This reminds me of that Family Guy episode where Peter falls in love with a woman on the phone not knowing it’s Lois. Then Lois disguises herself to meet him so she can test his loyalty: she catches him in the act and confronts him. But he justifies it by saying that he fell in love with Lois all over again. However, if he never knew she was Lois in disguise, this is a man who would have knowingly lied to his wife and cheated on her with another woman. It’s a measly excuse for his actions and he got no accountability for it.

I watched and loved 'Jem' back in the 80s, but I hated Rio. Thought he was such a self-righteous hypocrite. Always judging others' behavior while being jealous of both Jerrica and Jem when they so much as exchanged a few words with another guy. Yes, Jerrica and Jem were the same person, but Rio didn't know that and played both of them. And Jerrica/Jem would put up with this from Rio and always went simpering after him after another one of his jealous meltdowns and pander to it. Not a good example for impressionable young girls watching the show to think that Rio's behavior was acceptable. Anyway, that's my rant.

I love this cartoon. I don't think that it's some sort of "brainwashing" like fringe feminists are saying. The series was actually very progressive, literally was all about women, Jerrica ran her own business, and it was culturally diverse. But.... Rio is where they messed up for sure, I hate him. This video's trying to say that this is "teaching girls" this is okay and that girls will all enter toxic relationships (very much the same kind of stuff said with the Disney princess slander that many WOMEN have clapped back at), and that's frankly a stretch. Love triangles are common, but the problem with this one isn't any kind of secret sinister brainwashing scheme (feminists say that about any media especially anything "girly"), but moreso poor writing. Christy Marx isn't some evil brainwasher like this video implies. But should Rio have gotten consequences? Yes. Jerrica DOES call out Rio a few times when he's acting stupid. Problem is, all the dudes in her romance life seem to be manipulative bastards. If anything, that's sending a message that "all boys are manipulative, possesive, and will only use a girl for their own benefit". Notice Kimber's love life is better in the terms that the dudes she likes are actually sincere and genuinely care, but it's KIMBER who leads them on. Falls for them. Then leaves them behind. Then her two consistent boyfriends she cheats on both of them... with the other boyfriend, and a whole episode s dedicated to her wedding trouble because two good men are trying to marry Kimber, who is a crappy girlfriend, and is franl a spoiled brat? If we don't talk about Kimber being problematic, that's cherry picking

The best way to have it is by making Jerrica and Rio's relationship ambiguous and just barely out of the friend zone. As Jerrica likes Rio, she would openly pursue him as Jem, and Rio would reciprocate, but feel unfufilled because he never confessed his feelings to Jerrica. This way, Rio isn't cheating and Jerrica isn't hating him or herself for trying to get him to be with Jerrica and Jem.

Thank you! I've been saying this for years. Oh and remember that one episode where Rio yelled at Kimber for accidentally double booking with two guys who she wasn't even in relationships with, but rather casually dating. All the while he's seeing one woman behind the back of the girlfriend he's had since they were teenagers! Hypocrisy, I say! Give me Riot any day. He may have been arrogant, but at least he focused on one woman at a time. Forgive my long rant. I get wordy when I'm passionate about something. 😊

Kimber was also super hateable and insincere. She had so many boys interested in her. At least with several of these dudes they were one-episode characters. But then she had her two recurring dudes, Sean and Jeff. The relationship was also kinda "what are you doing", but on Kimber's side. She two times both of them because she's that loose, and it takes forever for her to even decide who she ACTUALLY wants. It's Sean.

Honestly i feel like jerrica should have told him from the very beginning. No one forced her to kiss rio as jem, it takes two to tango. I dont need to hear the bullshit that rio hates liars because jerric was basically cheating with herself and could have stopped it at anytime or maube just not start a relationship with rio as jem.

I watched this show as adult. Somehow never heard of it in my childhood. You said everything I was thinking. Rio was a ho. A lying, cheating ho. And, so blatant about it. I'm glad they were both her cuz if it wasn't, her sisters were all in on this and never would have told her. Jerrika is a hot mess too though. She seemed to have been with him for a while before the show. Why didn't she tell him she was Jem? And she did make the first move on him as Jem. He protested at first but just barely. We needed an episode where it came out that Jerrika was Jem

All this time you were Jem and you didn't tell me? Rio says. You made a fool out of me! You decieved me! You lied to me! But I can explain Jem says. I hate deception as Rio points at Jem. And I dispise liers! I never want to see you or talk to you again never! Jem crys turn it off Synergy. Synergy says it was only a simulation, my predictions could be wrong? The real Rio will listen I know he will Jem says. I have to tell him the truth no matter what it means. 👩‍🎤🎤⭐📺

Yeah, the one issue I always had with the show is that Jerrica never told Rio about her alter ego. How can Rio not see that Jem and Jerrica are both the exact same people?! They literally have the same voice, the same earrings and her band consists of her sister and foster sisters. This kinda feels like the Superman mythos. Why couldn't they just make an episode where Jerrica reveals herself before realizing their show was about to get canceled? Also, you're right: Rio is never a good boyfriend at all. He lets women be all over him. He's also a complete hypocrite. For a guy who claims himself to be honest and that he hates lying for whatever reason, he's been cheating behind Jerrica's back without ever realizing it. While I did like the show growing up, this aged like milk because of the ongoing story.

Loved this show and still do (found some of the dolls on ebay a while back) 😊 The relationship triangle didn't concern me as a youngster, but as an adult of course I think differently. Especially since I believe Jerrica made the first move as Jem (the early episode when they were on the yacht) My headcannon for this is that Jerrica was insecure about Rio's faithfulness; in her own words, she considers herself plain and boring. Maybe she wanted to see whether Rio would cheat on her and it got out of hand; she never stopped it because she started to like being Jem as she was nothing like her. Maybe in an alternate version, Jerrica considers completely erasing her true self to become Jem much to her sister and friends dismay; I don't believe Jerrica thought much of herself and Rio contributed to that with his two timing ways....even though she started it.

While I loved watching Jem when it aired on The Hub back in 2010, there was one aspect that always bothered me. It seemed unfair that Rio would openly express affection for Jem while Jerrica seemed indifferent about it, however ironically becomes jealous of the situation she put herself into which goes into my next point, but what truly irked to a passion was Jerrica's failure to tell Rio her secret with him from the beginning during the battle of the bands arc. It just makes rewatching the show painful knowing how my feelings back in 2010 stills holds back and is one of the few IPs I really want a good reboot to happen

Damn. I need to rewatch this show with adult eyes if I can find it somewhere. I thought it was sweet that Rio fell for her regardless of her appearance. I didn't think he was in a supposed monogamous relationship with either of them. Especially because I think they broke up in episode 1. To me, dating isn't the same thing as being in a relationship. I expect both people to be seeing other people during the dating phase until one voices the desire to be exclusive.

Honestly the whole triangle was done better in the IDW comics, it really made Rio a more likeable character. Rio in the show was a hot headed man that was ok with cheating on Jerrica with Jem and never once thought it wasn't ok not to have a relationship with both of them. Though Jerrica as Jem shouldn't have perused him, but I believe that's because ultimately Jerrica forgot that she's a different person as Jem and couldn't stop herself from flirting with Rio. It's apart of the reason why she has a identity crisis in the show.

you really think riot is better? He's super possessive, he basically forces himself on her, he takes her on a vacation against her will (so, kidnapping). Yeah he had an abusive dad which sucks but his behavior before that episode was TERRIBLE. Rio sucked too but at least he didn't kidnap her or assault her

Joe where Jerrica breaks up with Rio and falls in love with Sergeant Harlan Moore, code name: Snow Job a few months later after she takes time off from dating to allow herself to heal from her toxic relationship with Rio.

My mom always hated this show, and I never understood why, until I watched it as a fully grown adult. It's still a guilty pleasure, but so many scenes seem written to rub grown women the wrong way. "Gimme Gimme" is supposed to show how greedy the Misfits are, but all I hear now is a song about a woman who expects some quid pro quo up front, because she's so tired of getting lied to, led on, and used up.

Love triangle? Honey it was a love steel wool when you add pizzazz, riot and minx. I think the reboot handled this relationship better. They not only gave a reason for rio not to know that Jen and jerica were the same person (which, let’s be real, would have spared us this headache to begin with) but they kept the relationship dynamics different as well (as much as we want to blame rio jerica did want it both ways)

Well, sorry but that's what you think. But Rio probably knows more about Synergy than we think! Emmett Benton showed him a lot of things when he was young about electronics, Rio saw Emmett working on Synergy without knowing what it was for and he probably also knows a lot about Emmett's life. Rio has already discovered that Jem and Jerrica are the same person and when he confronts her in Broadway Magic, he is disappointed in Jerrica who doesn't want to trust him but he loves her and continues to play his love triangle game. During the conflicts between Rio and Jerrica, we see Rio's frustration as he waits for her to finally tell the truth but she never does. He knows that she is really hiding something important and that there is a connection to his father and the machine he created. Rio never cheated on Jerrica but Jerrica actually did it with Riot when they were on the cruise ship (don't tell me they just had a good time at the casino and didn't do anything else in the bedroom or on the desert island LOL). Rio and Jerrica have known each other since they were children and have been in a relationship since adolescence, they have never known other people or had any other romantic relationships. It's perfectly normal that at their ages, they are looking for different things, different sensations and feelings. They're experiencing something big with the band's rising popularity and all the attention they're receiving because of Jem. It is not for nothing that Jerrica easily falls under the spell of Riot too, a seductive man who exudes strong sexual attraction. It's probably the same attraction that Rio has towards Jem.

She was not gullible. She wanted the better looking guy. There were plenty of other guys. I had friends throughout the years in similar situations. The guy is always tall with a square jaw and usually a white guy. I'm tired of women going after unattainable guys and then complaining and passing blame on all men. Toxic people can be toxic because they have the looks and people let them get away with it. The narrator here is a big childish hypocrite that cannot admit that her values are just as bad if not worse than the type of guy she's compaining about.

I do wonder how he couldn't tell she was the same girl by from the kiss, maybe he did know, or maybe he suspected she was Jem, but thought she was keeping it a secret for some reason so he never brought it up, I just think it's odd that he wouldn't be able to tell the similarities of the kissing, the hologram might make her look different, but it's not like it would make her kiss differently, or make her lips feel different, if he knew, or at least suspected it, then the loving her for who she is deep down does make sense, I'd like to think he at least knew subconsciously that she was Jem, also I used to watch the animated show and thought it was great, when I heard they were making a live adaptation, I was really hyped to see it, I couldn't wait to see how they would do all the special effects and show Synergy, and then I saw the live action movie, and I was so disappointed.

This video is good! But I want to add another bullshit thing in Jem when it comes to romance. Kimber's love life. Ignoring how Kimber's such a darn brat the whole series, Kimber has a problem. Yes, she finds a lot of dudes attractive. Normal. But my problem is the relationship between her, Sean, and Jeff. Sean and Jeff, unlike Rio, are actually good men who sincerely care about people including Kimber. Kimber starts of hanging with Jeff. Then in one episode, she goes all grabby at Sean when she meets him. The series has her toying with Sean, and whatever one-episode man appears, when she was DATING JEFF. JEFF JUST DISAPPEARS FOR A WHILE. Then in the wedding episode, she has to deal with both Jeff and Sean being attracted to her and wanting to marry her. Firstly, Kimber should not be allowed to marry either of them because like Rio, she can't be faithful to either man and they shouldn't get to try again with her because Kimber is way too loose and she's ungrateful, then they try to go basically "what do I do?". Imagine if she told Jeff she was seeing Sean for like, months, imagine she told Sean she had been seeing another man, imagine if she told BOTH of them about her escapades with other men throughout the show, because seriously it's basically a child friendly, censored, genderbent version of the "band member and the groupies" thing. Those men are basically groupies to Kimber, and Jeff became just another one when she LEFT HIM BEHIND. I hate Rio, but KIMBER IS ALSO A PEST. Again, she gets no consqeueces, she gets Sean in the end, Jeff is left in the dust forever, and they portray it as okay.

Actually since Synergy can create holograms anywhere, not just overlaying people, they had Jem and Jerrica both at the same event every so often just to drive home to people, they cannot be the same person.

I always felt that on some level that Rio knew they were both one in the same. Jerrica knew this as well. Technically, none of what they did was cheating.

Man here. I absolutely disagree. Rio had many chances with Pizzazz and he refused. He did see both Jerrica and Jem at the same time btw (even while one of them was a hologram). Also pls consider that Jerrica is 70-80% times Jem and when she's Jerrica, she's busy with work and overall is cold with Rio (no wonder if he thinks she doesn't care about him). She's aware of that Rio "has a girlriend" but even then she pushes herself to him as Jem in almost every episode. I blame Jerrica but tbf there was that episode which showed what would happen if he would tell Rio, but still.

Yeah I was so confused with what I was watching and hearing! He's a cheater no doubt, regardless if it's her alter ego. He should've stayed faithful to jerica if he truly loved her. OR! just maybe Rio knew jem was secretly jerica and just did what he did since he knew it was her anyway so he felt no guilt.

IDK. Does Rio ever pursue any any woman who _isn't_ Jerrica? If not, then there is something these women have in common, that other women don't have, and the one thing they have in common is that they are all Jerrica. Not the Rio is handling it in the best way, of course. But that he's attracted to Jerrica's "core" might be the truth. But I've probably seen a half-dozen eps of the show in my life, if that many, so what do I know?

It could be true. But he don’t know that all the women he likes is one woman. To him, they’re all different women and in his mind he’s still cheating on Jerrica and has no problem with it.

Was a boy, so I wasn't the target demographic for this show. I did try to give it a fair shake - I thought the technology looked cool, and I always kinda liked things that use music in interesting ways (Silverhawks was on about the same time, and I thought the Bluegrass/Melodia rivalry was one of the best parts), but Jem just lost me with how soap opera-y the plots could get. Funny that you should mention gaslighting; one of the episodes I do remember was one where everyone kept telling Jerrica it was her birthday and she had no idea what was going on and she got really disturbed by it.

Instead as Jem she asks are you attracted to me Rio? Of course he is you're an Perfect Hologram and he feels comfortable with you cause you're Jerrica and now you pot your boyfriend cheating in you with you! You are right he's gonna say Deception! Sorry, but it rubs me the wrong way, how Jem fans put all the accountability on Rio but not on Jerrica/Jem. Not only did she create the problem, but Jerrica would also initiate a lot of the 'physical' contact with Rio as Jem. If you are going to criticize the Jem/Rio/Jerrica dynamic, you should criticize all sides not simply put all the blame on Rio. The whole thing just comes across as benevolent sexism, where women aren't held responsible for their actions the same way men, because our culture don't treat women as people with agency.
