I love Jessica Jones. The characters are just great and it's just diffrent. A superhero story that isn't just action, that's rare these days. Also I just loved David Tennant as Kilgrave. Probably the best Marvel villain yet (sorry Loki) and the more serious roles suit him much better than the Doctor (sorry Tenny.) PS: Nice hairstyle. Nice cosplay. Nice Kilgrave impression (JESSICAAAA!) And yes, I touched my forehead.

Kyle, ear plugs only deaden the sound, they don't block it entirely. You'd need headphones or earplugs and really loud music to effectively block Killgrave's voice. And I did touch my forehead. And here's something I never did figure out: if Killgrave says something to someone in English but that person doesn't speak a word of English and Killgrave doesn't speak a word of their language, does his power still affect them? Or does the virus only work when the subject understands the command? Not really a science question, but it's something I would like answered.
@Sangerino
@Sangerino 8 лет назад
I'm guessing his powers still work as he is in control with the pheromones rather than just using language. Without the pheromones then he's just a normal person.
@Nerdist
@Nerdist 8 лет назад
+Rami Ungar Ooooh very good question re: languages. Is there an instance of Kilgrave speaking a non-English language in the comics, maybe?

I ask because if I had his powers, the first thing I'd do is go on a pleasure trip to every country I've ever wanted to visit for free.

Rami Ungar In the comics, Kilgrave got bored of trying to conquer the world and just decided to live his life out peacefully basically doing what you would do.

so my friend and i were talking, and we stumbled across the conversation topic of brains somehow, somehow from there i ended up looking up what animals don't have brains, according to what i've found most insects don't actually have brains, they have,...basically like,...protobrains, or very rudimentary early evolutionary forms of brains or something, so stuff like cordyceps, and the other insect stuff i would say is a bad example because i'd argue there's a big difference between insect,...protobrain things, and the more advanced brains of more complex organisms.
@sariahmoody552
@sariahmoody552 8 лет назад
+RDeathmark Insects have a neural ganglia(some insects have more than one of these). They are basically just a bunch neurons grouped together decipher the different stimuli the insect will encounter. Neural ganglia aren't as complex as a human brain, but the cell membranes are similar to our own neurons and react to similar chemicals. Almost any foreign thing(virus, chemical, parasite etc.) that can pass the blood brain barrier in humans can cause changes in many of our behaviors.
@swedneck
@swedneck 8 лет назад
+sariah moody The thing is though, they can only affect basic things like general mood and hunger. There's no chemical or virus that can make you want to play fallout 3 exactly 2 and a half hours per day while eating a bar of chocolate.
@sariahmoody552
@sariahmoody552 8 лет назад
I wish there was. Then at least I would have an excuse when I do it. lol There are chemicals, proteins etc. that can make one hallucinate and/or change ones perception of their surroundings. Its actually not too far of a logical leap to say that there are chemicals that can actually change the degree to which a persons actions are compliant with a given request. a combination of these two things could change behaviors exceptionally. At any rate, I think all the video is saying is that the phenomena could be more likely to happen than we would think off hand.

That last thing in the video which talked about parasites in rats and subsequently cats being linked to common mental disorders could simply be the fact that many people who own cats suffer from social issues, which usually make a person more susceptible to illness through the relation of different areas of health.

There is no scientific evidence that humans have pheromones. Some other animals do, but not all of them, including us. The idea was concocted by a perfume company so they could patent certain fragrances. The virus from the show makes more sense.
@KitsyX
@KitsyX 8 лет назад
+Osiris Malkovich But many super heroes and villains have abilities and characteristics that normal people wouldn't have... The important part is how much pheromones can affect humans, not if he could have pheromones or not... At least I think so lol
@bcn1gh7h4wk
@bcn1gh7h4wk 8 лет назад
+Osiris Malkovich we do have, and they do affect us... only not as strongly as other mammals, mainly because our olfatory system is not that developed. wouldn't make sense to sell a product that transmits an odor message, when nobody can actually smell it.
@Mallory-Malkovich
@Mallory-Malkovich 8 лет назад
onehandyguy You're right, it wouldn't make any sense, assuming the merchant is honest. But since when has a product not doing what it's advertised to do stopped people from selling it? Or stopped the gullible from buying it? There is no evidence that humans produce pheromones. It was made up years ago to sell scented water.
@swedneck
@swedneck 8 лет назад
+Osiris Malkovich Since people are attracted to how others smell (without any perfume) you are per the definition of the word pheromone wrong. We do emit chemichals that influence others, namely sweat, oils, and other things that smell differently depending on person.
@Mallory-Malkovich
@Mallory-Malkovich 8 лет назад
Tim Stahel That's not what pheromone means. Liking the smell of someone doesn't mean you are smelling pheromones. Pheromones are specific chemical secretions that provoke specific behavior in others. Secretions that humans do not produce.

Though i was curious HOW this works. How do these chemicals force a specimen to listen. Is it just targeting parts of the brain to increase suggestion or something else? Any answer would be great. one thing I thought was really interesting in Jessica Jones was when Kilgrave was in the tank and Jerry was watching him. As she paced the room he watched her pattern and began to do the same. soon becoming synchronized. then when Jessica walks in he first says "Finally" then Jerry says "Finally" right after Kilgrave. I think this is when he got into her head.
@fmitchell238a
@fmitchell238a 8 лет назад
Thanks for this, Kyle. Having *finally* just seen Jessica Jones, though, the one problem I did have was why victims just obeyed Kilgrave. (I mean, besides viruses being the 21st century equivalent of "chemicals" or radiation.) Did the virus somehow select for Kilgrave's voice alone? If you could synthesize Kilgrave's voice, could you command someone under Kilgrave's influence? Why would [SPOILER]ing Kilgrave temporarily suspend his abilities? Then again, I might as well ask how a 5'7'' rail thin woman can generate enough force to break locks without crippling her hands or toss a man twice her size across a room without toppling in the opposite direction.

Free will is already a battle between the cortex and reward center of the brain. You can see evidence of this just by playing a game like Persona. People order their avatar to behave differently from how they themselves behave in real life. That's because people decide how their avatar behaves, but with their own behavior they have to battle the reward center, which tries to convince them to do things that yield pleasure right now instead of planning for the future.

Most agree for a single story house 200 pounds per square foot. 275 per square foot for two story and 375 for three story houses. With this we find for a 670 square foot single floor house you get 134,000 pounds or approximately 60,781,378 grams. Assuming the 1 to 1 gram to liter ratio holds perfectly true under all variables then you need that amount or again 60,781,378 liters worth of helium. In other words you would need 25 balloons the size of olympic swimming pools to lift a small one bedroom apartment/ house. Due note this is on the very low side. There's a high chance your house would require far more helium to lift it. Also real world variables like temperature elevation wind etc will be need to be accounted for.
@1217BC
@1217BC 6 лет назад
At a house weighing 120000 pounds,(rough average based on house movers estimates) not counting the foundation, you would need 54,431,084.4 liters of helium. That would be 6048 9000 liter tanks of helium (the big tanks like in Jaws). Call it 6050 to account for the weight of the balloons themselves. At about $300 US per tank, that would be $1,815,000. That's not counting the costs in balloons and high tensile strength string. You might be able to get bulk rates, but still, probably cheaper to build a new house where ever you're moving to.
@damienkakoschke3099

oh & a special effects company, Corridoor Crew looked at the balloons from Up thing. Worked out, would need to be about 10 times as many baloons (because of course, they wanted to represent it visually, worth a look, think you'd like it). :)

but Killgraves mind control doesn't work over electronic devices, as evident when he called Trish's show. Also it was one of the modifications Killgrave was working on, during the show. One solution I came up with for how to deal with Killgrave would be to have headphones hooked up to microphones, so everything you hear is run through a digital filter, ie, no mind control.

IIRC Toxoplasma is an interesting case... if a cat eats an infected rodent (as it affects more than just mice and rats, they are just the most common vector), it will begin reproducing in the cat's intestines and eventually get pooed out. It takes about a day for it to become active and able to infect other beings at that point. So if you have an outdoor cat who uses a litter box, and are paranoid of TG, then clean the litterbox fast and wash your hands to be safe :P Regardless, in non-rodent/feline subjects Toxoplasma is usually incredibly harmless and has no effect, never really passing in to the bloodstream, and the few times it does, it tends to lie dormant. Recently though, as Kyle states, there have been studies that have linked aggressive behaviours becoming exaggerated in a small number of Toxoplasma infected individuals. Officially, according to the CDC and WHO however, it is still a relative non-concern for humans.

This by far the creepiest episode ever, especially the part of the worm leaving that bug. But it was also very interesting. Keep it up Kyle. Why? Because Science.

I didn't touch my forehead and still haven't but it should be noted that the center of my forehead is now crazy itchy for no apparent reason. How does that figure in to your statistic?

After they revealed in the series that it was a virus I also asked myself does language play any part in it. What other way could Killgrave relay the message to the virus other than verbally?

It is absolutely not science but comments by Kyle Hill brought back a memory from the movie, MIB (1997) where the last interplanetary alien that K (Tommy Lee Jones) wanted to investigate was of insect origin. Kilgrave was the scariest villain I have seen. He is attractive, charismatic and utterly without empathy or compassion.

What Kyle said about the control part of the Purple Man's powers, it's surprisingly simple; lower the victim's inhibitions to the point that they will not question the commands. Having a fungal infectious agent that produces just the right chemical to block the prefrontal cortex, the part of the human brain responsible planning and fore thought and by extension inhebitions, with out hampering cognition would be the way I'd make Killgraved's powers. However, repeated reliance on only a few people would mean that those people would start building up an immune response to the infectious agent, leading to shorter windows for the commands to be carried out and/or more resistance to the commands. If this holds true, than that means that Jessica Jones, between her own powers and her previous exposure to Killgraved, would make her the perfect one to try and take him down.

I think Kilgrave's virus/chemicals simply makes the injected subject highly susceptible to his commands, inducting a trance-like state while likely inhibiting the part of their brain that relates to morality. This mental state may only react to certain vocal patterns and/or require a secondary chemical that he emits passively, which explains why subjects only responds to his commands and not just anyone's.

I spent a good minute or two debating with myself whether or not to close the video and watch a different one because I wasn't sure if I was now watching due to being mind controlled. So I closed, started another video, closed that and then came back her but skipped the intro. HA! You can't control me!

I touched my forehead. I was already feeling an itch before the video told me to touch my forehead, and was in the motion of scratching it. So either Kyle Hill already managed to tell me subconsciously prior to issuing the command, or he managed to put rearrange my memories after so I think it was my own thought initially. I really doubt it was coincidence. Kyle is a wizard.

OH MAN! So watching this after watching the episode about how Darth Vader's suit works makes me wonder a little bit if his suit doesn't help him with "Jedi Mind tricks." I mean I know The Force is what Jedis use to perform these tricks but certainly Darth Vader's suit would help with all other forms of mind control depending on his ability to adapt hearing within his suit. CRAZY!

One year while I was at camp, I saw a bug crawling around my bed so I killed it. A few minutes later, I saw what I now know to be a horsehair worm inching it's way out of the body. Still gives me the creeps.

theoretically the virus could simply make you more susceptible to suggestion, meaning that it changes the brain to interpret all auditory commands as hypnotic suggestions, or at least the ones with killgrave's voice signature.
@aydandoyle1633

Kyle, in the show its says that he emits a smell that makes you susceptible to suggestion. So therefore if you are talking over the phone or in this case through a video it would not work. (Now mind you I could be wrong and if I am, feel free to correct me)
