Bizzare ending to the fight. What a shame. Both fighters landing heavily. Zarate's left uppercuts and hooks to the body look brutal. I think had the fight continued Fenech would've had to have gone for the KO in the next couple of rounds otherwise Zarate's body attack would have overwhelmed him.
The stoppage is a joke! Fenech’s corner told the ref that the cut was due to a head-but caused by Zarate and the dumb ref agreed without taking into consideration that Fenech was the one coming in violently with his head. Fenech was a ball of energy, but Zarate was the superior technician. Had the fight continued Zarate’s quality would have eventually worn down Fenech. Fenech’s corner new this and that’s why they did what they did to have the fight stopped!
@Kedbuka I'm not sure about prime Zarate Vs Fenech. I still think Jeff could crowd and hurt him. And I think Zarate would be stronger and be able to stand up to him better. I rate Fenech's chin higher than Zamora's. Can he get through 7,8,9 rounds of warfare with Zarate? Will he revert to his boxing, as he did against Villasana at times late on? He'd have to.
@Kedbuka Zarate had come back and squashed a lot of club fighters and 'bums'. He gritted his teeth and hurt Fenech to the body after taking a shellacking from 'The Marackville Mauler'. Shame about the premature end but a good scrap leading up to it I think.
In Fenech's corner after the 4th round, the referee examined Jeff's cut. you hear one the Fenech's corner men said ,.' it was from a head butt'. The referee said...'it looks like a punch',..........the corner men repeated that it was from a butt. Then the referee went to the scorers table and told them to deduct one point from Zarate for a head butt. That means that the referee allowed Fenech's handlers to determine if the cut was from a punch or a head butt. Obviously,........that's bullshit and blatant cheating. I can prove that the referee is a liar. He was checking the head butt after the last round, and you hear him talking about it. He said it may have been from a punch but he went along with Fenech's trainer, calling it a head butt. That proves he's a liar, because he obviously wasn't sure what caused it when he went to check it after the last round. If he was uncertain about it, that means he didn't see what caused the cut when it happened. If he didn't see it happen, how in the hell can he make a decision later, saying it was a head butt? He lied, because he didn't stop the fight when it happened to look at the cut, and he didn't do that because he didn't know when it happened. To make it worse, not only did he lie about knowing what caused the cut, but he had the nerve to take a point away. That means he not only lied by calling it a head butt, he also lied about it being intentional. The only time a point is deducted from a head butt is if it's ruled to be intentional. How could the referee know that if he didn't see it happen? This is a good example of how horribly screwed up boxing is. I know this fight was 20 years ago, but it's as bad or worse today than it was then.
That wasn't a cut to stop a fight! Gene has eventually became a legend in his own right but was known to have brittles hands. Always breaking from punching. Zarate is still one of the Greatest fighters ever as well as Fenech who became a 3 wt class champ.
@Ramon S: I thought the scoring was bs. 40-34 come on? I had it 37-37 so Im not saying Zarate actually won but only a few blind people, including the commentator, could have given Fenech round 3!
The head clash was obviously at 10:29, a punch did not cause that cut.Terrible stoppage, the cut was under the eye and in no way was going to affect his vision. I could easily have been Zarate who got the cut as they were both using their heads inside. Fenech was going to maul him for as long as it would last. A prime Zarate would have been a very different story. If Jeff didn't sit on his jab and threw caution to the wind with his flurries then Zarate would have counter punched him with power shots. A big banger was Fenech's weakness and they don't come any bigger than Zarate. That said until or if he was caught Fenech would have mauled him.
It was not a head butt , that was Carlos Zarate uppercut that cause the cut That fight without a question , Fenech was winning , but a was a TKO in favor of Zarate .
Two points your bigoted mind isn't interested in...Fenech not only pounded Zarate...he knocked him down. No matter how you want to look at it...a head butt is illegal....and Zarate had lost the fight from that moment on...he did that because he knew fenech was going to hammer him senseless. When there is a deliberate head butt...the ring doctor doesn't need mob approval for what they deem a serious or non serious injury, to stop the fight. He protects the fighter who has been injured. Had Fenech not been so far ahead on points at that time to win, ...Zarate would have faced disgrace and been disqualified on foul instead.
@@sqnhunter true mate. Fenech was winning easily. Yes CZ had steadied the fight to a degree but he would have been ponded the longer it went. Was already a pounding to the point it was stopped.
Remember u have a young Fenech here and an old zarate. This fight was close with good body punches from zarates left hook. Fenech shows superior speed and was pacing himself. Legit knock down in 4th takes that round 10-8 and was leading when fight stops prematurely which strange decision by Ref. Check out fenech v villasana and martinez. Much improved fenech and if it wasn't for his brittle hands and a dodgy draw in Vegas, he could have been huge star in USA and who knows 5 weight div champion.
Totally agree, the improvements in Jeff's boxing were huge. I was at the Villasana and Martinez fights. Jeff made them look 2nd rate even after being dropped by Martinez. Brittle hands and that dodgy draw after Jeff hardly fought in 2 years still showed how good he was. Lost his hunger after that.
Styles make fights. If the T-Rex armed Yum could drop Gomez early and hurt him again in the following round what could Fenech do? IMO, Gomez and Fenech are the best H2H fighters at 122lbs. Gomez clearly the greater fighter.
Hunting Wolf your boy was lucky he didn’t face Sanchez or Chavez they both would have beaten the living shit out of his dirty ass! He was a sorry ass bitch! Fuck Jeff Fenech!🖕🏻
@Kedbuka One other thing. Fenech was a beast at 118 but sometimes found 15 rounds hard due to his big weight cut. Zarate paced himself brilliantly. Fenech's best was 122. Zarate was still very good there, but Fenech would beat the Zarate of the Gomez or Pintor fights IMO.
This version of Zarate was not Zarate at his best and still did alright. He was involved in a lot of partying and coke at this point in his career. No disrespect to Fenech but nothing to go crazy about; freakin Aussies...
Karma, Zarata beat Ferreri 11 years earlier under similar circumstances.I doubt if Fenech would have beat Zarata at his best though,he averaged 4 rounds a bout and a 90% ko record.
Great fight fenech had just put him down in the same round that the fight was stopped because of I cut beautiful pressure by fenech zarate got away with how many low blow's those were not body shots those were right on the penis and sack really come the dirty fighter here he is very lucky it was not Wilfredo Gomez he would not have gotten away with that Wilfredo would have punched him on the ground in front of him manager and ref .Jeff wins 10 out of10 Jeff was a better fighter zarate was now fighting a fighter his size as a bantam weight he used to tower over his opponent's he stood five seven and a half Duran was five seven and fought all the way to super middle weight. When zarate fought fighters his size he crumbled. Real good bantam weight champion not same fighter when fought guy his size.
CARLOS ZÁRATE, SIEMPRE FUE UN PELEADOR MUY LIMITADO EN SU BOXEO. NUNCA SE DISTINGUIÓ DE SER UN PELEADOR VALIENTE. MUCHA PUBLICIDAD, PARA QUE SUBIERA ASUSTADOS SUS RIVALES. ERA LA ESTRATEGIA DE ARTURO HERNÁNDEZ. PUBLICIDAD Y ADMINISTRACIÓN. CERO ENSEÑANZA.

@@alfonsomoreno3748 agreed what an idiot. Jeff is ruff and tuff but there's been much dirtier fighters around. It's a fight not a dance and Jeff was a tuff customer. You'd be scared of anything by the sounds of it u big girl.
@@America-ji2eq What a load of rubbish. What Fenech had is what you need for most things you do in life. He was tough as teak and loaded with Montreal. You do not have much idea.
