force anything, get a bigger hammer. If it breaks, it needed fixing anyway!

Haha, I just got done telling a co-worker "Beat it with a hammer, either it won't and you get your frustration out, or it will work and you've fixed it." That is why a hammer is my favorite tool!

Your case teardown looked to have required much less PB Blast than mine did.

What machine shop do you use?

I haven't yet in AZ, but have heard good things about Donson Performance / Don's Bus Box so that's where I'll be taking this case. Back in CA, I used Headflow Masters.

Donson's Performance / Don's Bus Box is local to me so I'll be taking the case there. I've heard good things about them from multiple people.

@@Sam_Mebane Thanks. I saw the "Oceanside, CA" on your Jbugs shirt so guessed you were local to me and Jbugs.

@@Sam_Mebane I never used him but saw many folk's statments. I went to the website and called both numbers for over a week. One number the answering machine would pick up and take a message the other was disconnected. I left message but not return call. I am in Fallbrook and so just drove down. I was unable to find him or a sign. I did find the addressed building but nothing there. I wanted my stock heads worked (DP). Thanks again for responding!

@@benkanobe7500 Adrian can be hard to get ahold of....I hear ya. I lived in Temecula and worked at our warehouse in Oceanside. Even then getting over to his shop was a trip and very hit and miss. He does great work, when you can catch him at work!
