There was an opportunity missed I think, in a project such as 'Miss Sloane'. In the version one point zero of feminism or empowerment of females in careers - there was a tendency to make it into a zero-sum game. I.e. That in order for the female to advance at all, it was necessary for the chess pieces of the opposing color, to be felled like one does with the chess pieces on a board. That serves those individuals in the feminism one point zero phase quite well, because that was the battle that needed to be waged. It was a chess game type of problem.
What we see however, today in feminism two point zero, is a different thing. Often, the females who work in management roles now, or leading roles, are busy trying to wage the feminism one point zero battle, when in reality, that's not what is going on out there today. It's a different battle, where one doesn't have to knocked down the chess pieces, i.e. extract opposition of the opposing color, out of the equation in order to get anywhere.
That is, it's moved away from being a chess game in certain industries, to something else. However, what you do witness in the real world today, are female executives who try to climb the ladder, using 'one point zero' tactics, often find themselves reaching the top of an organization, with no male employees of the right calibre around them at all, who could help to empower them even more. Because, in deployment of the 'one point zero' tactic, they've effectively eliminated half of their organization, or some of the best part of that organization. So the organization, is only standing on one leg as it were, and that's an impediment in today's competitive corporate environment.
What one is trying to do with one's fellow employees today, is not to play a chess game, but more of a cooperation between all of the different colored species. I don't know what the analogy for that would be, in terms of a board game, but that's what the game is more like today. The opportunity in 'Miss Sloane' was to tell that story, of the female boss who makes it to the top, waging the war that was yesterday's war, instead of the one that is today's battle, and thereby ends up getting defeated. That's a movie that hasn't been made as yet, but it's the one that would be more reflective of real female business challenges today, if the truth may be known.
Summarized, instead of a movie, where the non-female is the enemy, a movie where the female is the female's own worst enemy. Ironically. Who could make it up?
I'll give the community in the film world, one quick example here. It may assist Jonathan Perera, Jessica or whomever is actively working on trying to breathe life into a modern tale all about female empowerment. I came across a power female executive recently, who had watched every Sandra Bullock movie ever made, and decided to become that person in real life. There was a lot of feminism 'one point zero' in movies like 'The Proposal'. However, you take what is in 'The Proposal' and apply that in a real situation, and it doesn't have any happy ending, that ends up in Alaska somewhere. It ends up with a lot of unnecessary carnage on the male side, in order so that someone can pretend to cute, and cuddly and adorable like Bullock's character in the fictional movie. What is it called? Life imitating art?
