I think the point is that if you've let it get to the point where it's exiled it's already too late. So you have to respond before you know what it does/is
She can ABSOLUTELY get it. And by 'it' I of course mean every single counterspell, removal spell, and boardwipe across three other players all aimed directly at her cute face like she's stuck at the end scene of the anime your parents would be INCREDIBLY disappointed in you for watching.
Or the Tenth Doctor's ability to pay 7 to trigger the removal of time counters from your suspended permanents three times, whoopsie-daisy it's showing up next turn, or even _right now_ if you have Rousing Refrain in exile and an opponent with at least 7 cards in hand
I have a Ninth Doctor and Clara Oswald deck that is built entirely around getting as many upkeeps as possible. My current record is 6. This card goes HARD in that deck, as do all of the other suspend cards, because if they don't do something about me in a single turn rotation, whatever I suspended is absolutely getting played my very next turn lol
Building Ninth Doctor with Graham O'Brien and putting Alaundo, the Seer in it would let you go so many weird and wacky things out onto the field absurdly fast and get a bunch of food counters for it. Throw in a Ferropede for extra counter removal and you can do some serious cheating really fast
I know a guy who played a deck with her that wasn't trying to cheat out giant BS like Eldrazi, but his list was even worse than what you are describing. His deck wasn't intended to drop bombs--it was intended to rapidly dump his hand with ability cost reduction (eg. Training Grounds) and then Wheel the table. So he would discard basically nothing to the Wheel effects, as everything he cared about was in exile, and would just power through on value. I only remember his deck so vividly because he actually ended a game once with a free-cast Thousand Year Storm + Expropriate combo that caused the rest of us to just scoop it up and start a new game, rather than even attempt to figure out what that looks like when it fully resolves.
Oh this is light work compared to the shenanagins I get up with her. Eye of the Storm + Thousand year Storm + Time Spiral It's not meant to win, it's meant to make the stack unsolvable so we all agree to a tie.
I think just the funniest combo that could be done there is just world fire and something like ember rain(to force a table wide tie) or a cheap ping for one on each opponent
@@iamtigra I play this kind of mess with Myra and get all of my possibility storm/eye of the storm/hive mind giggles with rolling d6s to try and visit disneyland every turn. It has wincons, (grapeshot, guttersnipe, Fiery inscription) that tend to end the game very quickly once I see them, but there are a lot of draw spells that need to see the light of day before either of those turn up.
@@zombieslayer2016it does, because you also have to cast the card. I had a Joihra deck once with a board wipe suspended, I immediately became public enemy number one and I couldn’t say I just won’t cast it I had to.
Right, but the point is they can't see your hand, and when you suspend it, it's too late, it's coming. So the only safe play is to not let you suspend anything
As with every Izzet commander, the trick is to wait an extra turn before playing it so you get enough mana to also play Clout of the dominus and have a good laugh.
This gal is easily one of my favorite build-arounds ever, because I’d recently become a huge Doctor who fan when Time Spiral released, so getting to build a temporal shenanigans/storm deck felt great.
@@40KfrogTime travel is generic enough of a keyword that it could appear outside of the Doctor Who decks. Not as likely as say, Squad… but it’s not out of the picture entirely.

Back in the early days of EDH, when things were basically the wild west, Jhoira was one of the baddest desperados to mosey into town. Nowadays, people are more on the lookout for bullshit outta nowhere, so people run more instant-speed interaction, and people are more likely to hold mana up for it. No longer are you able to get away with dropping Jhoira turn 3, and have her actually stick around. That's a good thing, because her cost lets you perfectly curve casting her into activating her ability twice next turn if undisrupted. And, in my experience, if Jhoira's controller activates her twice, the two cards that get suspended are always either Apocalypse and Kozilek the Butcher of Truth or Decree of Annihilation and Ulamog the Infinite Gyre. Every fucking time.
Jhoira was my first ever Commander, i absolutely did load out my 99 with crazy chaos causing sorceries, bigass demons and leviathans and spent every turn from 3 onward resummoning jhoira and watching everyone else have actual turns.
She was one of my first commanders I made. Can confirm. If you play her, then you better have a force of will with another blue card in hand OR have two Mana open to immediately suspend something the moment they try to kill her. She will not last and you will not last against the table.
Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain and Jhoira, Ageless Innovator seem more terrifying because the former is card draw on a cast trigger and the latter is free artifact spells on a stick.
as a weatherlight captain player, Youll most likely see a cheerio style storm deck that kills you anywhere from turns 2-5 depending on how tuned it is.
If you want a similar option with a bit more oomph behind it, check out the new Dr. Who universes beyond cards. The 10th Doctor specifically is fantastic at doing similar shit, but instead of suspending from your hand it suspends the top card of your library for free. Also gets to run a 2nd commander for access to white or green on top of Izzet, which is very nice. And of course you run Jhoira in the 99 (well, 98).
Shout out to Jhoira’s second card for being the first URtifact commander. I was waiting for one of those for forever. Then I built her and it sucked so I stopped. Not her fault, I’m just bad
I'm telling you my brother in magic, Zedruu the Great-hearted has the potential to deliver such a fu that only a goat man can do. The freedom that you can restrict by using the freedom colors is God's blessing aside from thick thighs with low standards. You can drop both orbs while drawing yourself to death for free, infinite reflections combos galore, unblockable monks, I once ran a dragon land board wipe deck by using the GOAT monk. Cruelty knows no bounds when the Freedom Goat comes knocking.
My rule for Jhoira is that she costs 5 not 3, just because you need the Counter mana up or the instant activation mana if she hits. We're gonna suspend the Red Decree now.
One of my first decks, love her so much! Paradox Haze does so much work and chucked in a Show and Tell just to keep things fresh. This is too mean, so I don't play it, but suspending worldfire and any meatball of a creature puts an endgame timer over all players' heads, since when they come down, you can order the triggers such that Worldfire comes out first, so no permanents except the meatball. And yeah, suspended cards are face up, so everybody knows what you're up to.
I made a deck with Jhoira and... took it apart after one of my nephews played Atraxa, and kept all of my suspended stuff there forever. Also... this is the second video I have asked for Marchesa the Black Rose.
@@SadinarYeah, I think Clockspinning is one of the only cards that can even interact with counters on exiled cards. If effects like proliferate could do it then I think strong suspend cards like Wheel of Fate wouldn't get played as much
@@cetitanenthusiast776 The new wave of Dr Who cards with "time travel" effects let you interact with your own suspended cards, but not other players. Same with Jhoira's Timebug. Only other card I know that could actually delay someone else's card is Timecrafting, but unless you've got a way to recycle that one instant over and over it'll only slow one thing.

But there are actually a surprising number of cards that can affect specifically time counters on other exiled cards, usually if the affected card is suspended. Only four of these can affect your opponent's suspended cards though. Notes in parentheses are not exhaustive. Alaundo the Seer (doesn't care about suspend; removes from all you own) Amy Pond (remove only; suspended card you own) Dust of Moments (affects all suspended cards) Jhoira's Timebug (target suspended card you own) Shivan Sand-Mage (any target suspended card) Timebender (any target suspended card) Timecrafting (any target suspended card) Plus any of the 9 cards with Time Travel from the Doctor Who Commander set which is like Proliferate mixed with Clockspinning, specifically for permanents you control and/or suspended cards you own with time counters, to either give or remove a time counter.
Is Suspend Face-Up or Face-Down? Suspend is a face-up mechanic. The list of cards in exile is available to all players unless explicitly mentioned otherwise. The suspend card is revealed when put into exile and players can respond to the time counter removal trigger every upkeep.
Made an entire 60 card around her. Playsets of cards like Fire Charm, Timecrafting, Dust of Moments, and more all work extremely well to just crap out a Blightsteel or Emrakul instantly. Sol Talismans pair well to allow an easy use of her ability once she's out. Slam it before your turn, take off a counter, then play one or two cards to power out Aeons Torn for 15/15 hastey boi that swings twice with the extra turn. Also Annihilator 6. Also Blightsteel. I've crushed people with this.

Got a buddy who has a Jhoira deck. The main thing you can't let them do is slap down 4 or 5 cards into suspend out of nowhere. Because allllll that shit? It's coming. And once again I humbly request a roast of my boi Tayam and/or my gurl Horobi. Thank you sir =]
Engaging in the Algorithm by posting but: Suspend as a mechanic is Face-Up due to the rules of cards when exiled are exiled face up unless it explicitly says otherwise on the source. Other updates to consider with Suspend (and why to not allow this bad bitch to resolve) Suspend is now "When the last time counter is removed from this card, if it's exiled, cast it without paying it's casting cost. If you cast a creature spell this way it gains haste until you lose control of that creature." The cast nuance (circa the last major comprehensive rules update) means a whole lot more triggers now happen when the suspend card pops.
I have played her and typically what it looks like when she hits the battlefield. "I suspend this ramp spell and this 5/5 creature" "Oh no, he's starting to suspend things. I swing out with all 20 of my tokens at you. Due to lords and enchantments, they're all 5/5s"
She’s half blue. As the first commander deck I made I’m not asking when I play her deck. And you will ask me nicely if your spell resolves every time you cast, or else you get the red half.
She is a key piece in my all time favorite modern deck. After switching to Commander, it's the only modern deck still assembled. It's a Worldfire time bomb.
I just put a bunch of random things on layaway. It's not the suspended cards you need to worry about. It's the Obliterate or Worldfire chilling in my hand that's the problem. Or the extra turn spells I've been saving. Those might be an issue as well.
my favourite part about playing Jhoira is that her ability just Doesn't Matter Much after like turn 7 unless you miss land drops or got some really beefy boys in your deck
Pro tip for any potential committers of suspend based war crimes, most of the time the way you want to play this commander is not by playing it turn 3. You want to wait to have 5 mana to be able to cast Jhoira and suspend in the same turn to play around removal
The nuts part is that because its just a mana ability all you have to do is hold up two extra pips of whatever while casting her and if no one saved their counterspell you get to activate it.
heres what happens when you let a Jhoira of the Ghitu resolve and not die immediately. Turn 4: play land, suspend decree of annihilation. then suspend literately any big dumb idiot they have in hand.
You can see what the suspend is AFTER they suspend it. You're probably dead if you don't prevent them from suspending more cards, because it's going to be some 10 mana bullshit that ends the game 4 turns from now.
You never forget your first... I ran her as a Chaos deck where I tried to make everyone lose at the same time. It was great practice for learning all the intracate rules of the game. One time, my upkeep lasted an entire hour while we resolved everything on the stack.
Someone played this deck against me, suspended "exile all permanents", I burst them down, and then the rest of the table ganged up on me for killing a player in 1 turn 😂

The way you talk about her is the way I feel about Sarkhan Unbroken in a dragon deck, which is why I slipped him into my five color Ur-dragon Commander deck. It’s nice conceptually to think that you can bring every dragon out of your deck and onto the battlefield for free, it just ain’t happening. The moment they see Sarkhan Unbroken hit the playing field, it’s open season on him.
I'd much rather have an Izzet deck where the opponent has to gamble instead of all of the "innovative" spellslinger Izzet decks. That said, you can check exiled cards, please don't shit your pants because I suspended a Chemister's Insight after missing a land drop. You can even tell in what order I'm going to get the cards back by a matter of simple causality. Now, if you dip the Doctor Who stuff for suspend shenanigans, then you're almost certainly up to something. Suddenly four time counters is five and three is two and the order you thought you could address one or two at a time is now going to drop Niv Curiosity on the same turn.
Im not seeing how this deck wins any faster or easier than your usual "bullshit out an eldrazi" deck. You get your instawin card on turn 6 or 7 or whatever, yeah? Depending on mana rocks and things like clockspinning. So what? Everyone else is also trying to tie up the game by then. Turn 6-7 is craterhoof hours.
I'll admit it. I used to play her with a lot of eldrazi and... shit, here I go... I played MLD. All of it. Ruination, Boom/Bust, Decree of anihilation, Obliterate...

I play with a manager and he has about $1000 into the deck. I kid you not he removes time spirals in an instant and somehow always plays a big eldrazi or void winnower that locks out the game completely for some commanders let alone cards in your hands. So when he plays this commander I always play Etali Primal Conquer. And I tell you what he has a hard time countering my etali. Sometimes I will be petty and just not play his cards just so they stay in exile. 😂😂😂
If a spell or effect does not specifiy whether it exiles face-up or face-down it always exiles face-up. But don't worry Spice8Rack and the guys from Cardmarket made the same mistake a while ago.
Small thing, but I hate this meta that has developed of "whoever sounds most whiny about how long they've been asking gets their suggestion into the video." I'm sure it takes time to write and record these, y'all.
Most of the time people don't have the removal or counters for my "Not-as-horrible" 5 to 7 drops. Mostly because there's always worse thing more hastily coming from the green players. And those may be just bait for the counters. Or because I use my shenanigans to speed up the process when they don't have the mana or hand to respond.
