The JL got the factory steering box upgrade today and I wanted to do a video with my impressions of it. If you are having excessive steering play in your steering wheel, go see your dealer and reference TSB 08-074-20.

Update. Had a new steering box installed on 2019 JL sahara. New steering box was worse but it turned out to be a bad replacement box. Just got it back today and all the play is gone . Feels tight and responsive. Cant believe I drove an entire year with all the play. Jeep needs to be do a recall. .

I was the first at my dealer. I printed out the TSB and highlighted the key issues. I drive the JT. Took 2 days to get the parts in. They were a little reluctant about it at first, but after taking it for a test drive they agreed it needed the new parts. The didn't even mention my lift and tires. The steering is very much improved. Very pleased. Took about 3.5 hours to install.

I had the TSB done this week. It drives like a whole new Jeep, what a difference. Thanks for posting this video, it made me aware of the fix.

Glad I found this video. I have had the wobble problem since I bought my 2019 JL in May of 2019. When I took it in for the steering stabilizer recall they didn't seem to believe me I had the wobble problem. Starting in December 2021 it would wobble severely, every day. They replaced the stabilizer again. It didn't fix it, just wobbled different. They then replaced the track bar. The wobble didn't completely go away. They convinced me I was the problem, so I have been putting up with it for another two years. It is now getting worse and I need to do something about it. I just learned about the gearbox problem. Can't believe the dealer hid this from me.

I just had my 2020 JLU Rubicon fixed. I initially I thought that the wander was because of my M/S tires, my 2016 JKU did not wander. After watching this I found TSB 08-074-20 and the newer TSB 08-003-21. I took it to my local dealer and described the “wandering” and I did notice that it was worse when it was hot outside. They did not want me to provide the TSB numbers but they were aware that I knew about them. The fix was 100% covered by warranty. One day wait for parts, 1/2 day in the shop, new gear box, updated software, alignment. It drives much better now! Much tighter at low speed, no more steering wheel slop, I can keep it straight in the lane now.

Just saw this as I was waiting at my dealership for this gearbox to be replaced. Your review is spot on! I have a 2019 JLU Rubicon lifted on 38” Milestar Patagonia tires and I have always had a lot of play in the steering. I have also upgraded the trackbar, steering stabilizer and drag link, all helped a little, but the play always remained. Now the steering is tight and I would recommend getting this done. Definitely a big difference.

I was in for an oil chance this morning and mentioned the wandering. It’s crazy windy today and I felt like I was in the other lane before I could catch the steering this morning. I’ve written it off for a long time but I have no lift and it was just as bad with stock tires. They found the TSB and scheduled me for this week. I’ve loved everything else about my JL so hopefully this makes it even better.

Thanks so much. Just got mine back from the dealer with the new steering box gears installed. WOW whole new vehicle. So much easier to drive. Thank you so much for showing me this solution. It has been driving me nuts since I got my Jeep. Everyone needs to do this.

I bought a 2020 Wrangler JL about a month ago and noticed the loose steering. After viewing a lot of RU-vid videos, I expected the worst. I took it into my local dealer on Nov 1 2021, just to see what they would say. They told me about the Tech Bulletin for the steering box. They had a new one in stock, and they replaced it that day. I was also happy to see that it was under warranty.

Thank you very much for this video, very informative and motivating to schedule the service. My appointment is next week, hoping I notice the improvement. Service department seemed very aware of the problem and only asked if I had a lift performed, which I didn't, only added a Falcon 2.2 stabilizer as a band aid.

Our JT had 5he same problem,very scary,our JK never had a problem. We brought our JT accessories to be added a week after buying her and the dealer did it on their own! A total world of difference!

I’ve been experiencing some intermittent “death wobble” on my 21 Willys JLU when I’ve hit some minor bumps in the road. Definitely going to look into getting upgraded

Thank you for posting. I test drove 2 Wranglers and 2 Gladiators. I even went back and reset the tire pressures. Ended up getting a Grand Cherokee 4x4 with All Weather Trails pkg. Too much rack and pinion has crept into my life?? But I still want a Wrangler. Rented a Sahara in Denver 2.0L T. Liked it. Oh yeah, the Service Managers know about this. They will swap the box out. Glad to know yours worked! I may order a new Wrangler in Feb. I subbed!👍👍😎🇺🇸

I went back to the Jeep dealer yesterday after getting a diagnosis for the steering issue TSB two weeks ago for my Gladiator. I got the new steering gearbox! It does drive much better. It’s like driving a new truck! Ha ha ha

Did you get it done? I have the Synergy sector brace as well. Didn’t know if they would do it with that installed or do I need to take it off before they change out the steering box. Please let me know. Thanks. I have a JT as well.

My local dealer just ordered the new box. Looking forward to a safer ride on the highway. Anything over 50 is an adrenalin rush. I've also had the jeep veer randomly while coming to a stop on two occasions, saw the dealer after that. Otherwise its been a fun and useful vehicle!

Just got the steering box changed (March 2022) on my 2020. No more wander and steering wheel feels tighter when turning. A definite plus for me.

I have a 2021 JLU rubicon. Have this same issue but sb only covers 18-20 models. Mine was built in 08/20

New TSB # 08 003 021 I was comparing parts required from TSB 08 003 021 new TSB number I guess. TSB (Jan 9, 2021) states Gear, steering 685 075 569 AA my invoice from the dealer is 685 075 569 AB. So I guess there is another updated TSB? So back in the shop Monday. Track bar had to be ordered and software will be applied. Kind of concerned that I had to push the issue.

I called my dealership and they were supposed to order me the steel steering box because my 2020 gladiator rubicon steering is going from side to side while driving. My warranty should cover the new steering box.

Had mine done approximately the same timeframe as you here in Tampa. My Gladiator Rubicon steers quite a bit better now. My only complaint was that it took 3 days for the dealer to complete the repair since according to the tech, the bolts didn't come with the steering box. But hey, it was free and I can comfortably steer with one hand even in heavy wind.

Unfortunately mine is a 2018 and I cancelled the dealership's warranty long time ago to save $5k. It doesn't look like a complicated install.

Unfortunately for us, we are out of warranty and our 3.6L engine just destroyed itself. A $5000 warranty would have been well worth the price right now.

I feel like all JL have this loose steering some more than others. That 2" play at the start of the video is kind of what i have i feel that i could live with it since i am a truck driver and loose steering is the norm. But really for how much i paid i should get the best steering i could get. I will wait until the smoke clears and get in line.

It certainly isn't "all JLs" as I have seen some that were really good, but it is a pretty significant problem for sure.

It needs to be under the original factory warranty for there to be no cost. So as long as you have less than 36,000 miles on it, you shouldn’t have an issue.

newer JL's and JTs don't have the problem because FCA redesigned the stirring box. After getting lots of complaints. So the 2021s shouldn't have the problem...I hope.

I have a 2020 JT 1500 miles and I have the problem. Parts on order. Be patient it takes a while to get parts in. I think Chrysler doing its hardest to keep from recalling

AE and everything below are still the aluminum version, this is a new part number with last 2 digits in AA.

I went to my dealer and they are going to change the steering box, I have installed the synergy sector shaft brace, I just need to remove it before they do the upgrade, not sure how long is going to take to get the new part and it can take up to 2/3 months

When you bring your jeep at dealer service to get your new steering gear box, jeep dealer give you any problem since your jeep is lifted also did you instal synergy track bar brace bracket?

I’m pissed… I have a 2021 JT… I have been experiencing gear box issues… called the dealer they can’t get to it until I’m done with my trip… just pissed that jeep I mean stallantis didn’t just install The steel box to begin with…!!!

Man I knew I wasn’t crazy, i have wandering on my 2019 JLUR and also have play on my steering. It’s a used Jeep with 17k miles so my dealership should cover it and when they do if my vehicle has to stay with them should they give me a loaner for the time being ?

Not all dealers supply loaners. The job only takes a few hours, so you shouldn't be down for long.

Took mine to a dealer in Atlanta. They refused to change box. Say Jeep does not support swap of boxes in 2020 wrangler. Changed a gear in the box. Worthless still terrible sway at speeds. This has to be a major safety issue. My daughter drives the vehicle and I am worried about her safety.

The absolutely should replace them in 2020 models! They are supposed to do it without question. Go to another dealer.

What kind of lift do you have? I have a Teraflex lift with 37’ toyo tires and the dealership just won’t do it for me, because of “my lift” is apparently causing the problem.

Mopar lift with some Metalcloak and Rough Country parts. Call Jeep Cares, the dealer cannot deny you because of the lift.

Why hasn't Jeep fixed this steering problem. Your paying out the ass for a Jeep,the problem should be fixed from the factory. This is one of the issues that keeps me buying a Wrangler.

they did fix it. they replaced the steering box on older ones and then new ones had the upgraded steering box. Not sure what you mean by "why hasn't Jeep fixed it" as they actually did.
