i really don't understand why i hate them either. its just this switch that gets turned on. can't really help myself. same thing when im around hot pockets.
I was in the birth of the Nickelback hating: In a nutshell, It started in 9gag a few years ago: NB made a misoginist song or something, and people reacted badly and turned then into memes, now, people dont even know why they hate the band. Most of people move like heard, so they do "what's cool at the moment" and hate or love things, just to be part of something. I love Nickelback, they have been on a great part of my adolescence and I love most of them songs
it's a shame the entire crowd missed his subtle joke at the end - "i think people define themselves by criticising other things...and i think that's wrong"
There was an audible majority of the crowd clapping, what exactly is it that you think “the entire crowd” missed. To me they seemed to get it just fine
@Chris The joke was that he was criticizing people for criticizing people. He nestled it into a heartfelt statement which overshadowed the joke. That's some good Jim :)
His new show on TVLand has an episode about that where he tries to do other jokes and people just hate it and don't laugh and then only laugh when he compares his joke to food.
Honestly, I've been to two different Nickelback concerts a couple years apart. Now, there were other good bands worth going to see such as Three Days Grace, Chevelle, Hinder, Hoobastank and few others, but Nickelback puts on a damn good show. They actually sound pretty good live .
I like Nickelback, always have. But every mention of Nickelback from others has been negative in my experience- hatred- but nobody can ever give a reason why they hate them.
Chad from Nickelback lives 15 minutes down the road from me in Canada on a large piece of property. Often many locals are invited to his parties. I guess us Canadians slack a wee bit on the Nickelback hate, eh?! lol
I never got what the Nickleback hate was even about. I've always liked their music but, most people will say they suck because it seems like the cool thing to say. If you don't like something then don't talk about it. I don't like Country music but, I don't complain about how most of it is just break up songs and stories about the south.
He’s very relatable. Never understood Jim’s appeal until recently but he speaks a lot of truths that apply to my life and makes some great points. He’s awesome!

It started more with Nickelback being terrible and nevertheless becoming hugely commercially successful, and doing things like using the same song structures and chord progressions (and tempos, and lyrical themes) on hit after hit. I actually agree with Jim, that it's a waste of time to complain about one band in particular (especially since this bit is 15 years too late), but it's easy to see how Nickelback is symptomatic of what's wrong with everything to do with the music industry. Like the band, the whole industry thrives on mediocrity and repetition and is terrified of actual creative risk. Annnnd, they're a bad hangover of post-grunge top 40 pretending-to-be-sad/angry-for-profit-white-guy music from the late '90s.
I'm pretty sure it was the minute when someone realized if you take the song "How You Remind Me" and the song "Hero" and put them on top of each other, adjust the tempo so the BPM matches, it's the exact same song. When you rewrite your hits over and over, you deserve to be made fun of.

I dare anybody to listen to 'rockstar' or 'you remind me' and still say you hate Nickelback! I don't like anything else they've done but thats a different story!
Not a huge fan of Nickelback but I ALWAYS give credit where its due when I notice something I can compliment. Here's what a I can say about Nickelback, personal opinions of course 1) Lullaby and a handful of their songs are great songs 2) They sound the same live as on the cd because they are solid performers, and no its not playback or autotune 3) They are incredibly down to Earth and pretty normal guys, even if they are a group of dudebros 4) They do create songs in a formulaic way, but the melodies and hooks are terrific most of the time and thats not always an easy thing to do
Ugh I so agree with him people passionately hate people and things all the time for seemingly no reason and sometimes they don't even know why either. The general population will so easily turn on celebrities all because of hype.
Who is outraged about Nickelback? They're just generic and unoriginal, which people hate them for. Of course they sell out arenas, people love McDonald's, don't they?
Ive noticed on the internet and especially the movie reviews people automatically hate certain movies and they haven't actually seen it. I think allot of people think its cool to be negative anymore.
Eh, the Nickelback thing is basically an inside joke that everyone is in on. Literally no one sees them as 'murderers'. I get it's exaggerated for comedy's sake but, c'mon.
This isn’t a joke, my mom bought two nickelback tickets, she left them in the car for a couple days, one night she forgets to lock her doors, a thief takes all of the cash but they left the tickets. The world writes its own jokes sometimes lmao, and it’s great.
There is constructive criticism, done out of love for the betterment of the other..and then there is wasteful and hateful criticism which is solely designed to hurt the other. Those that engage in the latter..clearly hate themselves and would rather project that on others than deal with their own insecurities.

Some people say they are generic and unoriginal but so are dozens and dozens of other artists out there who don't get even a fraction of the vitriol that Nickelback gets. For me, I either like songs, am indifferent to them or kinda dislike them...I don't really HATE lot of songs out there and even when I do, I don't hate the artists themselves. I think Jim is right about this being a bandwagon kind of thing
That's cool man, you made your own opinion on something, and I think that it's a thing that alot of people nowadays are just too lazy to do. It seems like now, alot of people will jump on bandwagons to appear "cool".
I like Nickelback for one reason--they are a bar band. In a day and time where music is created by some guy hiring 4 or 5 individuals-- Nickelback (only have changes one member) started out as guys in HIgh School in Hanna Alberta, moved to Vancouver and paid their dues on the road playing every crap bar in Canada
We hate Nickleback because TV and radio shoved them down our throats. Each of us thought we were the only ones that hated them, and now we celebrate because we were all thinking the same thing.
Jeferson Oliveira Yes, but unpopularity, especially extreme unpopularity, is the only way to respond to mistaken media outlets. I liked 99% of what they shoved down my throat. I didn't like Nickleback. It was awesome when I learned everyone else hated them as much as I did.
***** No, most people hated them the moment they heard them. Learning that we all hate the same thing is what made the hatred so celebrated. It's backlash against the fact that they still end up on the radio and in the news.
I hated Nickelback when I was like 14 and heard it over the radio all the time. I think Nickelback has its reputation because so many people came to the conclusion they suck while being force fed it, over the old-world gatekeeper of music "radio".
Okay, I agree, but you have to look at the history. Yes, most people that hate on Nickleback just do it because they're following what everyone else is doing. Originally though, people hated Nickleback because to many people, what made music in the 90's so great was that it was 'real'. For many, watching 'real' be copied, licensed, and packaged into a product line was very heartbreaking. Nickleback was seen as the most glaring obvious example of 'false real' that came out of it. People found it insulting. Another example of this is Michael Bay movies. People don't hate Michael Bay because his movies suck, they hate him because they loved Transformers. Same for George Lucas and the Star Wars prequels. Nobody cares that Jar Jar Binks is terrible, the problem is that Jar Jar Binks was put into a Star Wars movie. You see, when you love something and accept it into your heart, seeing it trashed feels like you yourself are being trashed. That's why, in some cases, what should just be a simple "I don't like this, I guess I'll move on" becomes seething hatred. Unfortunately, there are a lot of followers out who subconsciously know that if they say something that a lot of people agree with, they will get the same feeling that popularity produces, so they jump on the hate-bandwagon and perpetuate a culture of hating a particular person or group of persons. Gaffigan is right, it is ridiculous. For people who actually lost something they love to the state of an industry though, it's a little more understandable.
