In this video we show a simple problem that, if over-looked, can lead to bigger problems! The negative battery terminal was able to be turned back-and-forth by hand even with the tension nut bottomed-out. Take a look and see if this helps you out!

Brother, thank you! Just had this issue with my 2017 wrangler and, like you said, cables were tight but terminal was loose on the post! Went and fixed it right after the video and I’m back in action. God bless you and yours! Hope you have an awesome day! Here’s a jeep wave from TN 👋!

Bro you TOTALLY just saved my ass man! This has been driving me NUTS for the last week. I KNEW there was something special about that connector & it being oval. The 10mm I have on there is just a regular nut; doesn’t have that countersink & clearly that’s a big deal… thanks again Jeep for totally unnecessarily over-engineering the hell outta something that’s worked just fine for over a century 🙄🙄🙄 thanks so much bro. Like you said, “you never know who’s watching…” thanks so much 🙏🙏🙏

You wouldn’t happen to have/know the part number for that specific but would you? I think Advance Auto/something of the like will have it fairly easily. 👊

@@dfro6496 glad the video was a big help. I actually have not been able to locate just those individual parts. My understanding is that the stealership has a nice expensive complete assembly ready to be purchased. :( One thing you could try is hitting the salvage yard. You should be able to pick one up super cheap there! Good luck! -Dutch

Awesome video most people forget about the simple things! I was always taught stupidest things first before you spend unnecessary money and this video was gold! All I had to do was take a fly screwdriver and a little mallet and tap lightly to see it properly on top of the post and it smell perfectly. Thanks for the great video.

Thanks for video! Mine was loose bc previous owner had put negative winch terminal over this so there was no longer a tightening action happening. I was able to take the sliding tab off and put the negative winch terminal under it. Now it tightens perfectly!

Mission accomplished, saved us a dealer trip. We were using the green/red felt terminal protectors. Just enough space to cause a problem although the terminals appeared to be connected. Didn’t know about the taper design. Thanks again!

You just saved me too! I had a loose negative lead and couldn't figure out why--after I saw your video I realized the felt pad underneath was lifting the lead enough so it couldn't make a tight fit. Took that felt pad out, slammed the lead all the way down on the terminal, and Bob's your uncle! Thanks so much for explaining this to us!

Wow... sometimes going back to basics is all you need to do! Battery basics 101 I completely overlooked and didn't even think about trying! I got an aftermarket battery from O'Reilly's and the negative is as tight as it can get but I can wiggle the connection still. Wiggle hard enough and I can take off the negative clamp. Sometimes my Jeep won't start because of the loose connection. Some of my other jeep buddies said they had the same problem and had to buy alternative clamps or that little cap that slides over the negative terminal. But I'll take a look to see if I even pushed the terminal all the way down to ensure a proper seating before doing anything...so thank you for that! Even if it doesn't work it's a good reminder ✌️

Great video. My issue was that I had the red and green corrosion preventers on the terminals and that was enough to raise the bracket and cause the issue. I removed them and they tightened right up. Thank you!!

Glad you discovered your root cause! To help with the corrosion you can use dielectric grease, but just a light coating. Or you can try the red spray stuff (I forget the name), but it can end up over a wide area because of it spraying out. Thanks for watching and for sharing what you found! -Dutch

I have this exact year make and model and I'm glad I looked up some videos after talking to my neighbor who said he's done mechanic work for years and that my battery was shot. It would still startup but it was definitely loose on the terminal. It didn't occur to me to try to drop it down further over the terminal where it tapers out. There are some other videos online where they use angle grinders and reattach a whole new hook for terminal but from the looks of mine it seems in good enough shape. Thank you very much for the quality video, I hope this is enough to get me to church tomorrow morning.

Thank you for the kind words! I sincerely hope this was your root cause. Often times, the problem corrections are some of the simplest things. A loose connection can still provide enough current to start a vehicle, in the correct situations, but will potentially lead to other issues like improper charging, erroneous electrical issues (goofy acting electronics in the vehicle) and things like that. Let me know how this goes for you! -Dutch

This is a great video. I have a 2013 Jeep Wrangler JK which has been giving me an intermittent no crank condition. Looked at all kind of Jeep Forums, RU-vid videos, and also took it to the dealer. Nobody adequately solved the problem. I chased all kind of stuff including grounding issues and a possible bad shifter position sensor. The dealer tried to sell me a new battery even though the one on the Jeep tested good by my tester. The internet is loaded with complicated fixes for this intermittent no crank problem (i.e., bad engine ground, bad ECM, bad ignition switch, etc.). Fully opening and gently tapping down the terminal clamps (OEM like in the video, used a large ratchet socket) to full seat and retightening did the trick (Note: I did a second snug after the engine compartment was hot.). Thanks Dutchman. Problem solved. Cost $0.00. Lesson: START SIMPLE!!!

Hello and thank you for the feedback! I am not sure about always, but there certainly is the possibility especially if the battery post has been compromised in some way e.g. wire brushed to remove corrosion, but that also removes post material. All in all I think we can agree on at least one thing...it is overall a pretty poor design that causes a lot of people grief! Thanks for watching the video and for the comment. -Dutch

When it doesn’t go all the way down, but is still attached below the very top, why does it make a difference? And isn’t the felt rings keeping the terminals from going all the way down? I’m learning.
@dutchmenmodsandrepairs1427
@dutchmenmodsandrepairs1427 8 месяцев назад
Hello and thank you for watching the video! The felt tabs are supposed to help with preventing corrosion. IMHO they are hit or miss. They tend to work better with older batteries that aren't/weren't as sealed and would then leak battery "gas" at the posts which would lead to corrosion. For me it is better to use a light coating of dielectric grease or the battery terminal protector spray. It is important to have that connection all the way down. If it is higher up the post, even though it is tight now, over time and vehicle vibration from use will gradually loosen that connection and you will end up with weird electrical problems. Best to get it pushed down and then snugged up. Hope that helps! -Dutch

Hi there! Maybe I am misunderstanding your comment. The video focuses on the aspect that most of these issues are just loose connections and this particular connection uses a "special" setup i.e. sliding tensioner with a unique nut. Most people shouldn't have to replace these connections unless they have been mangled or misused. -Dutch

I'm having this issue right now as I'm typing this. When u were tightening the screw down, I saw it moving. Mine is no longer tightening like so. I mean its tightening but I can still pull the terminal right off the post. I tried a shim over the post but the terminal wont go over the shim. I think that little plate that the 'cone shaped' nut goes into is a little stripped. Is there a remedy to this (besides getting a new terminal) 😪😪

Could this potentially lead to tipm issues? My terminal has been loose but haven’t stopped to tighten and this morning the gremlins in electronics came out. Wipers wouldn’t turn off, no blinkers or headlights. I’ll be testing it tonight but do NOT want to have to replace the tipm if I don’t have to.
@dutchmenmodsandrepairs1427
@dutchmenmodsandrepairs1427 2 года назад
Hello and thank you for asking the question. There really is no way for us to know whether this is causing TIPM issues. That being said, loose ground or supply electrical connections are not good things and depending on how loose or bad the connections are, some pretty "wierd" things can go on with electrical components. Definitely check your connection and tighten it back down regardless...perhaps this will fix the problem.
@Mike__P

Somehow that clamping piece that shifts back and forth when the nut is tightened fell off my positive terminal, so now it's always loose. Every video showing how to make sure the terminals are tight assumes that this piece is still there. I have not had any luck finding this piece. I will most likely have to spend $40 to buy all new terminals.

Jeep just charged me $80 to do that. They said it won't tighten all the way as it has worn down the battery post from twisting back and forth. They were mad when I would not buy a super expensive battery from them. They told me the hit it with a hammer a couple times and retightened it but said the damage to the battery was done so it won't stay fixed long. I am hoping to find someone to put a different type of terminal connector on this negative post and fix the problem for me.

Sorry to hear about this experience, but there is a reason people refer to dealerships as "stealerships." There are ways to rig the connection, but they are temporary and can introduce air gaps that will then cause potential arcing and then corrosion issues. I hope you find someone who can do honest work for you in getting it fixed. - Dutch

I replace the battery and still do the same hard to starting the jeep and when the rpm goes up the jeep slows down losing power and has the lightning ⚡️on dash and that happens after hitting a bump on road!

Hello Jorge. It sounds to me like perhaps you have a bad ground connection somewhere? I would trace out your negative side battery connection to its ground and check the connection there, maybe even use a multimeter to check the ohms. You may want to start the Jeep up in your driveway and start wiggling cables and connectors to see if you can duplicate the problem. Best wishes.

my Mini Cooper has a loose battery connection and I know nothing about car batteries and I think this is why the car won't start half the time unless I slam some doors and then open and close the hood. Seems like slamming the car moves the loose battery connection into place and will start but only sometimes.

Hi Courtney. It definitely sounds like a loose electrical connection, whether it is the battery or other wiring associated with your ignition. I would have someone you trust and knows cars a bit to take a closer look at what is going on. If not, you'll want to take it to a reputable mechanic since this problem will more than likely get worse and could leave you stranded. Best of luck to you in getting that problem fixed!

Hi! Great video! I was wondering, the connecter that shifts with the tightening of the screw fell off my 2014 jeep. Do you know where to get a replacement? Been having trouble finding a location.

Hello Arturo. Thank you for the compliment! I am not sure you will be able to find just that one piece. It probably comes with the entire battery terminal connection. For my Jeep Grand Cherokee this (I believe) is shown as the Positive Battery Terminal Kit - Mopar (68191445AA). Diagrams from Mopar aren't always the best. You could consider going to a junk yard to see if you can rob one off another Jeep. As far as a temp patch you may be able to get away with a very small set of vise grips, but that is risky and would need to be protected and fixed in place because, in my opinion, that is taking a BIG risk. I would only do something like that in an emergency and as a last resort while getting the correct part.

Could this cause startup issues? Batter on my Jeep and in key fob are pretty good. Just left the dealer recently (where they checked some electrical components); now it doesn’t wanna start up

Hello Daryl! Thank you for watching the video and for your question. So with an issue like that it could be a number of things or a combination of things. I will try to summarize possible items you can look into. First, check you battery connections that they are tight and not corroded. Secondly, do you hear a clicking sound coming from the starter when you turn the key? This could be an issue with the starter solenoid which is responsible for closing and pushing the starter shaft out and "into" the flywheel to turn the engine (if it is "clicking" then there is power getting to the starter but either the solenoid is weak or the starter motor could be bad). If you hear nothing, then check the battery. The best way is to have it load tested at an automotive store like AutoZone or a similar place. They can load test in our out of the vehicle. If the battery checks good and the connections are good then you could have a starter relay that is bad, questionable connections at the starter itself or ground points for starter circuitry. You can google how to "jumper" the starter to verify whether the starter is good or not, but this can be a bit intimidating for some people to do. I hope these pointers are helpful and we wish you the best in getting your Jeep back on the road! - Dutch

One more thing, what electrical components did they check and why? It is usually good to go back to the last thing(s) touched. If it was working before, then it is quite possible they knocked something loose in moving things around. Just our 2 cents.

@@dutchmenmodsandrepairs1427 looks like I do have loose connections from previous repairs. Parts dealer checked; said the battery was good but needs charged. It is three years old and out of warranty, so between an older battery and loose connections, my issues may be less complex than I thought.

Hello. I am sorry to hear about your situation. One option is to go to a junk yard and take the assembly off another jeep. Another option is to redo the entire connection with an aftermarket battery connection "kit" you can pick up at one of the auto box stores. I hope this helps you out in some way. I wish I could do more. -Dutch

My jeep wouldn't start this morning. Checked battery, positive terminal is loose, I can lift it off the post with my hands, no tools needed. Problem is, I lost those damn conical cone shaped nuts when installing my winch, so I had been using regular nuts, which isn't clamping down enough on the terminal. I've tried looking for those conical nuts online but can't find any

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and glad it was able to clear some things up for you. Not sure where you live, but you could try a hardware store or depending on what kind of tools you have you may be able to file or grind (carefully) a nut the fits to add a slight conical taper to the nuts that would be enough to fix your problem. You could also check out a salvage yard for Jeeps and go there. Hope these ideas help and best of luck in fixing your issue.

@@dutchmenmodsandrepairs1427 I wound up ordering on Amazon a set of new terminals to replace the stupid jeep design. Upon further research on the forums, lots of folks have the same issue because they lose the conical shaped nuts and can't find them anywhere. Never use impact wrench on these. It will over torque and strip these out. Hand tighten only. These types of battery clamps are a bad design. I have these on my car.
