Finally!!! A jelly roll I can understand. You make so much more sense for me as a beginner quilter. I don't have to bother about sewing on a 45 degree angle, which has prevented me doing a jelly roll. Thank you.

patricia chandler Did you ever do that jelly roll quilt? Have you continued to quilt? I've been sewing for 52 years and About a year ago I got into quilting and haven't stopped. I just did the jelly roll quilt tonight and it was a blast!!! If you haven't done it yet, you have to give it a whirl.

I love the way this looks much better than those with 45 degree angles, plus you made it easy to understand. Thanks so very much! I hope to make one of these after I make two quilts for my two little granddaughters. ok. So, I sewed my first ever jelly roll quilt today following all of the above instructions. I have found a couple of things that I encountered that might help someone else: 1. I did make sure there were no repeated fabric strips right next to each other, that were duplicates, however, because the quilt top becomes cut, some strips will actually end up right next to each other. (as you can also see in this video above). 2. I made sure that there were no twists in my initial chain of rows, and it worked well when adding the end strip to the beginning one. After that first fold cut, however, I started to sew the strips and when I got to the end, low and behold, there was a twist in the chain. I had to take the entire seam out, lay it on the floor (not a small feat) and decided to utilize pins. The pins take longer to put in, but is well worth the time as I didn't have to keep stopping so much to adjust my fabric, and helped to make the fabric lay flatter and not twist so easily. I would also suggest laying out the strips in a continuous fan on top of one another so that you avoid any twists that might occur when sewing. All in all, it was fun to do this. It is worth it as long as you are up for "not knowing what it will look like until you cut the final fold!":)

There are a couple of things I don't understand. I have never done this but am considering trying it. My questions are: Why did you cut 18 inches off of the last piece in the jelly roll? and What was that button on your sewing machine that you pressed at the end of every pass and then after you finished sewing you pressed it again. What did that do? My questions may be stupid, in which case I probably didn't need to tell you I have never done this before. BTW, the finished product is beautiful...
@chicnscratch
@chicnscratch 9 лет назад
Maryann Anderson Hi Maryann, You need to cut the 18" off the last piece because if you don't all the seams will be lined up in the same spot on each row ...trust me this step is very important. The button on my sewing machine is the needle up/ needle down button. If you have any other questions you are welcome to email me anytime. Thanks!!

@chicnscratch
@chicnscratch 9 лет назад
+Jan st it depends on the length of the strips. The reason I cut 18" off the last piece of fabric is so that all the seams are not in the same place. Are all your strips the same length?
@mimi2-3
@mimi2-3 9 лет назад
no they are different lengths, it was originally cut for a log cabin quilt but that is too difficult for my first quilt(plus I have medical issues and cant piece together something so time-consuming.. they are a variety of lengths but the widths are the same.I hope this makes sense? thank you for your time!! Jan
@lilolmecj
@lilolmecj 7 лет назад
it has been a long time since you asked. You can use your random length strips for this quilt. The reason she cuts 18" off is to create a random design from the uniform length of the purchased jelly roll. Good luck.
