I used the stem and stalk. chop it up. boiling it, reducing to 1/2. and let it sit over night, then drain it, and can it in a pressure canner. 30 minutes for pints and 35 minutes for quarts at 10 # pressure. just like vegetable broth. I have used 3 year old jewel weed liquid and it still is good. I have to remember to wear long sleeves and pants. wash my clothes and gloves and takes a shower. then put on the jewel weed. I get it very bad. once I forgot. had it terrible. used the jewel weed a few days later and the rash did go away... but I had swollen arms and felt very sick. had to take prednoisone and antibiotics because it went through my skin and into my system. it sucks. I make it every year and use it in may because thats when the poison ivy is out and the jewel weed hasn't grown yet. I also wait to pick it after the seed pods are spent so they will regrow. I get it that bad. this stuff works for me. I'm grateful
Can you tell me if other impatiens family plants have the same poison ivy relieving juices such as himalayan balsam, or the taller impatiens and even the garden shade annuals?

The chemical that binds with the poison ivy oil to neutralize it is called urushiol. I use a product that includes jewel weed to treat poison ivy, oak, etc. It is called Technu, available in US on the shelf at CVS. I am happy to add that I also got a very bad rash from the tree version that secrets the poison ivy oil in Mexico and it worked wonderfully!!
