Honestly while the quality of the songs Jem sung went down over time, she occasionally had a few knockouts. This being one of them. It helps that isn't a hopelessly sugary sweet song and actually has some edge.
Guess they kind of are in a way, given the number of criminals they've caught and the countless times they foiled Eric and the Misfits' plans. The only thing they were missing were the super-powers.
i love their more fluffy stuff, but this sort of song was so good for jem. usually the misfits would go hard like this, but jem really does good with this track. its my fav from them i love it. i mean look how hard aja and jem rock out together!!!!
Even i got to admit, this had some decent beats too it [nice point about the rocking out, too]. I think this was jacked up, though; I remember my little cousin coming to me PISSED because even she thought the guy had won the battle. So I watched the tap with her, and had to admit, Dude had more technical skill than Raya. oh well, still turned out ok, and we got to see this battle so....yeah
Du kkha There were attempts at variation in the sound, as well as showing how they performed on screen, dude. Looked to me like Craig was the superior. Top it off, he had been playing as a professional for longer than Raya, who only trained herself privately, ins't that true?
Shenruss I'm sorry but there is no variation is the same flat track, and what they're showing it has nothing to do -most of the time- with the track. But if you wanna be more 'logical' the one with more experience should be the one they've chosen...
Beat this, if you can. Or are you just an also ran? I ain't no loser that you can dismiss. Beat this (X3) Beat this, go and try. If you can't, then wave goodbye. This is my moment. My turn at bat. Beat this. Beat that. Beat this. You think you're really something, don't ya? You think you've got it won, don't ya? Well I've got news, I ain't about to lose. Beat this. Do your best. And if you can't, may I suggest, You throw your hat in and blow a kiss. Beat this. And then if you can't. Beat this (X2).
I miss them too. I once got a bit tired of missing them and went out and bought the DVD set. It was a bit of a mistake. The morons (Hasbro maybe?) licensed it out to the biggest cheapskates they could find. I mean the discs were such poor quality that one disc wouldn't even play! I was furious after waiting so long but it wasn't worth it to send them back because of the shipping costs. I don't know why but the only people willing to sell it were in AUSTRALIA. That makes it even weirder because they record DVDs from a different format (Region 4). I was surprised because luckily it was recorded from a Region 1 source, which is the US/Canada. I am still hesitant about getting the second set, which is season 3 because I'm afraid the quality will be just as bad.
I knew deep down Craig wasn't gonna win. Raya learning that Jem and Jerrica were the same person aside, there was no way that they were gonna have a dude in an all-girl band.
though I don't mean that just for Aja, it would of been interesting to have a male in the band (could of made the holograms more different with singing), and they could of devoloped Craig into something more as well. I don't know, that's just my 2 cents (I don't hate Jem by ANY MEANS, it's one of my favorite series' of all time XD Just me shooting ideas).
I forgot how occasionally Jem and the Holograms could just put out jams that scream "I'm here to kick your ass." And this track particularly embodies that attitude.
They had screwed it up to put a male contestant as a hologram aspirin. Maybe consider Jetta versus Raya and after loosing goes with the Misfits as a second hand plate. Well who cares I love Jem series anyway.
This song is awesome! You can feel the power that was written into this song. =P Always was one of my favorites. I must really say, I never really like Raya... I always felt like Raya was just there so they can make Shana more available in the music videos. I always thought it would of been cool if Craig would of joined the holograms (though tbh he doesn't fit exactly), simply cuz it could of got Aja more involved in Music videos and have something more going for her in the story. =P
@89Animeknight2nd It's suggested in the episode this song is from, as he's forced to resign from the competition (which Raya won anyway), and more info about it was brought up in ep 50 "Britrock".
This is one of my all-time favorite Jem songs, even if I don't like Raya. The drums are just amazing, gotta love those drums. Not to mention the video; so well animated! :D
I knew Craig wouldn't win because he doesn't look doofusly hair metal enough. All he has is ordinary clothes and blue hair (which is his natural hair color... Jem is weird that way). While Raya has the THICK eyeshadow, huge hair, and fashion disaster clothes... She is practically already a Hologram. I didn't know however that he would just disappear for most of the show. I thought he would become more involved so that Stormer and Aja would have more of a plotline.
I do believe she did in "The Real Me" as well, and I that one (as part of the cartoon canon) can't be credited to Kimber, as most of her other songs did...
To whom it may Concern - actually I've never said that Jerrica can't go hard (for the canon's sake), but that Kimber couldn't compose it, but Jerrica herself did on "Imagine Me" and "The Real Me" (check the pointers of the episodes they debuted on and you'll agree). Other songs like "Beat This" are an issue of NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THAT SALMON-RED HAIRED YOUNGSTER, EVER. She got Jacqueline 's "creative vein" and knows her "blood sister" all too well... Same deal "on the other side" to Mary Stormer. She knows Pizzazz, HER BUSINESS PARTNER, better than she does herself.
@89Animeknight2nd True, but he is an undercover agent for the government, meaning any relationship he fully enters will be closely monitored. Now, I'm not bringing up Rio for the second part of your statement, as that was just a mess, period. I could bring up Shanna's boyfriend, but I think he's on again, off again.
It will look familiar because in the second intro what was used in season 3 and had the Jem girl song, used the scene. You will find that intro used a few clips form other music videos. :)
Craig and Raya sound the same. And could you really see a male as a Hologram? BTW: Did they ever tell Raya about the "behind the scenes" stuff regarding the group?
Slow Moe, to which Carmencita ran like crazy when she saw a purple and grey Casper (Jacqui Synergy may be LOL right now at this) "floating in mid air" (she actually loves to do that)...
+ALIYAH HARRIS, have you ever watched an episode of the JatH cartoon? (available as i type only on DVD's, on Netflix US or on Discovery Family Channel) Once you've watched at least a couple of episodes you'd know for sure...
This is an average Jem's song. I think the music is good . But the lyrics are a little bit too simple .And the lyrics are about music as usual , too many Jem's songs are about love Jerrica/Jem/Rio and music.
Leonard Euler... OK, Buster... Try a team of 3 IRL songwriters doing > 100 different songs over the course of maybe 18 months with the mandate that they had to be shorter than 100 seconds (1 minute 40 seconds), which means you couldn't develop them like a chart-hitting IRL pop song normally would. That's the Herculean task these guys and gals took in '85-86; it WASN'T PERFECT, but they OVERDID THEMSELVES for the "job at hand". They HAVE TO HAD some AVERAGE or BELOW "stuff" for the VOLUME OF WORK involved. And that would also go for Britta Phillips and Ellen Bernfeld (Jem and Pizzazz IRL singers) over in NYC 'cause some of the songs were not to easy to sing either (God knows how good voices both have).
syxepop I have never said the songwriter (Barry Harmann) did a bad job, I'm not a specialist about lyrics but I agree with you he did a good job overall.Nevertheless I modified a bit my commentary about that. I think one problem that makes the lyrics of Jem's songs not extraordinary is Jem's personnality : she is too serious , too virtuous ... And the other Holograms (except Kimber) have less personnality than Jem. Christy Marx and the others story editors should have created a more complex personnality for Jem . So I imagine for a songwriter, that must be a difficult task to write so many songs about the same subjects. And as I said before this wasn't the songwriter's fault of course! I didn't say too that Britta Philipp's voice in this song was bad! Where did you see it in my commentary?
Leonard Euler, OK, let's "ground this"... This is the kind of problem you'd have when looking at '80s stuff with '10s mind and morals (a lot has changed in our visions in 30 years)... Until that time (the FCC under Reagan in like '81-82 liberalized rules allowing cartoons aimed at kids which would promote their toys [of which 1st generation GIJoe, Transformers and He-Man cartoons were the 1st wave], except for the fact the characters couldn't promote 'em in the same show, but could on others). 'Cause the true mission of those cartoons was to SELL "storytelling took a back seat" (more in some shows than in others). In JatH's case (and in lesser proportions on GIJoe: ARAH and Transformers G1)""the creative barn" was populated by comic-book people (like developers/"creators" Christy Marx and Marv Wolfman and others) who KNEW the need for storytelling to make "the medicine go down smoother". That made the case for Jerrica's character development (which was heavily-handed toward PC of the era), on which she was "advanced" for most of the cartoons made until then, but hadn't left much for the other characters, something on today's different mentality it would've be SERIOUSLY REVISITED. Thinking seriously about the Benton ladies (Jacqui, Jerrica and Kimber) you can tell all had some serious development traits that weren't touched then: all are SEXY (on different levels), STUBBORN, A LITTLE BRATTY and HAD A FAIRLY "TOUGH SKIN" (even on their sensitive moments). The PC mind of the era wouldn't let "the creative barn" do much more with them (Kimber took it "to the outfield" somehow...). Today the cartoon would've needed at least 120 (from 65) episodes to develop even partially the main ensemble (you could get me started for once on how really Pizzazz and Kimber are so similar underneath or on the Kimber and "Mary Stormer" friendship issues...) to the point most "Pop People" would be satisfied. PS: All the references I always make of Jacqui Benton is on her "2nd coming" (the one with a "purple mane" and "metallic pink gloves and boots"). I always say SHE's way TOO ADVANCED to even consider an AI and in a revisit someone would be able to get a way to connect Jacqui's brain cells with Synergy's hard drive in one gorgeous and complex package... (hence the "Jacqui Synergy "moniker"...)
syxepop Yes, when I was a child, Synergy seemed to me more authentic than the "rest" of the show.Christy Marx did a good job about her "character" and created a scientific atmosphere which seemed to me serious. Now of course, I have realized even today a computer can't be like Synergy... In fact you made me realize this show lacks songs about Synergy ! Concerning Jem's character even when I was 8 years old , it seemed to me she was half-developped: Jem knows(a lot) love , music. But she don't know fear for herself ( except maybe in the Fan episode ),real anger , serious familial problems, real envy about something, sadness (except in "out of the past"),real hard work ,leisure for herself (except in the "Island of deception"but you know how this finished).I thought she was too serious, and today I think the same thing. Concerning Pizzazz and Kimber , I don't agree with you: Pizzazz is a great criminal and has very few moral standards (nevertheless she won't attempt murder deliberately), Kimber has strong moral standards. Kimber wants to be a great performer.Does Pizzazz really wants that?I don't think so. Yes Kimber has a little temper, but like every human being, you can't compare it with Pizzazz's systematic anger. One last thing : You mentionned Britta Philipps , Ellen Bernfeld as main singers but you forgot GORDON GRODY , don't forget him : in the last 8 episods you have 10 stingers new songs and only 3 new Holograms' songs and 2 new Misfits' songs . He ended this show AND HE IS MY PREFERED MAIN SINGER IN THIS SHOW!
Leonard Euler (and I thought I was the ONLY ONE with LONG COMMENTS, THANKS!) Jacqui Synergy STILL seems to be MORE HUMAN tan most in the bunch. So much so that a next revisit would make her taking a human/computer interface (something that is still in its' infancy in '15), which would be one of her "sci-fi edges" writers gladly gave to her in the '80s... Imagine to say that the MAIN CHARACTER needed MORE CHARACTERIZATION! That is how complex she's becoming (a hero with very HUMAN FLAWS and all, a concept still not well developed up to the mid '80s, even on Japan). I've stated that the difference was one has STILL at least an adult guiding her, while the other hasn't EVER (guess whom). That makes a BIG DIFFERENCE in two characters that have some of the same flaws... And about Gordon (brought in the last 11 episodes), the BRIDGE to today's IRL music by being the vocal coach of a certain "weirdo" singer stage-named "Lady Gaga". He (along with the late Vicki Sue Robinson) were brought to give a "disco edge" to the "Tecno Stingers" (there was an IRL "The Stingers" band beforehand, hence the extra I've added). I've always thought disco was a very definitive influence on what JatH's "creative barn" wanted to achieve... Hope that this stays as a LEGACY of this peculiar cartoon only THE FANS could write.
I was pulling for craig to win that contest. He quickly became one of my favorite characters in the show due to not putting up with the illogical crap that tend to plague it. For example, he had no problem physically/verbally threatening antagonist.
