My personal take is that at the start of picking up an instrument, one should listen to lots of genre-specific music and try to focus your attention purely on that particular instrument. Once you're able to zone in on the bass sound specifically, you'll be able to start picking up what other players do much more easily. And perhaps somewhere down this journey, you'll be able to fit what you hear into the sound of the major scale just by listening Technique-wise, just practicing with a metronome and trying my best to keep an even volume across the various techniques has served me well over the years
