Uncle Dave really confirmed here that only smarks and hardcore fans are the ones left, and he's focused on that rather than making this wrestling thing big again. So sad.
How exactly can you make wrestling big again when #1. The business is exposed. #2. People mostly stream, podcast, or video game these days and don't care for TV. #3. MMA and Boxing are much more entertaining, and #4. NWA Powerrr is the professional wrestling people "seek" yet it gets no mention on Cornette's channel.
Wrestling isn't gonna be big like it was ever again. Now that there's social media and folks lives are exposed as well as just knowing its not legit led to a lot of folks who grew up not being able to suspend belief as easily.
Dave actually genuinely thinks. Or at least thought... as this was a while ago that he tweeted it... That AEW is gunna be the thing that takes over wrestling and makes it big again.
“Well, the problem is, you know, like, NXT has a cookie cutter... you know, style of wrestling. And, while - there’s plenty of talent over there, but, but, you know, it’s like, difficult to determine, you know, who would stand out except maybe Balor, but, but, but, he’s struggling too, because he does the same thing - AEW is better.” -Dave Meltzer trying to talk.
I don't even know the complaints about everyone in NXT having the same style, Dunne, KOR, Balor, Kross, Gargano all have distinct styles. While I will agree every Gargano match is same, but NXT has powerhouses, high flyers, brawlers, Grapplers all doing their shit. While in AEW, even someone like Archer and Cage have to have the flippy shit match
"Well bro, the problem is NXT has a cookie cutter style of wrestling bro. And while there's plenty of talent over there bro, it's difficult to determine bro who would stand out except maybe Balor bro. But bro, he's struggling too, because he does the same thing bro. AEW is better.............. bro." - Vince Russo trying to talk
I watched the recent Ospreay vs Ibushi from new japan and man they couldn’t even lock up or do any believable chain wrestling exchanges... they did some spectacular spots, but it NEVER felt like a fight. And I like both wrestlers. One of my favorite Ishii matches is vs Ibushi. Now that was a fight!
Haven't been watching wrestling for that long, but honestly, glad I found cornettes channel last year. It's made me respect pro wrestling alot more than I did when I started with just what WWE was featuring in late 2012 to present day.
Bullshit...Because anyone with a brain and an IQ above 50 doesn't believe that All Friends Wrestling is real, not when they don't have heels and faces, their booking is like a ferret on meth and they constantly have to rush out and tell everyone that their performance artists are fine after matches where someone gets kayfabe injured....These are the same people who had to say that Matt was hit with the wrong chair and how it was supposed to be gimmicked.....AEW doesn't do shit to pretend that its real.
My favorite thing Jim Ross ever said was in response to people saying that if only wrestling just copied the attitude era style it would regain popularity and he goes "What are you, 8?" Lmao
@@newfacepaula Speaking as someone who grew up through the AE, I DON'T want the AE copied. Having said that, no-one can offer or do anything new. Wrestling is dead.
@@YippeeMK kids have been watching fucking wrestling since forever. My dad watched Bruno and Larry as a kid. Cornette got into it as a kid. I watched it in the 80s at 3yrs old. Kids will always be rhe targeted demographic. Because who comes with them? Parents. If you can win anyone else over, you win.
The AE was a product of its time i dont see it working to day. Hell Russo tried to recapture it in TNA and it just fell flat mostly. Another thing about the AE is it had Stone Cold and Rock to carry it.
Cool to hear sincere anecdotes from Jim about his passion for preserving pro wrestling. Kinda bring all of his rants into perspective, and it’s dare-I-say somewhat endearing. 😆
Dave Meltzer is the guy people shouldn't give attention to,but his takes are so awful that people have to talk about the guy.Dave Meltzer is a meme at this point
As someone who isnt a fan of Dave nor a big time hater of his I find it hilarious people cant stop talking about him. Meltzer lives rent free in everyones head.
Please get Jim to watch Dragunov v Gradwell No DQ match. It is another example of how NxT UK has quietly been doing excellent job of building up a great promotion.
What ? You think people want to watch that shit ? Let me tell you somethin, nxt and aew are same They cant attract peiple because the do the same shit everytime Flip flop, superkick, non believable wrestler, bad promo You need a legit guy who believable as a wrestler Eli Drake and Kross have it, other than that are trash Maybe toni storm, she should go to main roster too
@@frankunodostres473 then who ? Gargano ? He is cruiserweight Ciampa ? Cringe and not fit Shirai ? She cant cut a promo Cole ? You believe that he is a tough guy ? People cant watch wrestling because these wrestler soft
@@tonymatrisin4328 i will not put that one on that list. I believe Cornette does not like the style of Cole, very similar to the young bucks... super kicks, super kicks, and more super kicks. Though, I know I would enjoy that match
@@lsj6721 Superkicks have become one of the, if not the most overused and overrated move in all of wrestling. It went from an amazing end-of-the-match finisher, to a weak transitional move that seemingly every one and their mother does, and never ever puts anyone down for the 3 count. Heck, forget even getting a pin out of it, most people get up instantly after receiving the move. When I see a wrestler do it, I usually lose a bit of respect for them because at this point if you're doing it, you're either lazy, completely lacking individuality or just flat-out oblivious or ignorant to how overused it is, or worse yet, but unfortunately, more common...all of the above! Using it sarcastically or ironically like the Bucks do, IMO falls in the category of being ignorant about it.
Anyone that gets over in NXT generally goes up to the main roster (except Undisputed Era). If AEW had a B show where everyone that got over was sent to the A show, and they put that show against NXT, their B show would lose to WWE’s C show. Put Dynamite opposite Smackdown and see how that ratings war of “interesting styles” works out.
Shotty lee Johnson took a powerbomb from inside the ring to the outside and I'm thinking dude is like 22 or so and hes willing to end his career just to try and get OVER Just crazy
PCO did that in ROH, and he's over 50. I guess he's not a good example though cause he's a physical freak, not many people could take all the nasty looking fucking bumps like him and NOT get injured.
I never seen a wrestling show before that makes me think "that's it, he's crippled" on a regular basis like dynamite, it's more like watching jackass than wrestling
He's got a brain like a burnt out village..he can't even book a full sentence and I'm expected to take his ramblings as an expert on the business yet he's never worked in the business..He's never had a match or booked a territory or even set up a ring he can't even string a sentence together and he thinks he's some sort of expert..He's nuttier than squirrel shit
Salutations to all the aew stans that come here to torture themselves and defend whatever criticism is said about all petite. Ps Jim's been over since the late 80s and he's been relevant on YT since he shoot became available on the web.
A very good explanation by Jim. Everyone knows wrestling's a work but it turns people off when it looks and feels obviously phoney because they can't suspend their disbelief and take it seriously. I always said that professional wrestling was at its best when the matches looked real and the characters and story-lines were believable.
As a kid I always figured when a guy was thrown into the ropes, he kept going because he was using it as an attack. Like he bounces off the ropes and spears (what Americans call a spear is not a spear tackle) or Lou thezz press. What always annoyed me is a guy throws a guy to the ropes, then lays down so the guy who’s running jumps over him. Then the guy on the ground gets up and jumps over the guy running for some reason. NO!!! If I get thrown to the ropes and the guy lies down, I’m kicking those ribs and stomping the head if it’s legit. If he tries jumping over me, I’m taking those legs from under him so he collapses to the ground head first. That was always fake and it is why I hate the golden era of wrestling and prefer the attitude era, the rock and Austin and co in 98,99,00 did not that phoney crap.
Thank you I grew up on the ruthless aggression era but rewatched the attitude and I agree so much wrestling from 98-02 is better than any golden era wrestling but I respect both
Disagree completely because the attitude era didn't even try to look like a sport anymore. Weapons and gimmicks everywhere, more punching than wrestling (especially in the main event scene), it was way phonier. Go back and see some classic Ric Flair, Harley Race, Hiroshi Hase, Dynamite Kid. I get what you're saying about some of the over the top spots but that generation is really as authentic as wrestling gets.
Absolutely agree with this. I'd rather watch a basic match where guys go through the motions and try to make it look legitimate to a degree instead of these superhero matches where they're dropping each other on their heads, and floating and flying all over the ring slapping their thighs and making it barely looks like they're even touching each other because they're making it look like a fucking dance routine
The crowd of performers (I refuse to call them wrestlers because it's insulting to the men and women worthy of that designation) gathered on the floor to catch the diving performer is my biggest pet peeve about modern wrestling/sports entertainment. It's so obvious that these guys/gals are working together, regardless of what side they're purportedly on in the match, and they make almost no effort to disguise it anymore.
Same style of matches in NXT? OK Uncle Dave lets see the Takeover card : 1. Walter vs. Ciampa (British style hard hitting match) 2. Adam Cole vs. Kyle O' Reilly (Gimmick match) 3. Johnny Gargano vs. ? (Modern style kickouts match) 4. Cruiserweight Ladder Match (Lucha libre vs. British style) 5. Dunne vs. Kushida (Technical Match) 6. Finn Balor vs. Kross (Closest to American style match)
The key is that all of these guys made their names on the independent scene. Sure, the PC has helped them become more refined, but overall they wrestle differently. In AEW, a lot of the guys made their name on the indies, but there's no structure to most of the matches. It's always a big multiman spot fest, unless Hangman, Cody, MJF, & FTR are involved.
I get Brian likes AEW but even he has to admit. That Santos Escobar is better than the Lucha Bros. Santos is believable he is serious when he is wrestling. He is good at being a heel you can tell who is a good guy and a bad guy in his matches. He isn't phoney like Pentagon who is dancing during his street fights and does the same match. He does the same matches he does in Triple A and CMLL. I agree that some of the NXT has a lot of flaws. I also agree with Brian in saying NXT is stale. But you do have guys in NXT doing the AEW style guys like Adam Cole, Johnny Gargano and MSK just to name a few. They both have the flips, flops and the dives with no selling.
They're just delusional, i used to be aew fans before pandemic, after that storytelling, booking, hell vs face, logic in pro wrestling are mess, only nxt can save pro wrestling now
Wonder how Jim felt about the Bucks and Lucha Bros’ “five star classic” that was so clearly cooperation between both of them. Especially when they did the stereo cutters. That just looked so bad
If AEW wanted to stand out they would announce weight classes and style of match so the fans know what they're watching. I liked when wcw would have exclusive lucha libre style matches with the right announcers sharing the right knowledge.
To think that Conman Thompson, during 83 Weeks, told Eric Bischoff to tone down to heat on Dave Meltzer because it offends him (Conrad). I'm glad Cornette doesn't hold back.
Lucha Bros are great. The problem is the people they work with. Their matches in Impact are 10x better than what they are in AEW. The problem they are having in AEW is they can't adapt to the outlaw mud show style. Watch Pentagon Jr vs Rey Fenix vs Austin Aries and you'll see the difference.
Isn’t AEW style basically ROH or NJPW? Or Gymnastics wrestling? AEW has the same form of wrestling like no selling, kicks, and flips. Ratings aren’t everything but Dave Meltzer thinks ratings make you the best wrestling show ever 🤡
No , no NJPW is different only the cruiserweights wrestle a high flying fast paced style to some degree. Then heavyweights have certain style the common thread is the use of fighting spirit
@Tiger after the segment with Miz/Morrison and bad bunny's car, he said he expected bad bunny and priest to steal the wheels of the car the Miz owns " because you know, they are Puerto Ricans" Implication being that they all are thieves.
I was just listening to the Lapsed Fan podcast series with Dave Meltzer on Starrcade. I think it’s 1998 where he talks about Goldberg’s streak and how they made it not real and that really cost them. It’s an amazing listen, because he actually DID know his shit, and it’s kind of weird after the modern bombardment of his shit to hear him talking about how to present wrestling to an audience. He sounded very similar to Jim Cornette, and it’s fascinatingly ironic to compare that to Dave now.
Cant wait for the next episode, when Brian tells Jim that Dave spent 20minutes on WOR on politely criticizing AEWs booking (in terms of why ratings are falling) and basicly just repeating what Jim is saying all along.
Most recent lucha libre contest I recall was between Lucha House Party and Legado Del Phantasma because it was represented as the two sides of lucha libre trying to prove which was the better method.
Is there even really a difference these days? Aside from the blood and some moves AEW allows that WWE doesn't, it's all the same thing. Everyone does Japanese-inspired moves. Everyone does Lucha-style flips and dives. It isn't the 90s when the cruiserweight thing was innovative.
Sasha Banks can be bad at making it obvious what is happening next. In last weeks tag match against Jax and Shayna..she ducked a clothesline from Shayna before she’d even threw her arm up, then Sasha turned and looked at Shayna’s leg whilst holding her arms out ready to catch a kick...Shayna hadn’t even turned to face Sasha yet 😑🤦🏼♂️
Maybe, but that's still better than the complete botches of people like Kris Statlander! The AEWBotches twitter feed has some amazing videos that make Sasha look like prime Bret Hart...
I have to completely disagree with the idea that NXT is a cookie cutter product, especially with the Stand And Deliver card. People are entitled not to like it if they want, but NXT is hands down the best wrestling product in America as far as i'm concerned.
I don’t mind seeing a mix of styles but, AEW does it in such a way that it can come across as a chaotic mess. They literally bring people in and just have them use their in Indy character and style even if it makes no sense. There’s a reason major promotions would create a character/style for a wrestler and not just have them do the same thing that pops a small venue.
I dont listen to Uncle Dave much, so I dont know if this is something he regularly brings up, but what a weird thing to say about the ratings between the 2 shows. "The reason nxt didnt beat aew this week....." was that an admission that AEW was shit, and if nxt was just a tad better then they would've won? I dont know, but what a weird thing to say.
even as an avid AWE / NXT / NJPW etc etc fan I can completely see why Jim feels this way and I can agree with him fully here... it’s just that we are so far past that like decades past that point so it’s all like that and I’m still a fan of wrestling but like let’s say this was the 90’s and he’s saying this he’d be spot on
When I was younger for every job or school project I would hear the same thing. Jim's "I want a difficulty of 5 and an execution of 10" ... Used to make me so mad. Now as an old working stiff I couldn't agree more.
90% of the wrestlers in AEW couldn’t have a match like Kyle O’ Reilly vs Finn Balor or WALTER matches. Say what you want about the booking, but wrestling wise, the men’s main event scene in NXT is quality with elements of 90’s All Japan or Katsuyori Shibata style wrestling thrown in.
