I was so thrilled finding the track on the internet after having Sobule's silky vocal hallucinated in my head for years. Her nostalgic quality is so unique that each time I hear her singing is like walking down the memory lane with cherished delight.
Similar experience here. I used to listen to this song on my alarm clock radio in 7th grade. A zillion years later, i get to hear it on my own terms. 😁
I can't believe this was 1994. When Nicky Campbell was on late night BBC Radio1 and played some fabulous tunes like this. This lady should be a lot better known for her sensational voice. Music to make you feel good to be alive.
lucky enough to work with Jill a lifetime ago on the album i think, 'things here are different' just an amazing artist nearly fell through the floor when i saw her crop up on The West Wing ....i was only ten years behind the series. you should buy the album it was a gem.
This is the only song of Jill Sobule that I liked. It's her natural singing voice while her other songs sound strained. I remember this song appeared on the radio stations back in the late summer or early autumn of 1992. Yet the information here shows the song appeared on her 1990 album. I agree with everyone else. Too Cool was very underrated and should have been a much bigger hit in its time.
Great memories my first job Drug Emporium use to play this piped into the background music. Didnt find out the name of the artist until bout 2005 or so. Great melodic tune really dig the Miles Davis style muted trumpet!!!
I only know of this song because it received at least some limited airplay on our local smooth jazz station (now no more). Wonderful song and has perfect mood and rhythm for Rumba dancing.
jeff4justice Oops my bad, never mind. I thought you were confusing Jill Sobule's "I Kissed a Girl" with Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl." Will engage brain next time.
+Jim W Nothing Nothing made me laugh harder than The Rock introducing Katy Perry and saying "Hey, I kissed a girl... AND I LIKED IT!!" Heard Katy got mad about that but it was hilarious.
Clever lyrics and great melody and voice, she should have had greater success but she was probably too genuine for the music business! WE are the lucky ones that heard the brilliance in her music, so thank you Jill!
lyrics : I caught you watching me You thought I didn't see By the way that you stared I know there's something there Your smile sometimes shows What you don't want me to know There's a warmth inside your hide (I can feel) That would start a flame Your little secret stays with me (don't you know) I'll never give it away Oh you're too cool to fall in love You're too cool to fall in love Only fools have open hearts You're too cool So distant, so free Pretending mystery Calculating every move Tell me what you got to prove It doesn't matter what we do (no one cares) So why you are still playing safe And don't you know I would give my heart and soul I'm not the one who's afraid You don't have to act this way What ya got to lose I would love to hear you say I do love you You don't have to act this way What ya got to lose I would love to hear you say I do love you You're too cool
Joe Jackson had her back up one of his tours when she came out with Things Here Are Different. She was a fun opening act. I went out and bought the cd that week. Great artist.
this song sounds like its about someone that is stuck on someone that wont have them , and the singer is stuck on them and don't realize there heart belongs to someone else
+Terry Green Just figured it was like the lyrics, just someone either too cool or too shy (but macho acting to hide the shyness). You see it all the time, especially on TV. Two people are crazy about each other, but neither one coming forward and telling how they feel. Happens, sometimes for a tragically too long at times.
Best song she ever did, I heard this for the first time when I was about 16. Although the song is very sad and it hurts a quite bit - because it sings of a lonely heart, longing to be loved It's a sweet, sad melody that speaks to all of our lonely hearts that long to be loved by that special someone, that we truly love. . . who just won't. Fall in love with us (tears)
YES. Upon seeing this video again, I still think the same, what is the psycho happiness look on her puss? Why would she seem HAPPY (and nuts too...) that the person she's in love with is too cool for her, or too cool to love anyone??
Jeesh, this is the first time I've seen this terrible video. I LOVED the song when it was on the radio; didn't know it had such an insane video. She looks on this video like she's both insane and on drugs (weird-ass grin on her face). This video itself must have been why she's a one-hit-wonder (and never went further); the song itself was great.
What might be cool would be to hear this song without the evil 80s digital reverb and the Wall Street wine bar arrangement. Even great songwriters can be easily sabotaged by the time they exist in.
