Jerry Reed is one of the best guitarists AND entertainers of all time. You can tell he's having a blast, and that it's genuine. To see him and Glen Campbell, pickin and grinnin on a summer day on the lake, surrounded by a huge crowd... now that's my idea of heaven. Forgive me for sounding cliche, but it really doesn't get any better than this.
So right about the moment they were having there. Jerry Reed is about as pure as it gets also. His vibrant personality comes out no matter what he was doing. Makes goose bumps watching him entertain. He was of course a genius on the guitar.
I agree. Jerry Reed will go down in history as the most underrated musician, actor, and entertainer of all time. He's clearly a legendary guitarist and singer that too many may only know him as merely the Truck driver in Smokey and the Bandit.
that was back when shorts were shorts. Seems like they go to your knees now (and have for over 30 years). It's okay, I can still make my own cut off jeans. dgt
Wendell , this song was written by a sweet man who used to live down the street from me, he was black....his name was Allen Toussaint...Youre in good company
we're so lucky. we're lucky this was recorded all those years ago, we're lucky it was uploaded 12 years ago, and we're damn lucky that these two once walked this earth and blessed us with their beautiful music for all time.
I'm a brit who has travelled across middle and southern US states and this song encapsulates how beautiful a country you have, long balmy nights with baseball, BBQs and good bluegrass music.
I'm glad you got to see America in her prime, but I'd dare to say she would look different to you now. Sure, there are remnants of southern heritage with a laid back attitude and lifestyle, but those are fading fast. Glad you enjoyed your time here.
Great performance of one of Glen's best. This was Jerry Reed and Special Friends, a celebrity picnic and concert at Hermitage Landing in Nashville. The year is 1982.
what a great year: I was 20, went through Airborne School, had a 32" waist, went back to my college in fall semester of 82 and got there 2 days early - and went over to see Officer and a Gentleman in local theater.
mikser I THINK THAT JERRY REED LOOKED AWESOME IN HIS OUTFIT. I LOVE JERRY REEDS BRITE YELLOW FISHINGI HAT. GLENN Campbell WAS ALSO AN AWESOME GUITAR PICKER. JERRY REED TOUGHT GLEN HOW TO PLAY ONE LICK ON IS GUITAR. AWESOME SONG SOUTHERN NIGHTS. TWO AWESOME GUITAR PICKERS. N TWO AWESOME FRIENDS. RAD SHORTS ON GLENN CAMPBELL. THEY LOOK TO TIGHT ON HIM. 😀😁RIP TO JERRY REED.
she was SO hot with that perky little face and that jet black hair...and she'd cook you eggs. I don't know how she got that hot with Victor French as her dad, though!
I was 11.... still all arms and legs, muscles didn't come until later. It's amazing how familiar and carefree that scene (most 80s scenes) looked to me.
Glen and Jerry, wrote their own songs, played their own instruments, sang with their own voices, and were humble as hell. Are there any artists like this today?
@@peterobertson2086 Yeah, I'm about as big of a fan of Glen's as it gets but even I gotta admit he didn't write too many of his own songs, though when he did they were absolute BANGERS, Visions of Sugarplums, Love Is A Lonesome River, Valley of Death, Back In The Race, I could go on, he wrote so many amazing songs, so yeh, he definitely COULD write, he just didn't a lot. It's a shame too, I need more songs like Visions of Sugarplums in my life.
As a Brit (strong music tradition) I absolutely love listening to such talented American musicians. This style of music is just so happy, puts a smile on my face every time I hear it, no-one does it so well. Thank you Jerry, Glen and the USA, love from across the water
Yeah well the USA loves British musicians even more. Too many great British musicians to list ; of course the Beatles, Led Zepplin, The Who, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, can't even name all of the great bands, too many to list! In my opinion Paul McCartney is the greatest musician that ever lived and will always be the greatest musician of all time period. USA 🇺🇸 loves 🇬🇧 musicians!
It’s 38 years since this performance. Two massive talents. What I would do to go back in time to this exact moment and to be there. I wonder if the people sitting there realized they were watching history being created. Carefree, happy, and simpler times.
You sure about the timing? That would be 1983. The only thing I found with Jerry Reed and Glen Campbell together around that time is the The Glen Campbell Music Show which was done indoors on a stage, and from a screenshot, it looks like Glen had less grey in his beard compared to what he looks like when this was filmed.
I was thinking the same thing that would have been something real real special a gift from God to be there at that place and time. You know Reed was down there fishing that lake too!
This, and the time he played it’s live with Leon Russell for TV. Leon on keys, and it was amazing! Only thing I’d have done differently was make it a duet between Glenn & Leon. This is it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BTgAWd6V2Jo.html
@@GeorgiaOverdrive Perhaps but, Glen Campbell wasn't high WHEN he sang THIS ... his voice is too smooth, he's too relaxed but, MAYBE he did some lines AFTER his performance ;)
@@jamesbacon1776 Its not the performance per se it's the star power here. You have here 2 innovators and masters of guitar work in country music. Legends. Not to mention movie stars.
Jerry Reed was a tremendous picker! Legendary. Glenn Campbell was on a whole different level than anyone. A member of the wrecking crew that was responsible for 100''s of the biggest hits off all time.
I am French Malagasy Creole. In France we listen to rap, zouk, variety, rock, Roots, a lot of music from home but that guys... We should listen to it every week! They will eat it all week at my job! This is a real guy and the whole team accompanies him to perfection! I would have loved to be there so thank you for sharing this gem!! And the sound is impeccable. PS I used a translator 😉
I often see the term "underrated " here on YT...maybe because as youngsters we were more into Van Halen, and all the other shredders...maybe... To me Glenn was a Country Guy, who had a super young Girlfriend, and Jerry was the Snowman...but as maturity kicks in you start to see the light. As a guitar player you realize these 2 are not underrated....but the Benchmark...
TheReubenKincaid Precisely. It's funny... my Facebook status just yesterday said that the reason I play so much Van Halen is because playing Jerry Reed's stuff is too hard!
I got to see Jerry Reed perform in the parking lot of a small motel in a tiny town in Iowa back in the early 90's. Maybe 100 people in the parking lot and I was all of about 10 feet from him. He made picking look so easy and natural. Good times.
reno145 MY HUSBAND N I MEET JERRY REED IN PERSON IT WAS AWESOME.HIS CONCERT WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD. JERRY REED.GAVE A KISS ON MY CHEECK. THERE WILL NO ONE ELSE LIKE JERRY REED. WHAT A VERY HANDSOME MAN. HIS BAND MEMBERS. WERE VERY NICE TO US.HIS WIFE PRISCILLA REED WAS A VERY PRETTY LADY. JERRY REED WORE AWESOME CLOTHES.
That's what life's all about. Those spontaneous moments that can't be repeated, and in hindsight (even if you realize they're special at the time) you kind of smack yourself for not realizing HOW special they were. But still, yeah. Good times.
alex isaacs the guy who wrote it Allen Toussaint pretty much is a musical God, one of the greatest ever to come out of New Orleans. People don’t know this was a soul ballet that Glen covered into a country song, pretty cool.
+GeekBoy03 Yeah, I know. It's so fluid and loose, isn't it? I just love the way the banjo player digs in and makes and issue of it here and there. Just a fabulous performance!
Im Scottish and this song reminds me of an America that just doesnt seem to exist anymore. Looks like the golden years have passed. But i may be wrong its just a feeling i get when i watch things now thats happening to the way it used to be.
They truly lived in carefree times... those shorts are proof... what a setting for this amazing concert!? Oh man, I’m jealous of anyone who was there...
Such a beautiful setting and version ...love it at 1:27 when Glen yells out "Remember your lick" and Jerry replies "No" thats the way so many of us muso's roll R.I.P Jerry
Except that Mr. Toussaint's rendition of his song was smooth and melodic and didn't really contain the Dixieland whimsy you referred to. In all honesty, I like Allen Toussaint's version a lot, but I *LOVE* Glen's version. The Dixieland Whimsy (outstanding description, BTW) is what speaks to me. Another song he sped up was "Galveston." Jimmy Webb's version was slower and more somber in tone. I don't think Mr. Toussaint or Mr. Webb had a problem with Glen's tweaking of their songs. He made them the $ucce$$e$ they became. For the record, "Southern Nights" is my favorite of Glen Campbell's hits. This is my favorite version of this song.
The highlight for me on "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Comedy Hour" was whenever Jerry Reed stopped by. It was his appearances that led to his own summer replacement series. Burt Reynolds was a fan of Jerry's music and was surprised at how funny Jerry was. It's said that the summer replacement show convinced Burt to cast Jerry in "W.W. and the Dixie Dance Kings". And the rest, as they say, is history.
Just imagine the energy in that place, an atmosphere of pure love for life, music, family, friends and the SOUTH! Wouldn’t trade my southern upbringing for anything in the world.
Look at Glenn rockin those daisy dukes! I don’t think they make men this confident anymore 😂😂 one of my favorite songs 🙌🏽 “feels so good, feels so good if I can wish I could stop this world from the fighting da dada da da.....” 🎶🎶
What can I say when you have two Master musicians on one stage together this is what happens you can't ask for better. May God rest the souls of these two gentlemen.
Glen's joy and spirit and voice and energy are so free and easy and BEAUTIFUL....!!! God, this man was so alive and so in the zone! So gifted and so damned gorgeous....!!!! I can't stop crying from the beauty!!!
The two of them together is simply magical. The swagger of Jerry, the virtuoso that's Glen--when they got together there was truly nothing like it. You can always see Jerry complimenting Glen and taking second chair, and Glen always loving playing with Jerry by the expression on his face. Damn that's good.
Glen Campbell one of the finest musicians in any genre. I grew up listening to wonderful songs such as Galveston, Rhinestone Cowboy and of course Southern Nights. Thank you Glen it was a great privilege. My condolences to your family and may you rest in peace.
The lilt of the song does indeed give one a view that nights down in the summer areas of the South have a musical quality. It is uplifting and in NC, Fla. I have experienced them and now at 81 I still remember tho I live now in the soviet republic of Ca
I remember when I was kid back 70’s when I first started to love hearing Glenn Campbell with Rhinestone Cowboy and then Southern Nights. He went to Heaven but he is still with us with his music.
I have a Jerry and Elvis story, maybe you've heard it already. In 1967 (or maybe '68) Elvis was doing a cover of Jerry's "Guitar Man", but none of the studio guitarists could duplicate Jerry's guitar lick. Someone finally suggested contacting Jerry himself to see if he would play it on Presley's recording. Jerry agreed to do it. He and Elvis got along famously. Jerry later remarked that Elvis "was the prettiest man I ever met!"
