In this third "Master Class" written by Madeline Bayless and presented by Linda Tolman, little-known details are revealed of the funeral of 1930s movie star Jeanette MacDonald. MacDonald died on January 14, 1965 and her death made front page headlines in newspapers worldwide. Thousands of loyal fans attended her funeral four days later at Forest Lawn Glendale. Despite her supposedly loving last words to her husband Gene Raymond, many fan were curious to note that her grief-stricken co-star Nelson Eddy sat privately with the family and in particular with Jeanette's older sister and confidant Blossom Rock. (Note: in the funeral service and on Jeanette's crypt her birthdate was incorrectly noted as 1907 rather than 1903.) For more information and to see actual funeral footage of Nelson Eddy arriving...and being the last one to leave the church, visit maceddy.com/nelson-eddy-most-m....

What a lovely tribute to their undying devotion for one another! This really explains so much that, possibly even till now, has only been whispered of. How many Hollywood tales were "forbidden" by the likes of Louis B. Mayer, among others? In those days the studios ruled, and ran the life of any performer! Also, "careers" meant everything! Based on this clip, they could have both renounced the studio system and just married. Today, we've the likes of the Kardashians...you know the rest!

In the early 70s I was working in the Alabama Attorney General's office and rented a room in a beautiful old home in Montgomery.. The room had been the room of the owner's daughter who was a teenager in the 30s and 40s. I found a huge scrapbook under the bed devoted entirely to Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy. Since I live in Dothan, Alabama, it was interesting to see in it a press photo of Jeanette's wedding, the wedding party included Dothan native Johnny Mack Brown and his wife. I was greatly amused by one item. This thirties teenager had pasted an article of an interview Nelson Eddy had given. In it he told the interviewer," I don't think I am that great a singer or very handsome. The girl had written in the margin," Oh come now Nelson."

Translation (hopefully accurate): "Nelson Eddy! that's an extraordinary voice!! At the age of 14, I saw him for the first time in the film Spring Days (ie,"Maytime"), I looked for him for a long time. Finally, I found his coordinates and wrote. And I received an answer, a photo with a caption!! It was a great joy. And later I received photos from him two more times! We were all in love with him. We watched the films ten times. We knew them by heart. If you haven't seen his films, be sure to find them. ,, etc. favorite. movie. Muslim Magomayev. ,, Rose Marie ,,!!!!! "

Nelson was last because he wanted his welling emotions to be shared with her corpse, alone, unseen, undisturbed, She was his greatest friend. His life revolved around this woman.

According to letters from the 1940s, she had 7 psychiatrists ready to testify in court about her emotional problems, thus stopping Nelson from being able to instigate a divorce himself.

A little bit on the overdone side. And a lot of hearts and flowers. What everybody keeps forgetting is that the two of them were married. And if they wanted to be married to each other they should have done so years before. I understand the studio system and they wouldn't let them do it. But what about after their career on the screen. If they truly weren't happy with the people that were married to, they could have been divorced and married each other.
@maceddy
@maceddy Год назад
Sometimes celebrities trap themselves into situations from which they can't easily extricate themselves. In Nelson's case, in the post-Hollywood years, his wife agreed to a divorce BUT wanted all of Nelson's money and future earnings. Plus the deal breaker was that she would trash Jeanette to the press as a homewrecker and tramp. Nelson was from childhood scarred when, in his childhood, his parents divorced due to the abusive/alcoholic father walking out on them. At school, Nelson got into fights with kids who taunted him and called his mother a whore. Nelson understood the fallout against Jeanette that would likely sink her career, her angelic image and supposed blissful marriage to Gene Raymond. The fans who bought into the PR version of her life would surely turn against her as evidenced by some even today who ignore any documentation proving otherwise.

The PR version that both of them fostered and promoted did little to change. In there lifetimes remember. I know it was a different time but honestly.

I struggled to listen to this not because of its validity but why is it necessary?
@maceddy
@maceddy 2 года назад
Because Nelson is caught off-guard and speaks candidly without thinking of consequences. His interview the next day is much more practiced and smooth, talking about how he and his wife were friends with Jeanette and Gene, etc. Here, he hesitates before discussing what he can say "for public consumption." There's a tinge of bitterness in his voice. Then he gushes about how beautiful she was when he first met her, so much that he couldn't even speak. And his stumbling at the end about the incredulousness of having to give "a statement." One doesn't give "a statement" about the woman who he privately called his wife for decades. His reaction in this interview is quote different than any you would hear from someone who co-starred in some movies together many years ago. There's nothing fake about his confusion and reaction. The reporters that night sat talking to him most of the night; one commented that they were afraid to leave him alone. This is not your typical paparazzi reaction.

It's necessary cause so many of us who are fans of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy want to know the love that they both shared. Their story make me happy and cry. I'm happy for the movies they made together and it gives me great joy to know that they loved each other off screen. I cry because their love for each other was stolen from them. I love these two people even though they are long gone. I want to know as much as I can about them. I fell in love when I watch the marathon of their movies on TCM, July 15th, 2021. I watch one or two movies each day since July 15th. As, I watched Maytime over and over I realize that I had came across this movie in the past; however, at the time I didn't realize the value. Now, in my Mid 50's and watching all 8 movies on July 15th, I see how special and valuable these two amazing people were. I'm in LOVE with MacEddy!
