Jerry Jeff Walker will always be alive! Love this guy! He is a hit in 3 generations. My Dad, my son, and me. We l still sing his songs!!! They will always be around!
Jerry Jeff will always be my favorite singer ,nobody’s ever put so much Into their music as he did and My Buddy is just one example!all I have to do if I’m down is put Jerry Jeff on and he can get me though it. I will always be thankful for this very amazing man!
When I moved to Austin in 1981, the first concert I saw was JJW at Gruene Hall. Second row. Fight broke out right in front of us. JJW just kept playing away. Our group put our feet up on the seats that were thrown around. Quite a night.
This song brings back memories of Saturdays with my Pawpaw in his pickup truck. He passed away last year, this song always brings a smile with those memories.
RIP JJW. I used to have an old 83 F150 that my kids and I would sing this to in. No A/C, so we used to have the windows down. They're all older and moved to other places across this nation of ours, but ahhh, the memories. Listening to this brings a tear to my eyes. Thank you for all the great memories.
still driving my old '79 Chev... new trucks just don't feel the same. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who likes to cruise on a moonit night with the lights off! Thanks, Jerry
Riding with my dad in that old green late 70's F350. Sometimes to the rodeo. Sometimes to the grocery store. Sometimes to the wilderness of northern Utah with a 3-horse bumper-pull trailer for a weekend riding the high country. Thanks dad. 🐎💨
My grandpa had a big ol' light blue Dodge pick-up that we rode around in...including trips to the county dump. Then stop for a "frosty" (soft serve ice cream) on the way back to his house. Miss my grandpa ("Pops") and that ol' truck. Love this song!
Used to play this song when I was a morning show guy in Western, PA (WLMI) - folks would toot and wave as they passed the front window.........brings back many memories - the Jerry Jeff is a great Egg - thanks for making me smile and bringing back good memories!
i cry when he talks about his grandpa cause thats what we use to do exactly what we use to do when he died i was in camp working never talked to him a month prior im 26 when he talks about being with his kids it makes me feel better time to make me a family and sober up
Saw JJW first in 72 at Santa Fe amphitheater with Lost Gonzo band,,and 2 dozen shows since..Jerry Jeff presents his music to us with unabashed feeling...he's Layin his Life on the Line..of all the genre of music from Floyd to Skynyrd I can most relate to Scamp Walker..he has influenced my life in a very positive way...so here's to the King of Texas music!! Cheers JJ !!
I am crying listening to this. This was my childhood. My dad used to let me drive (although I’m not sure it’s as right to say he let me drive as it would be to say he *made* me drive) while he sipped wild turkey and chased it with a 20 ounce Coca Cola until one or the other was empty. Then he would either stop at a gas station for more coke or the liquor store for more wild turkey. We were in an old Chevy S10. Those were some of the best days of my life. Times were simpler back then, hitting old dirt roads as a 9 year old kid while my dad blasted JJW and got shit faced drunk. Then keeping the secret from my mother that I drove his drunk ass around 😂 He is now 11 years sober but this song and others by JJW still remind us of those carefree (or so we imagined) summer nights in Bowdon, Georgia. RIP JJW. Love, Me and Dad
Grandpa and I went everywhere in his old blue Ford. My favorite times were when we'd go up to the flea market on Saturdays; I'd stay over at his house Friday nights so we could get up and get going by 5:30 AM, when the sun was just crawling over the pasture and the grass was so wet with dew that you'd be soaked to the ankles after just a few yards walking in it. But I digress. Bless JJW and this song for always bringing back those happy memories.
This song just makes me SMILE. Despite going through personal hell. I can still l smile and giggle a bit to this song. God Bless Jerry Jeff. Thanks darling. For picking up my spirits.
I love this song. My two kids love doing this, we ride around in the pick up struck from Luckenback and Sister Dale. Too much fun, seen JJW and the Gonzo Compadraes for years, years, I was 13 the first time I, and 51 last! Tried and True! Got married in Belize! True fan, Im the fan that sings along with every song, in the wrong note! Opera House in Galveston to most of our famous ball rooms around Texa! I take my hat off to Scamp!! Keep on keeping on! Life is Good!
Just heard He has moved on to the next world. This was my favorite song of his. Was lucky enough to see him play a small bar in my town. The kind where you can approach him and get an autograph after the show. Great show and a nice man.
Mr. Jerry Jeff: I've loved your voice since you first started making records. Yep, I'm older than you so I know what I'm talking about. Used to watch Texas Connection and laugh at all your hosting endeavors. Thanks for being there and letting us enjoy you.
I think I was in the audience at every performance you ever did on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe back in the day, JJ. From the first time I saw you on stage I felt like we had been friends forever. You are a treasure as far as I'm concerned!
Always think of this song when I'm in my 54chev truck first heard him in 76 in a bar in fort St John been listening to him ever since will always miss his voice
Here we call it "The Hondo Hill" So several (20 30?) years back I was out in Luckenbach having a few & picking some songs. I decided hit the Hondo hill & go for the record, imaginary as it might be. With a fair buzz I hit the top of the hill, radio blasting & eased my old giant suburban into neutral. A few minutes later started slowing down & got into the smaller hills still coasting along. Then I caught a smell like burning clutch or hot engine. The moral of the story is..... dont EVER put an auto in neutral with the cruise control on! LOLOLOL That old suburban was never the same.
I'm listening to Jerry Jeff Walker while traveling down memory way on google maps. I'd much rather be back there in south east New Mexico riding around with my grand pa. Just 2 desperado waiting on a train. I couldn't wait to get out of there but wish there was a way that I could go back to those days.
I was at this recording sometime in the late 80's. It was either during his birthday bash or later. Not sure. We took three chartered buses from Austin to Gruene Texas. Three buses each with a keg of Shiner beer and a person to serve it up to you. Fantabulous.
I laugh every time about leaning forward in the truck. I mean it's not as if I don't know what he's going to say. Heard it a million times now, still funny.
I first saw JJW at Billy Bob's Texas in 1982. I went by myself, and was lucky enough to get an odd front row seat at the box office. I got a little drunk, and before the show was over, JJW cussed me out from the stage. I felt like I had arrived. Then, in '84, I saw him again at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood. I wanted him to sing TOO OLD TO CHANGE, but he refused. I got a little drunk, and before the show was over, JJW cussed me out from the stage. Having been cussed out in two states probably isn't a record, but it was a lot of fun!
This song just makes me smile so BIG...My heart is about to burst! One of my favorite songs. More than others. Sigh.....LOVE it...Thank you for posting :)
Reminds me of growing up in south west Colorado. Pop would say get in the truck...I did not know if we were going for a couple hours or a couple days. And I never got bored with all the roads we travelled down. Miss my pop...and his old truck.
As a teenager in Michigan my buddy and I did this in my VW, ourbest trick was the coast down a winding road past grandpa's house into a drive back on the road, turning the car around to face the other way then back down the hill to park in front of the house with my buddy .The car was not running for about one mile during those maneuvers. It was all by inertia and using higher grades against lower ones. Latter we tried that with the family station wagon and almost got killed I failed to realize on that winding road where the VW steering did not lock with the key out GM station wagons DID! It did boost our adrenaline for the hello's as the keys where out from the top of the hill but we discovered the locking issue about two hundred yards from a 20 foot drop off with trees, swamp and a slow 90 degree bend in the road made for some excitement in the car! My buddy helped by shouting out obvious instructions like "put the key back in" as I I fumbled the keys back into the ignition and cranked the wheel just in-time to make the turn! We were so glad to see my grandma and grandpa and us in one piece with no damage done to dad's car! As a teenager you always think about the damage you do to dad's car!
One of my friends had a '71 Chevy Nova that you could take the key out of the switch while in was still motion. Someone had modified the steering column before my buddy bought it. I was driving it one afternoon, and my buddy pulled out the key, and like your dad's wagon, it locked the steering wheel!! He finally got the key back in, just as we were starting over into the side ditch, with a 5 to 10 ft drop off. I floored it, and got it to spin out, and back onto the roadway. We left black marks all over the road, and he wanted to ride back up there to see 'em. I had a '69 Ford Mustang, and started to get into it to go back to see what we did, and my buddy said "let's take his Nova back up there, and I said that I wasn't going anywhere in that death trap", lol!!!
I _LOVE_ my old 1969 Chevy 6 Banger stepside pickup ! . My brother and I drove it across America , only took me 1/2 case of oil but never broke down nor overheated.... -Nate
caught him the first time when he opened the Ritz concert hall in Corpus Christi he had Hondo Crouch with him and was great...became my favorite artist
