YES! 1968 0N NOW!! listen to it often, what a great album~. BTW JEFF, this conversation with Robben when he was relaxed, not able to travel, etc. wow what a fabulous opportunity to hear the two of you talking about all these things when you both have down time. There were some pretty interesting descriptions of how to learning ways of making your own expressions heard in your playing. I'm sure those who hear this will benefit greatly in hearing these nuances & working on their abilities to do just what Robben has progressed to & you as well. I saw the live concert with you both with Andy Hess & Toss Panos playing Oasis, man, you played so beautifully. I wish there was a way we could also see the nights when Robben came into Brooklyn in the late Spring to perform with you, please if there is any way...

My future brother in law gave me his copy of Micky Baker's first book in 1980, I still attempt to revisit those chords, in fact one of the first exercises is a progression I like to use at jams to wake the drummer....

Robben's tips on playing are indispensable, and he tells great stories. Lots of us learned chords from Mickey Baker's book and later, Ted Greene's book, back in the day when there was no RU-vid and no CDs, only LPs, 45 RPMs, and analog cassette tapes.

So true.........I was dropping the needle on new Beatles's vinyl LPs. -repeatedly to learn a song in 1965. RU-vid so helpful these days.

Really an interesting and simple way to work out rhythm guitar parts - using voice leading to logically determine which chord to use. I have used Mickey Baker's books (1&2) for 30 years. I don't recall he said this so simply. Thanks Robben. Thanks Jeff for suggesting Robben cover this.

Jeff, Robben, These are great session. Thank you. Cool to talk about the overtone series. By the way the 7 contained in the overtones is the b7 (or as close as it gets),... so I figure the universe wants us to play the blues.

Mickey Baker's Complete Course in Jazz Guitar, Book 1, Part One, Lesson 1: "Below you have 26 chords which you must learn to use right away. There are more chords to learn, but these are the most important. We have to limit ourselves to the most important chords, because, as you know, there are so many meaningless chords for guitar...." :)

Indeed... have it right here... purchased it on a whim several years ago and found it again on the bookshelf after Robin mentioned it in an interview(!). Time to get to work on it.

I discovered the book 30 years ago after hearing a friend/music store employee laying down these great jazz chords. He wouldn't lend me his personal copy (always the salesman), so I had to special order mine! Coincidentally, a drummer I had been gigging with turned me on to Robben Ford's latest release, "Talk to Your Daughter," around the same time.

Always great learning from greats...Ill tell ya, in 18 months playing guitar, at 8 to 10 hrs a day, thats how infatuated i got...Im now not only writing and producing my own blues album, im the sole guitar player on it...Not everyone can put 10 hrs a day in to practicing guitar, im lucky to finally make music my full time job..it has consumed my life, has kept me away from booz and other foreign substances lol...The only regret i have is that ? i traded women in for my guitar, last night i fell asleep sitting up, guitar in hand, lol.., .So, in reality i dont sleep alone haha...Anyway, before i started blabbberinggg. I wanted to say i cant imagine how difficult it was in the 60s learning guitar...Even with books, translating and a lesson a week from a teacher...What ive learned in 18 mths wouldve taken 5 yrs EASY! I know this because, i tried it the old school way for 5 days, it was a nightmare, lol We have it made today as far as a learning platform....Theres a instant answer to any guitar question just a few clicks away...Once i sniffed out all the bull shit artist on youtube, and realized what i needed at that moment it was there...Just think, Jeff and Robben Fu$%ing Ford, are teaching us right now...PRICELESS! And does anyone have a guitar, that as soon as they pick it up, either a song comes out or they just bond with? .....What i thought was my least favorite guitar, i realize everytime i pick it up i either write a song or riff....such as life, i guess, we dont always end up with the chick or guitar we initially fall for!

I ADORE Robben Ford as a guitar player, but I'm convinced he doesn't actually remember how he learned (and practiced) to be able to do what he does now on guitar. As an example, when asked "what's your practice routine" he only manages to remember 6 months of playing scales and frequently talks about learning chords from a book. It's frustrating to hear this, because while he's not deliberately withholding information, this is in NO WAY what it actually takes to learn and play at his level, not by a mile. How did he figure out how to improv? Did he spontaneously figure out how to improv while touring with Miles Davis? Ummm no, doubtful. Did learning the diminished scale make him great so he just had to practice that? No. A word of advice to anyone out there: Your guitar heros might not be the best guitar teachers, being an amazing guitarist and musician is a different skill than the skill of learning to teach guitar.. and the challenge is sometimes a guitar master doesn't understand this as they attempt to teach others. Robben is standing on the shoulders of a younger Robben that current Robben doesn't remember well :)

ROBBEN SAYS no matter what level you're on, you need to play with other musicians & you find yourself doing things you never dreamed you would progress to.
