Many people say that Dennis looked ghoulish on that portrait, well so did his wife... The fact that a murder victim doesn't get to have a marked grave but the murderer does with colorful flowers on it, just goes to show that our entire world is ghoulish too.
She has a bright, sweet, somewhat traumatized look in her eyes. His eyes look evil and plotting. Cover the face and look at the eyes, they are the windows to the soul.
That's true but videos like the one Chris made serves more as a memorial as any tombstone could...it'd be hard to put all that information on any gravestone...just looking on the positive side I guess
@@micahstahl8936 family's hearts are misplaced at times, even when their family member commits murder/rape/ molestation they stand by them. The human mind is an enigma.
@@hangten1904 , I loved the "road-trip" rather than just "looking at images" etc. I know it's not always possible and it's not the same as literally being there in person but when someone takes the camera to the actual location where the audience can see/hear the sights and sounds, it offers a much more immersive experience!
sometimes families don't want the final resting place to become a shrine to the public and a place to be reminded of the horrific way her life ended. so they know where she is all that's all that matters to them. they don't want the public to easily locate her final resting place.
I love that the two Thorntons behaved as if they had NEVER seen a single horror movie in their entire lives. That's heroic in it's own right. Seriously.
@slayerduval1, that to me was one of the _scariest_ parts, is the fact that they stayed around and kept encountering him. The fact he used a gun to execute his wife & they had no idea that he could've done the same to them.
A headstone for what? A headstone does not validate her existence nor does it diminishes it. As long as her name is found written in the Book of Life, that is all that matters. I don't mind being forgotten in this evil world of ours.
@@Utubesanarc If the money used to purchased a tombstone could feed one hungry child, Marilyn would want that instead of wasting it on a vain attempt at honoring her. Her suffering is over, help those who are currently suffering as we speak.
Those old schools were like that. There are a few wood ones still around in my state. There they sit by themselves and they were so small compared to schools I went to and the modern ones. Maybe held 20 students? I dont find it creepy as much as it fascinates me how much things change so fast. Just in a few lifetimes.
That can be country life. Quiet and open spaces. But with places like that comes the idea for psychopaths that murder is easy to get away with. No cameras and few people. But I’d rather have that quiet life than city life.
This happened in my home town when I was 12 years old. She was a counselor at Coldwater Schools. My brothers and I are in the original airing of Unsolved Mysteries sitting outside our local library. Haven’t seen or thought about this for 20 years. Very sad! But great video!
That’s crazy I was born in 1990so I had no idea that the movie was based on a true story not shocked because candy man is based on a true story has well a woman was killed in Chicago the killer or killers came through her bathroom mirror like in the movie smh
This video was done really well. The presenter is so genuine, so real, his breathing gives him away of how intrigued he is about the mystery. He definitely needs to keep doing these kinds of videos.
I am from Coldwater, MI and my father was a police officer there when this happened. I have been to that school house several times as a kid, both before and after the incident. Marilyn was my high school guidance counselor. I went to school with their kids and I worked in the attendance office when this all went down. When Dennis was on the run and no one knew where he was, I remember the kids names were changed on all documentation in the school to protect them in case he came back for them. A few weeks after that day, the kids were pulled out of school all together and moved with Marilyn's family. The Monday following the day this happened, I was at the police station with my father while they had the APB out for him. This was a HUGE deal in the tiny town of 10,000 people. It still makes me cringe when I think about how all of this went down.
The beginning of Jeepers Creepers and that scary truck that was tailgating was always the scariest thing I have ever seen. Knowing that it’s true makes me even more scared.
What's with the thing where it's assumed country people are all Deliverance? I've rarely met anyone outside a major city I literally ran away from. Most will take you in, give you gas, lemonade and food and whatever else you need. It's very odd.
Ya know, it's possible that her family doesn't want people to know exactly where her grave is. I could understand them not wanting strangers to disturb her eternal slumber, even strangers who are being respectful. (His grave marker was most likely paid for and chosen by his parents, who probably also paid for his plot right next to theirs, with matching stone.)
Most states operate a crime victim's unit that helps with funeral costs or markers. a crowd fund would probably solve that issue too. sad. there may not.have been an estate of the murderer to garnish for the cost of a marker.
overnight those children were left without a mother and a father. likely ended up in fostercare. as a former foster youth I can speak to this. growing up without a family, means you age into adulthood with nothing. the fact your perspective is to blame the children for not having a headstone proves what kind of family priviledge you hold.
@steve it's really not that big of deal. Noonan is pretty common tbh. On the east coast, in the south, and some in the California area. Noonans came over during the great famine.
Like that movie " in 30 minutes or less" It's a comedy movie , but the idea was taken from a real situation where a pizza delivery kid , kidnapped strap a bomb to his neck and he actually died , RIP . God bless his soul Fax 💯
@@rongsmith4631 I think the scariest one for me was the story behind A Nightmare On Elm Street. Hmong refugees were dying in their sleep. People experienced night terrors and were afraid to sleep as they knew they would die. Something was "stalking" them.
Jeepers Creepers is one of the scariest movies I’ve seen. And I’m a huge fan of horror films so I’ve seen a bajillion. I had no idea it was loosely based on this event. My ex husband’s name is Dennis… and he’s a total creep, too.
@@slynn6167 And that’s what makes me wanna scream like a banshee whenever I think about it. Took me a few years with a good therapist to get past that. 🤮
I was 5 when this happened. My older sister was friends with one of the Depue girls. I remember all the chaos. My sister took off to go to their house to make sure her friend was ok when word started getting around via landlines. My mom was worried about my sister and trying to get her to come home and not go over to their house. I'm pretty sure he had been going psycho for quite some time. I remember something about tunnels being found under the house. It's been over 30 years and I've only had a couple conversations with my family about it. I remember when the Unsolved Mysteries story came out, my whole family (and probably everyone in town) was gathered around the TV. One of the victims in the Leonard Lake and Charles Ng killings killings was also from Coldwater, MI area. I'm pretty sure the story of Lake and Ng was the inspiration for the movie "Gothika."
Something about the ambience and music of Unsolved Mysteries combined with Robert Stack's legendary voice can take a "typical" high-pressure moment like that highway chase and turn it truly unnerving. And that's why it was the perfect inspiration for the opening of Jeepers Creepers.
This story from Unsolved Mysteries gave me nightmares as a kid, my poor mom was woken up countless nights. Not sure why I was allowed to watch that show.
A bizzare case to say the least. I could not be more relieved it was solved. Thank you to the couple who spotted the blood soaked sheets and made mention of it. Please be safe out there everyone.
"Everybody has family" Thank you for saying that... I agree completely. It's just a shame that it happens this way sometimes. A person dies and a family is left with a hole in their heart. It may be true that some people can be evil, but it doesn't mean that they aren't loved.
I don't think money is why no marker was ever placed for Marilyn. Her parents were alive and she had friends and coworkers. You can get a basic marker and not spend a lot of money. This case became famous. I suspect her family simply did not want it to become a shrine or have people damaging it. I do think the cemetery should keep better records and have good plot information. Even if they have to use a ground radar and look for a grave shaft. Besides, it's been over 30 years now. It may be time to put up a small marker.
Or, she was a POS and everyone knew it. I'm not saying that murdering someone is ok, but she could have been abusing the guy for years, and he just snapped.
@Greysen Gagne, she was a pos to her family. Dennis just snapped. No one wants to mention that. I knew them personally. I'm not saying Dennis should have killed her, but he literally snapped.
This happened in Coldwater, MI, and Mrs. Depue was my high school counselor in the mid-70s. This horrific tragedy shook the entire community. btw the road’s name is Snow Prairie Rd. Not South Prairie Rd.
one of my favourite horrors. the couple he was tailgating were truly badass for going back. that family picture is a stuff of nightmares alone. so well presented
A lot of times it's the people we least expect who are the killers: Dennis Rader the BTK KILLER He was a pillar of the community. Had a great job and was active in his church. John Gacy the Killer Clown from Chicago Entertained at kid's parties.Belonged to.various civic groups like the Jaycees;Lions Club;etal. Hired young men to work at his construction company during the summer. Also raped and killed them!! Ted Bundy.Worked at a Suicide Prevention Hotline.
My wife and I were just talking of this movie, as one of the scariest movies ever. And this gem came to my phone within minutes. Well done, now I'm really freaking out.
At its time jeepers creepers was scary...but now the creeper looks hillarious 😂 but the movie is definitly one of my faves...the other 2 sucked tho lol
I find it exceedingly creepy and unsettling that the abandoned school is all boarded up and condemned but the grass is well kept and looked after it seems.
You are really something. Whenever you cover a story, I feel like I'm right in the story. Those folks who saw that van originally were amazingly brave. My husband would have never pulled me out of the car to check out the red blanket behind the school.
They weren’t brave they were idiotic. How fucking stupid do you have to be to stop at a potential site of a murder. They are lucky they weren’t killed as well.
Wow, how ironic that he has a grave and headstone with his family with flowers on it and she is in an unmarked grave. An injustice even in death. Thanks for covering this.
Marylin was my guidance counselor. Julie was my classmate. I took piano lessons nextdoor to their home on Archer lake. Julie was never the same sadly. They were very quiet, but very kind. Supposedly, he had some secret access to the home after separating. Where the girls and Marylin arrive home, and he'd be sitting in his chair watching tv
If my family member was a murderer there's no way I would be putting flowers on their grave wow.... RIP Marilyn sorry your killer gets a memorial with flowers and you're in an unmarked grave
@@nstar1372 If it's no shit, as you put it. Why do people insist on talking to the dead who can't hear or answer? Or worse, telling them to "RIP which is absolutely nonsense! Let me guess, you do the same thing...right?
Sometimes the families of murder victims, especially high profile murders, will opt not to put a marker or headstone because of the concern that it may attract morbid "tourists" who come to visit the grave to take pictures for purposes of exploitation, or even steal things for souvenirs. (Definitely not talking about you, M.I. - your videos are great!) The same goes for families of murderers too (though obviously not every murderer).
Being related to a psycho is a horrific experience. It ruins your entire life. Careers do not last, relationships no matter how meaningful end. Living with those memories is an abyss.
As a fan of the Creeper movies, I gotta say really love learning how it was inspired by a true event that took place back then in the early 90s. Awesome work man.
You have done this video in a non-judgemental and very sensitive manner. Not knowing of the story prior to seeing your video, you conveyed the story very respectfully for those involved in the real life incident. All power to you!
I remember watching jeepers creepers years ago in my old family home, i was so terrified probably the scariest movie I've seen. Makes it more scary knowing it's a true story
One of the worst things is when someone feels strong enough to kill people yet they take the coward’s way out when it comes time to face it. He doesn’t deserve that beautiful headstone, his ex wife does
@@bobbobbob9117 “went out with a bang”??? Makes it sound like he did something good, dude. Saving the tax money I’ll agree with ya, but that hardly earns him any commemoration. He went out like a piece of shit coward, not with any bang. He went out like a bitch. As he was.
Dennis Depue always looked like a murderer. If ever there was a poster child for "I'm going to kill someone", it would certainly be him. I always thought he looked something like Frankenstein's monster with Jeffrey Dahmer eyes.
I was born and raised in coldwater michigan. I was 7 on Easter Sunday 1990 and remember the state and county cops racing down our road just a couple miles from snow Prarie and Southern road. When this happened unsolved mysteries came to our neck of the woods to film the reenactment. I've been in that old school house Halloween night 2000. There were goats running around inside. It's all locked up now but yeah I'll never forget that day.
He changes his license plate on the side of the road where anybody driving by can see him. He leaves his car door open with blood all over it. If that's not a guy that subconsciously wants to get caught I don't know who is.
As effective as Jeepers Creepers opening was, the Unsolved Mysteries episode that featured a segment on this story was TERRIFYING. Can’t believe the school still stands to this day! Great content as always :)
Yeah me to. It seems like everywhere there's a murder or crime at some home or school, some moron comes around, burns it down or tears it down.... something stupid!
LOL, I 100 percent agree! I find the actual killer's picture who killed Marilyn, far scarier than the fictional character of Jeepers Creepers. In that picture, the guy in my opinion, almost looks possessed or not even human. Just a cold soulless stare in his eyes.
Hey there! I came across your comment and I just had to reach out and say hi. Your perspective really caught my attention and I would love to get to know you better. Would you be interested in chatting sometime? Looking forward to hearing back from you! 😊

I'm not going to lie. I was initially a little turned off by the lower quality filming, but this video did not disappoint! I loved the snippets of video that would depict a more realistic image of what things might have actually looked like and you're actually a very good story teller! Top notch, bud! If Marilyn is in an unmarked grave, you should be able to find it. My father passed away in 1970 and is in an unmarked grave. My mother didn't know where, but with the information I had of my father, the cemetery was able to tell me. I visit his grave every year. Wow this is an excellent video. Such a unique style of filming on site, cutting it with other footage.. I have never seen anything like this. Very refreshing. Plus, you're a likeable person so that helps ofc
What a sad story, I watched all the Jeeper Creeper movies. Of course, the first movie is always the best. My question is why is there a school out in the middle of nowhere? Was there families living in the area & kids went there? How long was the school opened & then left abandoned? Just weird to me & eerie. Great video by the way, Chris. RIP Marilyn 💐 you are not forgotten.
Australia has lots of these abandoned schools and churches in the middle of nowhere. Communities long gone from where the industrys dried up or the farming went sour.
Omg, I just watched that spooky movie! That really is an isolated area, thank you for posting this interesting story. Stay safe and if a scary van ever follows you...go to police station.
I watched that movie, never new this happened. Very strange how someone can so-called love someone to death. This kind of behavior is now a dime a dozen. So many stories about husbands killing wives and children and women killing husbands. We live in an evil world, where anything goes. Look how many children disappear and are found dead days, weeks even years later. Very sad and sick. Thanks for the story, always enlightening.
A case you may want to do is the murder of gary Simmons in Kansas City. He owned a bunch of gas stations and was killed over a bogus horse deal. I don't think they ever found the guy they suspected. You always do a good job.
Thank you, Chris. That was very interesting. I remember seeing that on Unsolved Mysteries a long time ago. I wish they would bring that show back on. It captured quite a few bad guys and women.
It's been revived and is currently streaming on Netflix. Definitely not the same w/o Robert Stack and no reenactments but family, friends and law enforcement involved in the cases are interviewed.
@@dtice69 So dumb that they did it like that. They could've easily gotten someone with charisma to pay homage to the old format. Instead it's like every other true crime docu.

My heart goes out to Marilyn's children, family and loved ones. I hope she is resting in peace. Thank you for covering this, I had no idea at all about any of it. I'd like to say though, in regards to the grave sinking since she was buried, my Grandfather was buried in 1990 and even though he has a cement vault, his grave (as well as most in the cemetery he is buried in), has sunk significantly. The cemetery he is buried in, is really tiny and unfortunately not well taken care of. I try to go there as often as I can to clean it up, close gopher holes and take whatever care I can of it. I know too many people buried in that tiny cemetery and it breaks my heart to see the state of it whenever I go. As for unmarked graves, many of us have searched for the grave of my stepsister for years in that same cemetery and no one can find it. It's truly heartbreaking because even though I never met her, I have always wanted to pay my respects. The reason I never met her is because she passed away long before my mom and stepdad became a couple. The way she died is so tragic! She passed away on her 5th birthday when a fire broke out in the kitchen while they were sleeping, everyone got out except her because no one could get to her to save her. 💔
That old school house is so beautiful. How sad it has been stained with such sadness and horror. It needs so much love and attention. What a terrible loss. This could be something to be proud of again of the right people stepped up and did something to save and restore it and give it some happier memories and help heal a community. Very sad and a real shame. Idk why men do such awful things. It's almost just because they can ? It defies logic, sanity, so many things. Sub human. Not human.
