Brother I like that you let us see you actually physically turning the bolts I can't stand the videos where they tell you what they're going to do and then they cut and when they come back the transmission sitting on the ground it helps so much to see which angles that you are attacking it from as well as how you're getting by without things most of us don't have a mechanic shop at Bay and I'm watching you work with what you have is legit I'm going to do my TJ clutch this Friday in confidence thanks bro

I’ve got a ‘98 TJ with a 4.0L soft-top and I drove it from Huntington Beach, CA to Denver, CO which was not fun. No cruise control, the gauges stopped working the day before I left and before I spent any time learning how to fix stuff on it. But I noticed when it got hot, the clutch was jumpy like you described. I thought it was either oil or coolant that got in there. My son and I will take it apart and inspect the clutch and flywheel. Thanks for the video and inspiration.

Painful mistake, but incredible job. I can't believe you did that in one day by yourself with a car jack. People should know that this is not as easy, or as clean, as you made it look. Def not your first clutch job. Those dowel runners are a great little trick. I replaced all of mine a few years ago with a Luk clutch kit and it does not shimmy. I did mine ('99 2.5) with a buddy and we couldn't get the clutch to engage for a reason that is still a mystery to us. We had that tranny case up and down probably a dozen times or more over a couple weeks. Only worked when I replaced the flywheel with pilot bearing, which really shouldn't have been the reason. Never want to go through that again.
@ForceBuilt
@ForceBuilt Год назад
Thanks Nathan! Yeah, it wasn't as easy as it looks for sure. I was planning on 2 days but got it done in one. The dowels worked great! If I do it again, I will go with a Luk clutch for sure. I been hearing too much good about it. Sadly this did not eliminate my issue. Thanks for watching!
@connor3288
@connor3288 7 месяцев назад
Couldnt get the clutch to engage? Do you mean disengage? If a pilot bearing is really bad, it can drag when you depress the clutch pedal, which will make the input shaft not fully independent of engine torque. This will act like a dragging/not disengaging clutch.
@SeriouslyAwesome
@SeriouslyAwesome 7 месяцев назад
@@connor3288disengage, correct. It could very well have been the pilot bearing, but I'm not sure how. Hard to remember, and we went through so many variations troubleshooting, but I definitely had a new pilot bearing, which in there now. My guess was that maybe when it was seated in the old flywheel I'd put it in too deep or shallow. When I got the new flywheel the seating was more appropriate. Who knows. The whole mess was a confounding mystery and a royal pain.
@connor3288
@connor3288 7 месяцев назад
@@SeriouslyAwesome The depth wouldn't matter as far as having clutch issues. All the pilot bearing does is support input shaft and allow for difference in rotation speed for engine and input shaft. The input shaft just slides inside so precise depth isn't critical. Obviously you want to have it well seated and seated evenly in place though.
@SeriouslyAwesome
@SeriouslyAwesome 7 месяцев назад
@@connor3288this is the depth of the mystery. We have no idea why it didn't work, but it finally did with a last ditch swap of the fly wheel (and P.B.)

My 97 2.5 does the same thing the oil pan gasket was leaking a little on mine thougt that was the cause of it .But it still does it from time to time especially when in reverse.

check trans and transfer case fluids diff fluids and all u joints. i am changing my clutch had same problems. i found front axle u joints bad. check breaks if breaks lot letting go completely could cause shaking when starting from stop i have to change the soft lines to front breaks. wheels do not roll like they should . if it hard to put into gear it is clutch or hydraulic master cylinder

Just thinking here... How much lift do you have? All Jeeps are a little different but generally, going past two inches lift without a slip yoke eliminator can cause vibrations and "chatter" like feelings. I have two inch lift springs in mine and I'm right at the verge of chatter. I can feel just a tiny bit when I let the clutch up. One thing I did to put the pinion angle closer to correct was to install front axle caster adjustment bolts in the rear. You should find that there are slotted adjustment holes back there (for the lower control arms) but that the factory put plain "straight" bolts in. If you put the front cam (offset washer head) bolts in there you can get a few more degrees of pinion angle adjustment and it might help. On mine it did. Remember, though... All Jeeps are a little different. The dynamics of all the suspension and driveline parts add up to slightly different results from Jeep to Jeep.

Thanks for the information. I did end up getting this resolved with a LUK Clutch kit. It is smooth a silk now. Thanks for taking the time to comment and add value to the comment section!

Could it be that the clutch fork ball retainer clip was missing or worn? I think I read somewhere that those go bad and cause chatter.

Outstanding. Could I get the size of those dowels again?
@ForceBuilt
@ForceBuilt 11 месяцев назад
I used 7/16-16 from tractor supply. Just get the longest ones they have. That is not the actual thread size but it works plenty good enough. I ended up changing my clutch again after this video with a LUK Clutch and Flywheel. The one in this video produced chatter. The LUK is roughly the same price and is the original manufacturer equipment. I recommend LUK. Thanks for watching!

I’m about to do my 2.5, 130k miles, this way, was about to try without knowing your dowel trick so might try that! Saw this guys video about clutch chatter, and long story short looks like he swears by the luk brand clutch. I don’t see how it would make that much difference but definitely going to go with a luk. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UFtOnvP_3GY.html
