The two fall in love and when Maxim asked her hand, she accepts without hesitation. Yet his happiness is soon diluted. That was excellent! Thank you so much for uploading this. I'd never seen it before. I loved Jeremy Brett. He definitely captured the character of Maxime de Winter perfectly.

You are a star for posting this series on You tube. Remember watching it on Sunday evenings on BBC 1, thought it was great then and still think it is great. Fun to see the old BBC spinning world too! Many thanks for posting it. Mr Brett was utterly brilliant. Thanks again Cehache.

Wonderful production with a superb cast. As has been noted most faithful to the book except for the diagnosis of Rebecca's illness.

Jeremy Brett always has so much going on inside; the look in his eyes at 1:06 when the doctor says Rebecca could never have had children is fantastic. He's not moving a muscle, but you can tell he's absolutely gutted, realizing how completely Rebecca played him in their last meeting. Not many actors can do that without throwing furniture around, but he could.

This is the best version, the most faithful to the book. Wonderfully cast, exquisitely filmed. I loved the music too -- is it Debussy? Thank you so much!

Just occurred to Me: is it ever mentioned-in the book or movies-what the young (second) Mrs. deWinter’s first name is????

No, it isn't. At the beginning of the book she narrates that her name is frequently misspelt, and later Maxim comments that her name is lovely and unusual, but we never learn her first name.

Good acting in this production. Though it is hard to feel sympathy for any of the characters in it.

Disagree. Feel for Max and the second wife, and Frank, who was clearly a target, if not victim, of Rebecca.

@@soniavadnjal7553 yeah tbh in the book Frank never had an affair with Rebecca, she sexually harassed him, and he threatened to leave cos of it,.

I will have to re-read Rebecca because I do not remember her having an incurable illness- I remember something about a window- did she jump? I was only 17 yrs old and was a forest lookout. Y

Who is she narrating her dream to at the end? I don't understand who she is telling this all to - an older bald man who is definitely not Maxim.

Sorry, but to me this version does not hold up - the burning of Manderley was just of thrown in - the dramatic ending of the movie, even though not faithful to the book, was much more satisfying - with what happens with Danvers! fits the story much better - and i remember reading the book, too. the scene with the doctor is also not dramatic enough - just sort of falls flat - i'd love to know what the reviews were.

alexa penn you are right. The ending was a bit screwed. By the book and an older movie, Mrs. Danvers is the one burning the house and she was seen in the window. Superb movie, live Brett, but the true ending should have been there.
