Jewelweed Juiciness: Prevent Poison Ivy Rash (New Video Lesson)
This wild Native American annual, scientifically called Impatiens pallida, helps us to keep poison ivy from creating a rash on our skin. Learn to ID, harvest, and use this soothing, astringent, cooling friend.
The juice and fresh mash of jewelweed are applied topically to prevent the skin from binding with urushiol, the irritating substance found in poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
The species of jewelweed (Impatiens pallida) featured in this video lesson is known as pale jewelweed and pale touch-me-not, and it produces light yellow flowers. Its closely related, not-pale cousin, Impatiens capensis, is used similarly, and has orange flowers with spots-giving rise to its other common name spotted touch-me-not.
Look for jewelweed in damp, moist soil, in part sun to shade, in woodlands, water edges, bogs, moist gardens, and damp meadows.
Range: Eastern N. America: Newfoundland to Saskatchewan, south to Georgia west to Kansas.
Dimensions: Height: 2-6 ft.; Width: 2-3 ft.

I have used jewelweed for years! It works great! My aunt makes a salve by steeping a LOT of the leaves in hot olive oil, running out through a sieve, then adding melted beeswax so it will set, then pouring into small, pocket-sized jars (like lip-balm jars) or empty "Chap Stick" tubes. I ALWAYS keep one in my pocket while hiking/camping! (Another way to check if it's Jewelweed: put a drop of water on the leaves. It'll bead up like on a newly waxed car!) New subscriber here btw. I've watched your video on Hygrophorous Milkcaps and this one....very informative!

Last year I made a jewelweed plantain salve that worked miracles on a neighbor's poison ivy rash. His wife forced him to use it because he had no confidence in a homemade remedy. Its fast action took him by surprise and I am so pleased to have opened his mind to the importance of herbal remedies, especially in these times. Thank you Dina for giving us the golden nuggets of information.

Thanks so much. I made a tincture of jewelweed for the first time this year and wondered if it would help with the rash. I see it won’t and am wondering if you have a video on what to use once you have the rash. Thank you!

Hello Melissa, since you've already made the tincture, I would try it and see (some folks respond well to it). But one of my preferred herbs for pi rashes is Yellow Giant Hyssop. More about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0h_Mhg4WyB8.html

Dina...as a person who gets PI constantly all summer long...this is my 1st summer using the jewellweed method you described here...plus I do make a concoction with vodka that keeps for awhile and I can use it as need be.....I noticed you said you have a better method for when the rash does appear, could you do a video on that when you get time? I received my log in information from your class but haven't had the chance yet to take the course but I can't wait....thanks for all your videos, they truly do help a ton....

Thank you for signing up for the course! And thank you for appreciating these videos. To your question, when a rash appears I use different herbs like osha and Agastache nepetoides. Hoping but not sure if we will get to this as a video lesson...

Hi Dina, would this be beneficial as a spray for mosquito or chigger bites? I’ve heard that one should infuse it in witch hazel.
@DinaFalconi
@DinaFalconi 5 месяцев назад
Hello Joanna, I've not used it as a spray for mosquito or chiggers bites, so can't say, But what I would suggest for bites like this is plantain: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w0xD42y_fr4.html

Thank you for the useful lesson. I have lots of poison ivy in my woods, but I've been careful when pulling it, so I'm not sure if I'm allergic to urushiol. Does the Impatiens Balfourii have the same properties? I planted some this year for the beautiful orchid-like pink-purple flowers it's supposed to have -- it hasn't bloomed yet.
@DinaFalconi
@DinaFalconi 4 года назад
Thank you for watching the lesson. Good question, I have not hear of Impatiens balfourii having the same properties as I. pallida and I. capensis. I will look into it. Please let me know what you learn too.
