I thought that was an original song by Confederate Railroad, only to find out just now that Jerry Jeff Walker sang it on this show back in 1990! Way to go! Wish he was still alive.
Down Home country music, all the musicians played so great, the piano the lead guitar and the steel guitar were Fantastic, and the singing was TERRIFIC.
I met Jerry Jeff about 1972 near Boston. He was so cordial. Who'd of thought a New York mountain man would tumble over the cusp of cowboy country. A kind hearted gentleman.
Swears like a sailor, which today is Veterans Day! God Bless all that volunteered and especially those, just called to duty. Few remain. My Dad served under, General, George Patton. Old, Blood and Guts! You never complained. Just did your job.
When i was first given Live at Greune Hall, I played it incessantly. for 3 years i listened to nothing but JJW, and he is never far from my go to list. And this song was close to end of tape, and I thought Jerry Jeff was getting drunk as the night progressed. But seeing this, it is just as raunchy, loud and wild. And I don't think Jerry Jeff even drank at this point. Thanks Jerry Jeff. I'm glad you didn't suffer too long, and are in the presence of God right now.
@@foobarmaximus3506 To me, that is the only time I will sin the sin of envy. That sounds wonderful! Of course to me, he was larger than life. But in Texas like you said, it was just a great part of growing up!
@@foobarmaximus3506 The music, the weather, the women! Texas has it all now, being one of the only States where the 2nd amendment will never be dismissed and people believe in the simple, good things in life. I wish I could have been there too!
@@foobarmaximus3506 And that is exactly what Jerry Jeff was singing about! How he found this oasis among a concrete country. And that is how I feel, about 30 miles from Toronto, that I have just a taste of a place I would very much like to go to. Covid is over but my finances remain the same! It is my deepest goal to visit and perhaps live there somehow.
stumbled across this video & got to watch my ol' friend play lead. Sadly Gary Walker died several years ago in an accident on a ranch in Wyoming. Heckuva musician.
He was from N.Y. Originally. Moved South and more kinda like, Texas. Things grow bigger there! He brought all his trappings along though. A mix of many musical genres.
This rocks!!! Beats the hell out of Confederate RR. They turned it into bubble gum. That's Jerrys son playing lead. Bass player looks like Warren Zevon. Used to watch this program every week and had a lot of it on VHS.
That's subjective. They're both great in their own right (and Confederate Railroad's music video is what really raised this song to a new level and brought attention to it that it never would have received otherwise). And no this is not the original. The original was done by its writer Chris Wall. Jerry heard it being played live at a bar in WY and asked if they could show him how to play it. He then recorded his version which was the first version put down on an official record label. But that doesn't make his version any more "original" than Confederate Railroad's version. Neither does it make his version more or less awesome than the version he heard or Confederate Railroad's or his own or anybody else's various live versions. It's just a great song at its very core and it's one that can be altered and played differently live by many bands (and by the same bands in different versions) and it never fails.
how is lyold maines doing that electric guitar solo on his steel that is just awesome and i love it. he had a way to do that and i would like to know how he has to have a pickup on the steel or a electric pedal or something because i have heard steel guitars and they dont just sound like that that is awesome though
LLoyd is Natalie Maynes father [lead singer for The Dixie Chicks] and played with Joe Ely for a long time-i saw him in the early '90's with Terry Allen-he was as nice a guy as you could find.Check out the older Joe Ely albums.
