There are players on this team who are just not beneficial to the team as far as in the locker room. Paul Maurice took the high road, and Bowness was just more blunt. Whoever those players are, they have to go, regardless of their skill on the ice.
@rhye_guy7717

I'm not going to name names, but I would look at the players that accused past players for the toxic environment. Those past players have been long gone and the environment still exists.

@lincolnmaceachern2410 and this statement makes fans glad you're not the GM. You need to ask yourself why Paul Maurice left. Since you haven't been paying attention, Bowness has been complaining about the compete level since Xmas, but he can't force the guys to play.
@KreepCA
@KreepCA Год назад
@@lincolnmaceachern2410 Thank goodness for Bowness. And thank goodness he said what he said, representing the way Winnipeg Jets fans felt about the team in game 5 AND through most of the second half of the season. We already have Chevy to give us lip service and harmless, diplomatic, unaccountable statements. We needed SOMEONE in the organization (like Stastny did) to say it like it is. Looking away from very real problems for the sake of pride and reputation is something you see from Russian or North Korean dictators. We need a more modern approach to looking at and tackling the problems with this team, rather than continuing to pretend nothing is wrong.
@pomerlain8924
@pomerlain8924 Год назад
@@lincolnmaceachern2410 It's not an issue with Bowness. It's a player issue. Bowness just did what Paul Maurice didn't do in calling out the team publicly. Remember, people thought Paul Maurice was the issue holding the Jets back, and look at what he's doing now with Panthers, where all his players actually care and do heed his voice.

@pomerlain8924
@pomerlain8924 Год назад
That's because after 2018, instead of taking advantage of a possible championship window, Chevy and the front office reverted back to the status quo. They could have used the momentum of that great season to take some big swings and go after some missing pieces. I do believe Paul Stastny would have wanted to re-sign, but Chevy, as he usually does, decided to be cheap, instead of willing to spend a little. Imagine if he had a whole season to center the second line with Ehlers and Laine on his wings. Instead, the Jets let him walk and they had to go back to Bryan Little as the second-line center.

I feel there are too many Jets fans who think all they need is Hellebuyck to get hot and they're a contender. They have dysfunctional leadership and a core that isn't quite strong enough for a sustained push. They need a retool and probably need a couple of seasons to turn it around. Trade Scheifele and Wheeler....no-brainer, they are stale and need a change and the team needs them to leave in order to develop a stronger core. Probably need to accept picks and prospects in return, especially for Wheeler because of his contract. Teams won't give up an equal roster player to take that on. Maybe retain half for a couple seasons? So trade with a team that wants depth for a 2024 run and has picks/prospects to give, but is short on cap space. Hellebuyck however......do you trade him now, at his peak value? Because how does that help the retool 2-3 years down the road? you need to replace him with an equal goalie (not gonna happen) or be confident enough in your drafting and trading that you'll strengthen elsewhere enough that you can afford to trade him. Personally I'd trade him. This isn't a team that's about to become a contender, there are too many cracks now. Ehlers, Connor, Morrisey, Perfetti, Lambert, Lowry, these are players to build around. Even Dubois if he agrees to stay. Plus some other good prospects, they have drafted well imo. Sign a couple cheaper option goalies for next season and evaluate where the team REALLY is without Hellebuyck bailing them out. Then re-assess and decide who else to let go of. Trouble is my strategy could easily drag into a full rebuild so I'd want to act quickly, get all the above business done this summer and next summer, no later. Make those decisions quickly Don't leave any core players uncertain past 2024 offseason. Look to be a playoff team again in 2025/6. I think that's reasonbable and realistic.

I'm a Jets fans, and think all three (Wheeler, Scheifele, and Dubois) need to go. And since we only have them all for one more year, they need to be traded either this off season or around the deadline. We will also probably need to trade Hellebuyck since he will not want to wait for the team to develop if we trade for picks and prospects. One idea that I've heard recently is to trade Hellebuyck to LA for Byfield, and then see if we can trade a package including Scheifele to Boston for Swayman. Might not be possible, but that's the kind of thing I would like to see.
@Lavvvs

3:45 It's probably overreaching for an analogy but it reminds me a little of Pat Gillick during his time with the Toronto Blue Jays. Kevin is 12 years in with Winnipeg, which is around the same time in his Blue Jays tenure that Gillick moved away from his "Stand Pat" reputation & shook the Jays up big-time, leading to back-to-back World Series titles in '92/'93. Not saying that Cheveldayoff has the Jets in the same position those 1990 Jays were but the idea is basically: He's competent at his job but now the time is calling for something more exciting than competent.

For context, i am like THG where i have a favourite team (Habs) then a couple teams i root for strongly (Avs and Jets) like he does for Vancouver, Boston and Dallas respectively, so this is kinda like me speaking as a fan of the Jets. It may be controversial, but I think the Jets need a rebuild. Dubois made it clear hes not planning to stay in Winnipeg, Wheeler is getting old, and Schiefele has enough value the Jets could get a nice haul for him. Hellebuyck has stated he wants a Cup and the Jets (as constructed) are not a team that is built to go far, so trading the goalie for a respectable haul seems like the best option. I think you can rebuild this team around the batch of young players they do have (Perfetti, Connor, Ehlers, Morissey) and make them more competitive within 3 seasons but something needs to change. This team has been spinning its wheels since 2018 and clearly the team as is, just isnt working.

The Jets need to figure out their plans. Rebuild or retool, it sounds like a retool right now. The problem is that will limit return and likely create a situation like our hastily rebuilt defense. Not certain it's good enough to go far in the playoffs. It was impressive when it was done, much like the Tchachuk trade for Calgary. I would go rebuild route, but it'll be hard. Book is out on so many of our "assets". PLD let someone else deal with the problem of Montreal next year. It's a soap opera. He will likely never be that guy from that one playoff round so many years ago. PLD isn't consistent enough for the Jets needs. I think the return is all based on potential not actual which sucks as most GMs are too savvy. Wheeler because the players still see him as the leader, so you cannot build a new leadership core with him in the locker room. Anyone joining is going to defer to him, the player's interviews said as much. They stripped him of captaincy but numerous players said he was the captain. That means you won't have guys stepping up while he is there. Schieffle because he continues to ignore whatever coach he has backing him. He's a great student of the game but as a player he needs to be open to what the coach is asking of him. He's a certain type of player in his own words and unwilling to change it. Let him figure out that the stability offered by the Jets was not an opportunity you can just get anywhere. Again the return is still high here because teams still think they can fix attitude. Hellebuyck because he masks so many deficiencies on this team and his value is still very high. Again return is the name of the game, the Jets will need to find some goalie somewhere. Not overpay for him. The problem is this whole trade is for prospects and picks, not existing players.
@brandonreimer1041
@brandonreimer1041 Год назад
Wheeler needs to go to a contender Schieffle most teams would be happy to take him Dubois is probably our most valuable asset even if his point production isn’t as high as others. Just the way he plays he’s a brute and doesn’t care if you’re in the way he’ll go through and often make it work. Helle- probably leaves for greener pastures and I think the jets end up similar to many other teams with a tandem that you ride whoever’s playing better. If Chevy wants to keep a job there will be at least a news worthy change to the team. I’d say 2020 when they lost out against St. Louis should have been the year changes were made, at this point we’re beating a dead horse

This was a good team build on paper. I'm not sure who should've known that Scheifele would be a lunatic, or that Hellebuyck would fall apart when they finally got their chance, but it was someone in the war room's. On paper this is a very reliably contending team tho.
@blackenedmagic888
@blackenedmagic888 Год назад
I agree. At the beginning of the year, I had them fighting tooth and nail with Colorado for the Central Division title. Of course, you know what "on paper" gets you, right? In all honesty, given their collective talent, the Jets might be the most disappointing team in the NHL - and that's saying something when one considers a Leafs fan is saying this. At the beginning of the season they looked like the Jets I expected and then they imploded and just barely made the playoffs. I don't get it. How does a team as good as Winnipeg do this? Any answers or theories are welcome.
@pomerlain8924
@pomerlain8924 Год назад
@@blackenedmagic888 Early on the season, Hellebuyck's play and their OT prowess helped helped them to have a strong start. There was also the fact that they were dealing with a lot of injuries, and the guys that got called up actually bought into Bowness' system pretty well, and played hard every night. But once the regulars got back into the line-up, that's when the bad habits started manifesting again and they started sliding. It was also apparent that the team was top heavy. As the top 6 went, so did the Jets. Their bottom 6 was horrible. And the d-corp, outside of Morrissey, was average at best. And as Bowness alluded to in his press conference, every time the Jets played a top team or were challenged, they just wilted. I can't count the number of games that I saw where I knew the game was over as soon as they fell behind 2-0. We see so many teams keep fighting after being down 2-0, 3-0 or 4-0, to at least salvage a point. The Jets had none of that fight.

I think the Jets should first start the rebuilding process by firing Bowness and Chevy. Get guys that from the Pittsburgh Penguins personnel like Mike Velluci and Derek Clancey to help rebuild this team. The Penguins have had one the top front offices for the past 2 decades. They know what it takes to build a winning organization from the ground up. I know Clancey is with Canucks now, but I'd pay him whatever to get him to Winnipeg. I'd also would like from the Jets to draft Riley Heidt with their 19th pick. The man is a diamond in the rough and will be a big star in the future. He's the guy to build around moving forward.

The biggest change in "the core" that Winnipeg needs to make is moving on from Cheveldayoff. Chevy can make some good deals, but fails to recognize when things aren't working and is slow to move out players who aren't producing. Morrissey and Lowry need to be officially recognized as the leaders on the team. Wheeler is no longer able to play at the level that the Jets need and Scheifele refuses to. They both need to go. I think Connor and Ehlers will become better with Blake and Mark out of the way. Dubois is probably leaving. I hope they figure out how to keep Jonsson-Fjallby as he is a good fit for the team and deserves more ice time.

Trade Helley for a goalie needing a second chance and a good pick. There’s been good goalies that benefitted from a change, Samsonov comes to mind, and Woll for example looks ready too. There’s a few others worth taking a chance on, but the key is to get a draft pick high enough where that player is 1-2 years away from a spot.

If you build a winning culture, guys will want to play in those cities. Look at Edmonton. The problem is too many of these Canadian teams are failed by bad GMs. It's been reported that Tkachuk wanted to stay in Calgary long-term after his first RFA deal in 2019, but the front office thought it prudent to prioritize Michael Frolik and just gave Tkachuk a bridge deal. And in the case of Trouba, his situation was more complicated, as his girlfriend, now wife, was a medical resident in the states. So they could hardly see each other.

KFC is too streaky and Perfetti is just too soft for the NHL. Get back LOTS of CAP Space, assets, younger players, picks, prospects, etc. Let guys like Kuhlman, AJF, Appleton, and Stanley just go, because you aren't getting anything for them. Optional guys to keep are Stenlund and Gus. Then go and get VEJMELKA! Bring up some youth, Moose, etc.... Use the Cap space to get some younger players that need a chance. Start getting the last couple of years draft pick kids onto the Moose and up to the Jets in the next year or 2. So... a rebuild on the fly.
