Walking through the hall at that show was the first time i felt God.

Every song Jerry played he made his own. Never has there been a guitar player who conveyed such emotion.

Garcia’s love of Dylan’s work would naturally have led him to Daniel Lanois. Lanois produced Oh Mercy and all of the sudden Bob had his mojo back. This song was the most modern song I ever heard Jerry cover, since it was no more than 3-4 years old when this was done. Jerry seems to love the song as we all do, and then finds a space for him to add his magic. The fact that Jerry could dig a great songwriter is proof of his true greatness. Him covering Dylan always reinvented the song for me. This he finds a beautiful space over the top as he always always did. Like Blues for the Rainforest he just found magic when he was moved.

I was lucky to be in attendance this night and what a show it was! Portland was so laid back this night and it was simply pure joy for us Jerry heads. Getting off Dead tour to go to " church" with Jerry were some of my most cherished memories of his music. This tour has often been over looked but man are there so many gems. Jerry had absolute freedom in this band and this song, one of may favorites, in particular I think best represents that. Happy trails!

I attended four JGB shows. Two were atop Squaw Valley Ski Resort, less than a week after I moved from LA to Tahoe City I didn't have a ticket for the second day, so I hiked up the back of the mountain (oh, I should add, it was s it was Summer..) When I made it to the top, I traversed across a ski run on a path that led straight into a waiting security guard. I gave him the price of a non-scalped ticket, and he let me through, right around the time Booker T. and the MG's were jamming on the stage.) Who else played that weekend??? The Neville Brothers, Jimmy Cliff, Bela Fleck, David Grisman, and Jerry playing, with what can be described as 'youthful vigor.' It was fun. Jerry said he preferred playing with this band then the high pressure Dead shows where everyone became a critic, and the cool kids had soundboard hookup, and warned the fans outside the taping section not to scream, clap or sing along. It was 70 and sunny. Lake Tahoe, and it's surrounding peaks was the backdrop.The night ended with smiling, 'grateful' fans wandering down a pitch black dark mountain trail, many still tripping, with the true freaks speeding by on their mountain bikes.Here's the cool thing.I don't recall Jerry ever forgetting a line whilst playing with this band. It's also kinda spiritual, with Jerry singing with gospel trained background singers. Oh,the third Jerry show was at Cal Expo in Sacramento. The seats weren't assigned (if there were even seats in this real life fairground). Somehow I got front row. Finally I could dance along at a show and have a valid , non-psychotic reason to say to myself, "Jerry can really see me!" Which is way different than "knowing" Jerry's playing along with my boogie in the upper deck of the other end zone The final JGB show was a Halloween following his second near fatal diabetic coma.I recall he had to relearn how to play guitar. I was concerned. He was healthier and more energetic and "with it", It was special..JGB's songs showed his range, from the early days in a jug band, then blues, then weirdness and scary terrapins in Space, and back to Marvin Gaye, and a ridiculously lengthy Dylan mini-novel like "Simple Twist of Fate." The best part..every song was a 'Jerry tune!' No cowboy medleys! (Sorry, Bobby).

Crying tonight watching for many times over, the master even in his decline.

There are many excellent versions of this song, by superb artists, including Bobbie, Phil, Larry C and Teresa W from 2018, but it's awfully hard to do any better than Jerome John Garcia, even as impaired as he may have been. Thanks for sharing.

The last time i saw Jerry Garcia play live was the JGB show in Devore, California. Jerry's voice here is definitely tired; nonetheless it is indeed another beautiful rendition of a song so appropriate thematically to the struggles he (and many ) have faced. His subdued approach accents the soulful backing vocals.

This was a good noodle, but Jerry was really high this show. I knew the man, and when he was slumped over and studying the fret board, he wasn't 100 %. Still love this song and performance. He was giving his all as usual. There's another video of JGB doing The Maker on RU-vid that is better than this. I'll find it and post the link.

Wow, where'd this come from? Did you shoot it? I love your stuff - some of the best audience video on the internet. Did I read you use a Sony ECM-908 into a separate recorder? Maybe that was someone else...I use that mic, the one that mounts on a camcorder. It's a great mic. I am amazed at all the Dead video that's coming out, before mini-DV and small camcorders. A lot of people sync the audio with soundboards or audience audio...but if this was a VHS camcorder (quality is too good for hi8 I think), some of those internal mics were pretty good...Sorry to go on about technical stuff, bottom line: this is an extraordinary capture of one of my fave JGB tunes. I saw a great version at the Warfield right around this time, but I've never heard a recording of it, much less seen a video..
