Excellent performance by Jeremy Brett as Maxime De Winter in the adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier's work for the television.
A shy young lady company is in Monte Carlo when she meets handsome and wealthy widower Maxim de Winter, whose beautiful wife Rebecca has recently died in a tragic accident at sea. The two fall in love and when Maxim asked her hand, she accepts without hesitation. Yet his happiness is soon diluted. The couple moved to Monderley mansion, home of the Winter, where the new Mrs. de Winter discovers that Rebecca has left a strong impression on everyone in the house.

Anna Massey did a wonderful job with Mrs. Danvers' monologue - cause that's really what is was. . .She evokes her feelings for Rebecca with such subtleness - she is so controlled - i've never seen her play a role like this. She does it completely her own way and seems, to me, more human than Judith Anderson who played the role in the movie - although J.A. is a very good actress, too. (i do think it is very difficult to try a play a role which George Sanders played - no one like him.)

Was that the actress from the original movie? I remember when I was growing up and we only had one tv, my mom would watch these movies on tv from the 40's and 50's and I remember her watching, "Rebecca", on tv and I remember the maid was a really weird looking character!

Well, wouldn't you be with the ghost of the first wife still hanging around, with a crazy maid who brainwashes her that she can't compare to the beautiful, the inimitable, the perfect in every way, Rebecca? Even her hand writing was to die for, according to what I remember reading in the book. I'd feel inadequate, imperfect, too, with all that double meaning coming from the husband, and then the adoration coming from the maid, and the second wife was sort of plain, pretty, but, plain and dull. Can't compete with that.

I hate to disagree with Danvers, but I think Rebecca's bedroom is dark, overdone and depressing as hell. I realize styles change, but geez!! I also realize that the house is depicted as being very old and that the room is located in the original part of the building, but, again, way, way too dark and heavy in its character. No wonder Danvers likes it so much.

I seem to remember that in the book, the room had the best view of the ocean and was probably the best room in the whole place. But, its been years and years since I read the book, and I found it a strange book, and to this day, don't know if I like it or consider it an iconic piece of work that its considered.
