The interviewer says “in 30 years” people will still be watching and loving them and they were absolutely right! I’m writing this in 2023, about 30 years after this interview and I have just been watching the entire series start to finish! They hold up marvelously well! What an incredible actor Jeremy Brett was! 🎩
Agreed. I just watched the whole series and I'm going to watch it again with my daughter. There can be no better Sherlock Holmes than Jeremy Brett's and Watson is also superb.
Jeremy had such a charisma that broke through time and space. It is saddening that both Jeremy and Edward are no longer with us. May their souls rest in peace...
30 years later the show still holds up to any other Holmes media and any other detective show. What an amazing, and brilliant series these folks put together.
ITV and all those involve did a terrific job, no one has really attempted to surpass it. There are pieces that state that the Russian early 80s version of Sherlock Holmes was better than the ITV effort (actor Vasily Livanov) but it's hard to tell given it's non-English.
Jeremy Brett was so excellent as Sherlock Holmes can't read the original stories anymore without seeing him, and David Burke and Edward Hardwicke were so amazing as Watson . I don't think anything can beat the Granada series, it had amazing actors, it was for the most part very close to the original stories and just everything.I also love the Holmes adaptions that are modern and take more leaps with the character like elementary And Sherlock but Granada will always be my favourite.
yes i agree he played the part so well as Sherlock Holmes but for me David Burke was the better of the two Watsons ,fantastic acting as well ,theres just something about the stories that encapsulates you ,i guess its the time of the horse and carriages , the oil lamp lighting the nights with shifty shadows on the walls etc
@@Hithere-ek4qt I mean I’m 16 and I think that Jeremy, David and Edward are the one and only both Watsons were exceptional idk what that means age wise 😂
I think you are both right, Jeremy Brett as Holmes he is fantastic, but Basil Ratbone also.. was great...Different times, different styles... But they both are wonderful as Holmes If i should decide who Is the one i prefer...i would go for Jeremy:)) P.s: Sorry for my english ,but i m italian...i hope you understood :))
I am watching Sherlock Holmes series on NetFlix for last 4 days continuously. But not even for a single moment I found it boring. I have read the complete Sherlock Holmes for at least 5 times, still watching the series was really a great experience. And all of this because of Jeremy and Edward\David. I think the only other audio-vidual experience which came so near to the original novel was The Godfather saga. I cannot imagine any other actor than Jeremy as Sherlock Holmes.
I recently learned of Mr. Brett's death this week - 15 years later-and was heartbroken. I mourn the death of this great artist, the only 'Sherlock' which I can ever appreciate, but I celebrate his life and work. Dave1955
Much like Sherlock who always knew it was the small details that were the most significant, Jeremy captured that singular trait. That's why we will be able to watch these episodes for years and find something new every time.
Ah, man, it's always a joy to watch these two on screen. They are picture perfect Holmes and Watson, and it's a joy to watch them work. Much love from the U.S. of A.
So good to see Brett relaxed like this. There are interviews when he's either coming into or going out of a more manic state. His mental affliction is well documented, though unintentionally. Love this man, and how he fought each battle.
“And this miracle occurred” classic line from Jeremy Brett ❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹🥰🥰🥰😘😘😘💋💋💋💋 they had brilliant chemistry on and off set. Best friend Sherlock Holmes could have Jeremy Brett said. What a jem
Jeremy Brett is so handsome in real life but , because of his amazing acting skills , as Holmes he creates an image of obsessive insular rejection with regard to mankind's ability to love or show affection . Enigmatic , unreachable and rather severe as Holmes and really quite brilliant in Rebecca because he scared me witless when I was young . Sad loss at such a young age .
thanks for agreeing. brett is also my fave, and only for holmes-series, but also for his all-acting talent. he had the voice, the looks and the grace... I can't believe he is not with us.
To me, Jeremy Brett is _the_ Holmes but I can't possibly say who's the better Watson. I really like David Burke and Edward Hardwicke, they both make the part their own.
It's 2022 and I'm part of the newer generation. He's right about it holding up 30 years later and in the years to come. I'm a huge fan of Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke/David Burke.
A great series. Not one bad episode. I like all the different Sherlock and Watson series and actors. The stories are so good. Each "pair" makes them unique.
Jeremy is the real Sherlock Holmes, no one could ever come so closer and I daresay no one would ever come again. I would missed those 16 stories Granada production left unadapted, hope someday Jeremy will come back in another life ,happier ,healthier and handsome as he ever was and will the pending job.
Sherlock was a complicated man that needed a diverse and completely committed actor to portray him. No one will ever resonate this character as well as Jeremy. He will stand alone as the best ever.
Nice interview. Jeremy Brett became Sherlock Holmes - his absolute study of the character shows in each performance. Please keep in mind however the language of the day...'partner' and 'intimate friend' - both phrases used in the orginal stories did not mean what our society tends to lean toward today. Another phrase used in the stories/books is "knocked up", which simply meant a knock at the door woke them from sleep!
What a store of entertainment. I can watch this again on itv every episode. We used to record this stuff on great big VHS cassettes. Time changes but the quality of what they made at Grenada endures …
I'm find it very interesting to see Jeremy Brett in his natural state I keep thinking of his character of Sherlock Holmes and then comparing it to his true self, he is a very brilliant actor and certainly had me Charmed and engaged as a member of his audience. I hope and pray that his soul is resting with the Lord Jesus Christ.
I went to see on Dec 26 and I loved it - I'm willing to see whatever interpretations others have manily because I'm such a fanatic for Sherlock Holmes - Still, JB will always be number one by FAR!
@teamdoa I agree. I actually consider Burke and Hardwicke as equally the best Watson. When I say who my favourite Watson is I just say ''The Granada Watson''. Burke suggested Hardwicke himself and it was a great choice as they both look similar and they both gave thoughtful performances.
hese Granada Productions were very faithful to the stories. For decades since the beginning of film Holmes fans were waiting for these superlative expositions. Jeremy Brett was everything needed and more. The production values, the sets and the other actors Burke, Hardwicke et al brought the stories to life perfectly. The beauty of all this is that now any director or actors hired to have a go at the Holmes stories do not have to compete as it has already been done. So now they are free to experiment. The Benedict Cumberbatch/Martin Freeman productions were great. I hope they do more. Long live our appreciation and enjoyment of Jeremy Brett, we were lucky to have shared time on this planet with such a great actor.
I have happened upon this series rather late though I probably had watched a few episodes on the local PBS station. Now though I can appreciate the dynamic of the characters and the subtly of the performances. It's nice seeing Jeremy Brett smile in the interview as Sherlock Holmes rarely does and when he does its without warmth, unless its directed toward Watson, Mrs. Hudson or someone else that he respects and cares for.
This is the first time in this particular video that I see the resemblance Edward Hardwicke has to his father. I mean I've seen him literally thousands of times by now and for some reason I only saw it now. He does resemble him to a great degree. Great vid, thank you, love seeing these guys on and off the screen.
also my big thanks for this interview..i never had the uppertunety too watch him this way..he was the best sherlock homes acteur in my eyes ..and still i love it too see him as that ....okee byyyy and thanks donri
I suppose really its personal choice thats not to say Burkes not excellent but personally I am for Hardwicke. But there's one thing we all agree on Jeremy Brett is perfect as Holmes and as I source out his other roles I find that he was one hell of an actor and become more and more enchanted by him
