This is how I built a platform for my 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4-door.
GOALS:
1. create biggest bed possible - 71x54"
2. foldable into the trunk, so you can still use the back seat
3. possible Ito build with basic tools and basic materials by basic bros
4. removable without damaging the Jeep (hopefully)
MATERIALS:
-4x8' plywood, 3/4" thick
-5x 8' 2x4 studs
-2x 48" piano hinges and hardware
-lots of 2.25" wood screws
-many 1.25" wood screws
-d rings & hardware
-small turnbuckle screws (I used 1/4" x 7.25" -- shorter is better, but check the weight capacity)
-1/4" x 2.25" bolts
-1/4" t-nuts
TOOLS:
-circular saw
-some sort of sawhorse (I used a palette)
-drill
-jigsaw
-square
-mini ratchet (to secure and remove the leg on section 2)
